I pretty much just started researching Cyberpunk, but haven't played it yet. I vaguely knew it was a thing, but didn't look too deeply into it until 2077 consumed my life. I later found out that the video game is actually based on and connected to the TTRPG. I absolutely love D&D, so the thought of combining Cyberpunk and D&D definitely got my attention. It's crazy that I just now did a search to learn how to play, and this was one of the first videos that popped up, despite it being uploaded 4 hours ago.
I played 2020 back in the 90s. It's definitely grittier than D&D, TPK should be more common. If your characters do something stupid, they will die. That said, having run through Red rules, they balanced it much better and cut the danger down a little bit.
A star walks into a black hole but doesn't seen phased. The black hole then turns to the star and says, "I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation."
Because just recording actors voices is way cheaper than scripting entire interactive cut scenes with a combination of custom and dynamic animations and turning on and off other random encounters along the travel path of the story section.
@@hexazalea1793 Except V's not and every fixer is still willing to deal with him despite the heist being cocked up and Dex getting flatlined because of it. I want to headcanon because Wakako and Padre know you, If you pick street kid Lifepath, he vouches for you once you come back from the dead.
Nobody actually knows you were in that heist. Everyone involved is either dead, or your pal already, amd the only corpo agent who initially tracks you down, gets made the scapegoat for the murder, and ends up working with you.
The fixation on realism in combat by some players and GMs may be linked to the CP2020 FNFF rules being developed based on actual Police and FBI data on firefights. It was intended to be the most realistic and deadly RPG combat possible.
Thank you with this video! I've decided to launch my own Cyberpunk Red campaign with my college friends so our studies get less boring. I'm going to make them play in our own city! Lots of love from Montreal
Made a character. My D&D group was talking about playing this next. I decided to check out the rules, realized it was basically the same as D&D in the broad stroke mechanics except d10 based instead of d20. I then got to character creation, read what makes a good Cyberpunk character, had already played a chunk of 2077, and decided ‘well, if they recommend go big or go home, then wake up samurai, we got a city to burn.’ I then accidentally made Johnny Silverhand. There are differences, but my character is a Solo turned Rockerboy seeking to bring down the current situation. With fire. Aesthetically, it is hard to mix up my character with Johnny because I made a short female character who dresses like a hippy. Not the super peaceful type of hippie, but the angry protesting type. This is a complete disowning of her former Corpo Assassin life. As the first person to make a character and the one who had a goal, the next two built upon that. The next one accidentally built Neo from the Matrix. At this point, we had two accidental Keanu Reeves characters and the party agreed to lean into the accidental theme and create an entire Keanu Reeves expy party.
@@JonJonTheWise I fully expect my character to die. The plan is a 3 act structure. Act 1: Get our feet under us since at the beginning because I bought a bunch of cyberware (thematically tied to being a former corpo assassin who had a lot more removed than I’m starting with) I have a Heavy pistol with 10 bullets and a knife as far as an arsenal goes. Act 2: Build a cult. Out of game I’m calling it a cult. In game, I’ll probably call it something else, but it is a cult built upon the ideal of making a kinder, happier future. Act 3: The Final mission. Turn the cult into an army (I plan to be Rockerboy 10 here for max effect) and set them on tearing down the current institutes. If I can get a hold of a nuke, you know I’ll be using one to blow up something, but the general idea is to be basically Johnny 2.0: Bigger and Better. Best result: My character lives and in the epilogue is leading an army on a crusade. Expected result: My character bites it, the movement is subsumed by a corpo entity, and by 2077 Everything my character did is forgotten and we are at canon game situation. My character gets a drink named after them at the Afterlife. Bad result: My character bites it before Act 3 or early enough in Act 3 that the plan unravels. No matter what, this is going to be about the journey, not the destination. And so long as it is a fun ride, I’ll be happy.
