In this video, I will show you some of the basics of the Mamiya C330. We will explore the good, the bad and the ugly of this classic 120 modular medium format system. This video contains numerous picture examples of shots taken from the C330 system.
ADDITIONAL NOTES NOT IN THE VIDEO:
I forgot to tell you. If you want to use modern flash or a flash trigger, make sure you set the toggle on the lens from M to X. X is for modern flash. M is for those old school bulbs you used to see the press use back in the day. Nobody uses those flashes anymore.
Also, the main differences between the C330, C330f and the C330S, is that the S has a much brighter focusing screen than the older two models. Both the S and F also have a lock on the focus dial to lock in focus. The original C330 does not have this feature.

I love the way that miniature format is called full format. I have carried my RB67 Pro-s around in the street, many decades ago (over 40 years ago) and never felt comfortable in a vulnerability way. Extended medium format 54x68mm was frighteningly crisp. Remember that the Sekor lens factory also used to make lenses for Nikon and the like.

one advantage of this camera type is that it has a FIXED mirror, so no slapping on shutter release, so no vibration, and no motion blur, or you can hand hold for longer speeds because of this.

I don't shoot film. BUT I did! The Mamiya TLR's were my step up from my Yashica Mat 124g in the day. When I was using the C330f it was still selling new. Yeap, I'm old. We did weddings with this camera and just one lens, the 80mm. At the time the 135mm was the lens I would use for portraits. And back then it was still cheaper to have two bodies rather than the cost of a interchangeable back camera of any brand. I was surprised you didn't mention the wonderful 250mm lens. The beauty of the square format was you didn't have to worry about flipping the body. What we would do is mark the focusing screen with marks so to tell where to position the subject for portrait or landscape. It made me good money. From that time my camera though was a Kowa Six, the poorman Hasselblad! But it broken easily and was tough to get repaired. Thanks for memory trip, but I am not going back to film!! LOL

I love the C330! The biggest draw for me was the interchangeable lens advantage that no other TLR has. And the lenses are superb! I also use Rolleiflex and Hasselblad V series cameras, and the Sekor lenses on the C330 are every bit as good as the lenses in those cameras. Sekor are high resolution and contrasty lenses. The camera is a bit heavy but not unwieldy in handheld shooting. A tank of a camera!

Although I shoot more often with my RB67, I find that my C330s is more enjoyable to shoot with. Light, balances well, easy to use, and virtually silent. Worth noting: that parallax indicator is also an exposure indicator. As you push the lens further out to focus more closely, you need to up your exposure just like a macro lens. The scale on the side of the ground glass tells you how many stops you need to increase your exposure by. And when you change the lens, it's important to change the lens setting on the dial on the left side of the body, otherwise the parallax/exposure indicator will be off.
@KevinDeal

I agree. I wish I could put my RB lenses on my C330 body. :( Thanks for watching!
@petercoyle9922
@petercoyle9922 Год назад
Thank You I was just going to add a comment regarding what you just said. Back when I was using C330s for Wedding Photography I was surprised at how many other photographers using the same system were unaware that the parallax indicator also was an exposure compensation indicator as well and how important the lens dial on the side needed to be turned to the lens you were using at the time because that changed the motion of the parallax/exposure indicator. I remember many photographers doing close up (which this camera was great at because of the bellows focusing) detail shots and wondering why they were underexposed. When using bellows focusing and focusing on something close you would be increasing the distance between the lens and the film plane and because of the inverse square rule there would be less light hitting the film the further the lens was away from the film plane. Also no one ever mentions that you can’t release the lens holding mechanism unless you turn the unlock, which flips a light blocking door into place, but it still won’t release unless the bellows/lens assembly was completely against the body. Another thing never mentioned is the importance of the pressure plate on the inside of the back door. Maybe because 220 film doesn’t exist anymore but when shooting it needs to be set to the correct film type. 120 film has backing paper that runs the entire length of the roll thereby it is thicker and needs less pressure from the plate to hold it flat and flush with the film plane. 220 film doesn’t have the paper backing, otherwise it would not fit on the roll, so it was thinner and needed a little more pressure from the plate.

