Thank you everyone for the likes and comments! I'm happy you like my recommendations!! It's been a while and I have since found more books I think you might like: The Amarna Age series by Kylie Quillinan The Amarna Princesses series by Kylie Quillinan Child of the Erinyes series by Rebecca Lochlann (I personally only cared for the first 3 books) River God by Wilbur Smith The She- King series by Libbie Hawker White Lotus series by Libbie Hawker The Mask of Ra by Paul Doherty KHNM series by Sandy Esene (book 1 is called Daughter of Maat) ENJOY!
I am really getting into historical fiction. it seems we can learn so much from the past and realise that we keep going round, nothing really changes. Fascinating.
It’s quite the hefty book, but I LOVED Margaret George’s Memoirs of Cleopatra. Very detailed, very engaging and starts out with Cleopatra as a child and goes all throughout her life :)
It's probably been mentioned before, but Margaret Geore wrote The Autobiography of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles and also Elizabeth I. There is also one about Helen of Troy and one about Mary Magdelan... I've seen Ms George be part of a Writer's Conference here in Madison, WI; we both have continued living here for decades.
I like that you went in depth before giving the historical fiction recommendations!!! Loved this! I am inspired to pick up some more historical fiction now :D
I just discovered your channel, and I loved this video! Subscribed, of course, and now I’m going to go through and watch others from the past. I don’t know how ‘official’ these are in terms of historical fiction, but they for the bill for me, and I really loved them. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (on my Top 5 all-time favorite books list), The Red Tent, and several of James Michener’s novels - starting with The Source.
Alexandre Dumas wrote great historical novels. The D’Artagnan Romances and Queen Margot are especially good. Romala by George Eliot is interesting, set in Renaissance Florence. Dorothy Dunnett is great in the Lymond Chronicles, set in Elizabethan times. The House of Nicollo series is again in Medici Florence. The Hangman’s Daughter is an interesting mystery series set in Germany after the Thirty Years War. A good recent one is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, set in WW2 Germany and France. And if you are up for some rewarding work, give Mason & Dixon a try, a novel about the surveyors who established the MasonDixon line, by Thomas Pynchon. Or Gravity’s Rainbow, another WW2 novel which I count as historical since Pynchon was only 8 when the war ended.
I’m obsessed with Ancient Rome, such a freak show, so brutal. I found an author called Lindsey Davis. I got The Jupiter Myth. It’s a murder mystery set in Roman occupied Britain. I also watched a lot of movies set in Ancient Rome, they’re amazing, can’t remember what they’re called anymore. I also loved Conn Igguldens Wolf of The Plains trilogy which is about Ghengis Khan. ❤😊
A couple of recommendations .."This Thing of Darkness" by Harry Thompson set around the 1830-50 based on the Voyage of The Beagle and its aftermath with the ship's captain Robert Fitzroy and Charles Darwin as the main protagonists. Also "Strumpet City: by James Plunkett is set in Pre First World War Dublin. Story based on the industrial dispute known as the Dublin Lockout and how the various people in different classes were effected.
You are a fantastic speaker! Thank you for such insightful book descriptions and also the list you included below the video.. I love historical fiction, and you are giving a very interesting list here so I will read some of your recommended books.
Thank you for the great recommendations. You may enjoy Sharon Kay Penman’s book on Richard III, “The Sunne in Splendour”, or her 5 book Plantagenet series starting with “When Christ and His Saints Slept”. I got into this time period because of “Pillars of the Earth”.
I like that you went in depth before giving the historical fiction recommendations!!! Loved this! I am inspired to pick up some more historical fiction now :D
I love the book Snowflower and the Secret Fan by: Lisa See, based in 19th century China. Such a good book!!! Also, the book called The Red Tent by: Anita Diamant. It’s a story following Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, and telling the story of Jacob’s wives. It’s one of my favorites and a really interesting take on biblical characters who are only mentioned in the biblical narrative.
I know I’m a bit late 😅 But thank you soooooo much for making these recommendations based on historical era! I’ve been struggling to find RU-vid videos of historical book recommendations that aren’t ww2 books. My favorite eras to read is ancient and medieval, so I’ll definitely be looking into the ones you mentioned (I love The Song of Achilles 🥲) I recently read this book called Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn and I devoured it. It takes place in Ancient Rome and the main plot focuses on a romance between a Jewish slave girl and a gladiator from Britannia. I recommend it! I’m waiting for the third book in the mail haha Anyway, thanks again 😊
I couldn't resist suggesting you this historical fiction novel as I was watching your video: (The Thief, the Harlot, and the Healer) My favorite genre is historical fiction.
Wow, this list from the Middle Ages on reflects my taste exactly and most of these books are already in my library. Obvviously, you have superb taste!😊
I absolutely love historical fiction. It’s my favourite genre, in particular the pagan societies of old. I also have a special love for the medieval era.
I really enjoyed this video. Don't miss SJ Parris' Giordano Bruno series, starting with Heresy (Elizabethan England). Then there's Ariana Franklin's series that starts with Mistress of the Art of Death. This one is like Kay Scarpetta meets Henry ll.
Loved your video! I recommend The garden of evening mists by Tan Twan Eng, a Malaysian author. The story is set in Malaysia during WW2 with the Japanese occupation.
Have you read any of Ken Follet’s historical fiction books ?? If so which ones and what do you think about them ?? I loved The Kingsbridge series and I’m currently reading The Century trilogy.