I read through the entire book before starting my first session, and this is a great starting video! I might start having new players watch this and save it for my own refreshers if I ever need it. First time DMing for CP:RED and I think my session went really well. Had them start at a concert where most of the party was hired by the Rockerboy's manager. Unluckily for the Rockerboy, his lifepath had an exec enemy and some boostergangers were hired to "deal with him" during a concert. Thought it went really well. Planning on expanding the story to the players going to find out why the boostergangers raided the venue after a nice dinner with the manager for a job well done and to give info on the location of the gangers hideout. Hoping to make a big conspiracy around multiple rockerboys of varying popularity where exec is trying to bring many of them down. Really excited to let my players dive into this universe.
@@w1ntrmute It's a really simple start but when I ran it, it allowed a lot of my players to get used the system. They were having quite a bit of fun with it. One rolled a double crit on a dance roll to try to dodge a autofire so I gave it to him. Rewarded that with some nice rep as I still had civilians in the room. You definitely have to pull out good moments with a start like that I feel, especially because it goes into combat, but it helped immensely on being a good first session.
Starting a game with some buddies tonight! DM made a comment of, "And I mean, if you want to do a full conversion and turn yourself into like, some cyber werewolf, you can." "Got it, thanks." "...for what?" "I'm making a German Mad inventor, trying to do full conversions to make himself a cybernetic werewolf."
I play for the first time this week, and so far made a medtech who was an ex-trauma team member, left after an incident (only game master knows) and corpo since then sits on his neck at all times. He runs a clinic, and funds it by edgerunning, but sometimes that wont be enough, and thats when corpo sees him... most vulnerable and will demand favours in exchange of funding the clinic a bit
I'm going to be sending this video to friends who want to play, as this does a much better job than the books (from a dm/gm perspective) of explaining the basics. Hopefully, this will bring a couple more people around to playing.
I would LOVE to get a game of this going. I've played vampire, World of darkness, DnD and through it all its ended up being dark and gritty. I've always loved the cyberpunk concept since the 80's and this is just my thing... Just can't get a group together.....sucks to be me 😒
Something I find interesting is that Cyberpunk can still realistically happen in the future. Sure maybe not the same path but still the same result. So it'll feel realistic for a very very long time
Dang, I really wanna play this, but my group is ONLY interested in playing D&D. I don't mind it, but I'd like to explore other RPGs too, especially this one.
Thanks for this. Been really wanting to check the game out (and 2020) and this was a great overview. I'm relieved it's not as complicated as I expected. I'm coming from decades of D&D and there are a lot of similarities but enough differences to make this really exciting. I'll definitely be buying some books and stuff soon.
Never been into these type of games but honestly now looking into it, seems kinda fun. But like, it requires others to play with and I don’t know anyone who would do this with me.
Joining our discord community or other similar ones is the best way to find people to play with. In our discord we have affiliate server links that are dedicated to playing the game
I bought 2077 at release and barely played but i jus picked it back up a cpl weeks ago and been obsessed w it beat it and immediately made a new character. Im starting to get into the lore and just now learned its based off a tabletop! I been meaning to get back into d&d but this seems so fuckin sick i gotta try this
Everything about this makes me want to make a stack of throwaway characters I don't care about. I refuse to put time and energy into a lovingly crafted character that can be suddenly yanked away from me without recourse.
I'm gonna run some Cyberpunk for my friends, changing the pace from playing a lot of D&D and this will definitely help them grasp the rules and how the world works. It'll be out of Night City and in fact completely out of the US though, dunno how good or disastrous that would turn out to be! Also is there anything out there containing all the charts so there'd be no need to go back and forth to find them in the book?
Thanks for this. Great vid. I recently watched Seth Skorkowsky's vid on this and we was kind of down on it in comparison with 2020. What's your take on the respective strength/weaknesses?
I think Seth makes some good points but I’m not sad about the changes at all. I enjoy a lot of the changes compared to 2020. In time this game will be just as granular as 2020 in my opinion.
Thanks for the Vid! Perfect timing, too :) Just sent it over to the new player joining an ongoing campaign tonight. Since they come from DnD the direct reference helps a lot to introduce the often similar mechanics.