Great overview video, thanks! I love these cameras. They are a relatively cheap and painless way to pay homage to the square. I think all the Mamiya TLRs from the C3 or at least the C33 on were pro cameras. Arguably the 220 was their entry-level model, which later came with a lower-cost 80mm lens but I think the TLR became an eccentric rather than mainstream choice for amateurs when SLRs took off in the 1960s. One very cool benefit of the TLR is the low perspective, a nice change from the usual eye-level angle. Sometimes it’s too much-the telltale up-the-nostril shot is not so flattering, but generally a little lower angle makes people look good, I feel.

one other con that is paralax, like a Leica 135 rangefinder, you can't shoot close_up as the lenses are some distance from each other, so some cropping occurs; however this can be fixed by mamiya's 'paramender' attachment, a stem which affixes to the tripod plate, raising the camera the lens centre distance, so you compose, lift, then shoot, NO paralax.

I’ve owned a Hasselblad as well as a C330. Interchangeable film backs are a great idea but bear in mind that they cost a bit. You can just about buy a second C330 for the same price. Having 2 bodies also comes with the benefit of having 2 different lenses mounted so you can be ready for different situations. As far as the quality of image between Hasselblad and the Mamiya C330 I actually think the Mamiya glass beats Carl Zeiss 😮. I know them is fighten’ words but there it is. Well maybe not but I would at least say that I would never be able to tell if a photo was taken with a Hasselblad or a Mamiya. Hasselblads were great before the price of film cameras skyrocketed. With todays prices there is no doubt which camera I would buy - c330 all the way. Great cameras.
@KevinDeal
@KevinDeal Год назад
Since I made this video, I still own my C330's AND i went out and got a Hasselblad. Your statement about the glass is correct. The Mamiya glass is amazing. The main thing where the Hasseblad beats it is the changeable backs and the fact that it is more compact of a system. Outside of that, the C330 is a WAY better value. And your point about having two different lenses is spot on.
@mkshffr4936

Great points about the New York reload. Having a second body is good in case of a mechanical failure too. We used to do something similar in 35mm by having say a Minolta X series and an extra SRT body. Another approach one could take is to have something like a Ricohflex Dia or Rolliecord for a lot of the normal lens work and then a C body with wide angle or short tele mounted ready to go if a situation presents itself.

It does not matter if you change lenses mid roll. The lock button puts a shield over the film when you change the lens. I'm not sure which blue button you're talking about. Are you talking about the blue dot that is on the lens itself? If it's not set correctly the lens will misfire.

I don’t know man. What I understand is that the lever indicates exposure compensation as focusing gets the lens farther from the film
@KevinDeal
@KevinDeal 5 месяцев назад
As the distance increases from the lens to the film, you are correct, exposure compensation should occur. And there is a number that indicates that. We are talking about the line that moves, which is related to cropping. Per the C330 manual (page 14) "When the pointer appears on the focusing screen, the upper portion visible above this portion will be cut off on the film. Be sure that the subject appears in the lower portion of this pointer."

@@KevinDeal just to be clear. there is a needle from the left for exposure compensation AND another line related to crop? mine must be defective, I don't see the later.

Calling this episode 6 makes it sound like there are 5 more episodes on the Mamiya C330. This is episode 1 on the Mamiya C330 unless I'm missing 5 of them.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It is episode 6 of my channel. I've only dedicated one episode to the C330. Thanks for watching.

Anyone watching this will understand fully well what manual focus is. There’s no “tough” about it. It’s called photography.

I agree. It's not a big deal (manual focus). I encourage everyone to shoot in manual focus so they learn that skill. Lots of photographers now just rely on the AF of their digital cameras.

Camera sucks! I used it for a long time because I couldn't afford a Hasselbladand had 80, 55, 65, Super 180 the lever switch to remove Len's jammed a lot not a pro camera advance camera yes.lens are sharp yesI no longer own the Hasselblad either. on professional productions 99% is digital! because of nostalgia I own a Rollei pure precision

It was aimed at the amateur market, so it's definitely not a pro camera. I personally own two of them and haven't experienced the issues you did. I'm sure that must be frustrating. Digital is way easier. I definitely prefer to use my RB67 when I shoot film over the C330, but the C330 is nice when I want to have a lighter set up. Not having removable backs kind of sucks too. I may get a Hasselblad one day. Thanks for the watch!

Nice video!I’m making a choice between 80 2.8 and 105 3.5, the 80 has larger aperture, while I heard that 105ds has heliar structure and may bring amazing effect. I really wanna know your advice🥹

@@KevinDeal what about street photography? Is 105 more recommended too?
@KevinDeal
@KevinDeal Год назад
@@clarencepullman I would say the 80 is what I would recommend for street. Puts you right at 44mm if we are talking about the 35mm standard. Right between 35mm and 50mm, which are arguably the two most common street focal lengths. 105 may be too tight for some story telling scenarios. Perfect for what I do, which is shooting models.
