If you look at where the were sitting and the path of travel the ball was on from home plate to them it was going across his body towards her or in between them had his arms not been out in front of him like you can see at 0:37. The ball wasn't going directly perpendicular at him it was on an angle going across his body, so yes had his arms not been in front of him like they were it would have gone in between them or hit her.

If a baseball hit someone with that amount of energy in the chest, it would cause at maximum a fracture or broken rib. So it is clearly exaggeration when they state that it ''saved'' his life.