Loved the bit where you did your hair , kinda reminds me of the kinda thing my wife would do. Looks like you had a cut and a colouring. I think it came out just great. I've only recently got into this genre. I picked up the Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall trilogy for 1.50 UK at my local charity shop , looking forqrd tostarting them next year.
The Wolf Hall trilogy is a very good start. They're sometimes a little dense with all the different characters to keep track of, if you don't have a lot of knowledge about Tudor England (wikipedia helps), but it's masterfully written and Hillary Mantel has done her homework, and stays very truthful to actual history while still being able to tell an engaging story.
Ancient fiction-Clan of The Cave Bear by Jean Auell (speculative) ;Mark Of The Lion trilogy by Francine Rivers (Christian fiction); A Pillar of Iron by Taylor Caldwell
For ancient historical fiction, I recently read Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. It is a retailing of the battle of Thermopylae. But it's nothing like 300. It has themes such as patriotism, love, and bravery. A definite must-read
I’ve read many of your recommendations. I also liked A series set in the wars of the roses but more from the commoners view point is Toby Clements Kingsmaker trilogy. My other favourite is Robert Macammons Matthew Corbett series set in the early American colony around 1700 the first is called Speaks the night bird.
Well, if looking for historical fiction not set in England I always recommend Quo Vadis ( set in Nero's Rome), The Gods Thirst ( set in France during the Revolutionary Terror) , Storm of Steel ( war seen through a German soldier in WW1) , Red Cavalry (set in the Russian Civil War) and One Million Dead (about a family torn by the Spanish Civil War).
Just found your channel and I'm so glad. I'm on a quest for historical fiction set in the Spanish Colonialism period in South America. I love Amy Tan's books that provide a very different historical/cultural perspective.
Thank you for amazing book recommendations. I'm also a big fan of Richard III and anything that has to do with War of the roses. I'll definitely be checking out the books you recommended. I don't know if you're into manga, but if you like war of the roses, you should definitely check out "Requiem of the rose king" by author Aya Kanno. It's translated into english and is such an interesting take on Richard III. I highly recommend it!
The Hussite Trilogy by Andrzej Sapkwoski (author of Witcher) is a historical fantasy series of novels. It consists of three books: The Tower of Fools, Warriors of God and Light Perpetual. It is set in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown (mostly Silesia and Bohemia) during the Hussite Wars (1419-1434). This is a darn good book, where witches fly on broomsticks and other fantastic creatures appear. I don't know how it reads in English, but in the original it is written in great language. It really draws you in. It is funny, intriguing and clever. And it has romance in it.
Thank you for the video. Here are some of my favourites: Ancient Rome: Pride of Carthage by A. Durham Medieval Italy: Duchess of Milan by M. Ennis Crusades: The Saladin series (Eagle, Kingdom, Holy War) by J. Hight Imperial China: The Moon in the Palace by W.D. Randel
I clicked on the link for the book club and it said nit found. I guess things changed since this video. I'm a lover of historical love stories in England, Ireland and Scotland, back in the 17 and 1800s. I can stay up all night reading.
Just found your channel and would also recommend C.J Sansom collection. It is also for the Tudor time period and also Kate Mosse Lbarynth and Sepulchre
Have you read The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek or The Liar’s Bench both by Kim Michele Richardsonson? Not my typical time period I gravitate to but stumbled across Book Woman and gave it a shot. Was pleasantly surprised not to mention opening my eyes to a different kind of discrimination to “blues” as well as the importance of a book woman.
@@thebookbelle do read 1) immortals of meluha 2) secret of nagas 3) oath of vayuputras i dont remember the name of this series but this is the correct order, its based on indian mythology. just mind boggling to read, u wont regret. and ending is too epic
You have to read books by Henryk Sienkiewicz. "Quo vadis?" is placed in ancient Rome, times of Neron. A beautiful historical romance about the early Christian era. The book has been screened many times. It is an absolute world canon! Set in the realities of the 15th century, the excellent "The Knights of the Cross" or "The Teutonic Knights". The 17th century epic marvel of "The Trilogy", which is a passionate series consisting of three parts: "With Fire and Sword," "The Deluge," and "Sir Michael ". Beautiful, adventurous, romantic - these are some of the best historical novels. A lover of historical novels simply must know them - he will not regret it.
My favourite non-white hist fic is "Empress Orchid" by Anchee Min. Guy Gavriel Kay's "Under Heaven" is also good but, obviously, written by a white person. One that's on my shelf but I haven't read it yet is "Iron Widow" by Xiran Jay Zhao is historical fantasy, I believe.
You Ad link (history quill book club) doesn't work. Upon registering, I was supposed to either create of get a password. What could go wrong, right? Well, since I got none, I went along the "lost my password" lane, and once I entered my email, they say I don't exist, even though they welcomed me vua email 2 seconds earlier. Thought you might wanna know.
I am confused about the link for the historical quill bookclub. The link does not bring me to the bookclub instead it brings me to the niche reader website. Can you send the link that leads directly to the signing up page. Thanks
Thanks for the reply. The link brings me to the niche reader but it is a mailing list for authors and not readers. There is no sign up page for readers. I am looking for historical fiction books of a type of genre. Hope you can help with the sign up page. Thanks
Mainly because I think a lot of the negative historical commentary on him is due to Tudor propaganda (ie. Shakespeare's Richard III!) but also I find his background and his marriage to Anne Neville so interesting! Thanks for watching :)