Thank you for making this playlist good sir, an ongoing campaign of mine is going to be coming to an end and we are trying cyberpunk next, I plan on binging your videos for the next couple of weeks I am glad that there is a content creator with this much passion for this game as you, It makes coming into the hobby that much easier
In your Skills short you stated Explosives allows you to manufacture and employ explosives, but when I referenced Core rules that seemed like it would be locked to Tech's maker/fabricate ability. GM discretion or update to rules/corrected errors in print?
Your voice is so relaxing. Thanks for the amazing video! By the way, I think I've heard of you before. Maybe Asmongold reacted to one of your vids or something 😅
Cyberpunk diverged way before 1990. America never dropped Nukes on Japan for example, leading to Arasaka basically completely taking over the Japanese nation on a corporate level and then using that as a backbone to become a world power.
Great walkthrough, have a subscribe. I'm considering which system to run since I'm burned out on D&D 5e and really don't want to support WoC anymore. On my short list, I've got Shadowrun 6e (seems crazy fun, but also seems like it requires a MBA), The Sprawl (love how it paces with William Gibson's world, but not crazy about the mission clock mechanic... also seems a little slender on the rules), Delta Green (not really cyberpunk but I like the terror aspect) and Cyberpunk Red. How easy/difficult would you say Cyberpunk Red is to get running, against some of these other systems? I've got the Core Rulebook on the way; are there any other resources that you would suggest as need-to-have?
Cyberpunk Red is very easy to get into. It’s designed to be streamlined for brand new players and gms All you need is the Core rulebook and maybe black chrome. The new cyberpunk red edgerunners kit is the best thing to buy. It’s about to come out. I made a video about it recently.
@JonJonTheWise Your videos and channel are VERY helpful and informative. Thank you! I have a quick question. Do you think it it is feasible to run Cyberpunk Red online only using Theater of the Mind for combat?
Yes it’s very doable. You just have to make sure you do a good job explaining where everyone is standing during their turn. There is a major disconnect with the theater in your mind and the one in the player’s. Keep it as simple as you can to avoid confusion. Otherwise, visual cues are a tool as well. You don’t need a full battlemap to put some minis down. And thank you so much for your support
Thisis a cool insight! Althoughive never played a ttrpg (is that what this is?) But im intrigued to start oneandget into these! What would be the best way to start? If tbat makes sense?
Ttrpg = tabletop rpg So yes! You got it. I would recommend going to drivethrurpg.com and download “Cyberpunk Red Easy Mode”. It’s everything you need to play the game and it’s free. Then get one or two buddies together and run a quick/easy scenario after you’ve read all the rules.
Ive just started dnd and my dm is not explaining the cyberpunk part to me, all he's said is it's gothic cyberpunk and idk if there's a difference at all
I'm currently running a game now been going on a year almost 2 and I have 2 players sadly well 3 technically but it's a corporate and a rocker extremely out there but is working out lol
Buddies and me tried a DnD game today with my brother DMing and didn’t enjoy it. Told them I’d try DM but we have to do it my style and cyberpunk is my style
How do I actually play this game I really want to get into it. Is there some kind of discord or community page where I can find people to play with? Do u need to actually be in person or is there a way to play this game online. Please someone let me know I would love to try and play
There should be a link in the description for our discord. You can play online virtually or in person. If you’re playing online, our discord is a good place to start. We have “affiliate server” friends that run games publicly. If you want to play in person, you should connect with your local gaming shop to see if there are any games being run that you can join. Finding a game can be difficult though. But if you join our discord, I’m sure some folks will point you in the right direction
I have a question on movement and range. When your playing on a grid and let’s say the range is 0-6 m/y do you double that range on a grid? Or is one square equal to a yard? This goes back to movement being MOVE or MOVE x2. A little clarity would help, thanks.
So I’ve been playing 2077, watched Edgerunners, and have skimmed the RED book. Is there a central community or discord where people who want to try this ttrpg out gather? There’s a lot of hype it seems but not a lot of info about finding the playing community.
Hey jonjon I have a silly question What is the skill(s) equivalent of knowledge skills from 5e/pathfinder U know like(arcana, history, religion, nature or...)
It adds quickhacking. You can use your net actions to connect to someone's neuroport. You have to roll to see if you get in undetected and you have to roll to upload quickhacks. Once they detect you they can try to force you out, and if you fail to upload a quickhack you can't upload any more on the enemy on your turn. I like that it streamlines combat for netrunners so they aren't having to do a mini dungeon crawl in the net during a shootout to take control of a turret or something.
Wait, wait, I need clarification. You say Stat, Skill and Role are judged from 1 to 10. Yet the corebook says you can have a starting max of 8 in Stats, 6 in Skill, 4 in Role. This is important though. I only have the jumpstart, but I am looking through a free online version of the core book. Thing is, even the core is contradicting itself. On page 110 it says that Grafted Muscle and Bone Lace can't increase Body beyond 10, yet on the 364 page(s) it says it can't raise it above 11. If it increases Body by 2, then does it mean that a natural Major Hero character with 8 in all stats is peak human condition? This does bother me, because in that case a "natural" Major Hero is a King of all Trades Genius Bruce Lee Swartznegger Silver Tongue Mr Handy which is absurd, even for a starting Major Hero in an RPG. I'd prefer a New Vegas approach, because at least it gives you a quirky, yet effective short description of how good you are at that given level. i.e. having "Doomsday Pecs" at 9 Strength is enough to give me an understanding that my character is swole af. With a starting min 2 and max 8, it's pretty strange and hard to have an understanding of just how much good am I. Am I a genius if my Int is 8? Am I an olympic Arnie at 8 Body? Doesn't seem like it and I honestly don't understand why it's like that. Not only that, but also with a classic 1 to 10 it's easier to convert Cyberpunk 2020 characters like Adam Smasher, which would've given a clear example of an endgame character, which in return may give the players and GM a better understanding of how to build a character. DV description on page 129 does give a general guide, but it doesn't explain why the Max and Min limit of 8 and 2 respectively, unless it's for balance reasons, but that is contradicted by the Grafted Muscle limit of 10 in Body, since Cyberware is stronger/better than meat. What should I do? Homebrew? Go RAW? Mix up or edit it into a 1 to 10 but keep other parts?
Minimum stats, skills, role abilities are 1 and maximum are 10. The character creation limitations are there for balancing. This way every starting character starts around the same spot. With other things like cyberware or drugs, you can boost those numbers. The best natural athlete will always be at a Body 8. Anything past that is unnatural. 10 being the max and anything past 10 being a super edge case. Do whatever makes you happy
@@JonJonTheWise Thanks! If you don't mind helping further, things like Cool and Int (and similar stats), do they not follow the same meta rules like Body, since they aren't physically tied? Because while the 8 Body (forced) limit is understandable, with it being the physical human limit for a "natural" character. Things like Cool or Int aren't. As a GM I want to allow players to have the ability to make logical (i.e. such a human can exist from birth) characters with the rule that anything above 8 in a Stat comes with a x2 price for 9, and x4 for 10 (similar to how IP is spent). However, I can see them asking, "What does an 8 or 10 Cool or Int mean? How good is that from a RP perspective?" In this case, using Int as an example, if I were describe a 10 Int, would it mean their character is a Genius or near Genius level?
@@JonJonTheWise Okay, thanks again for the quicker answers! I think I'll use the DV and expanded Skill descriptions as a bases. Then guesswork on converting Adam Smasher's stats into RED to get a picture of an endgame character.
Fingers crossed my DM doesn't make lifestyle expenses as much of a problem as the podcast I saw clumsily trying to run this system. I basically gave up on the game entirely up until recently after how absolutely lame it made cyberpunk look. Like, absolutely substance over style. I felt a twinge of cringe when you brought it up, but you didn't make it sound like as much of a hassle as the half hour of spreadsheets I saw.
You have every right to feel the way you do. I will say though, we implemented that requirement to battle against bots and scammers. Since we added authentication measures, we have little to no bots disrupting our server
