Can you used slides on a normal acoustic instead of a resonator?
@jennifer6833
@jennifer6833 3 года назад
Aidan McCoy yes! You are not required to do it on a resonator. You can do it on: acoustic guitars, electric guitars, dobro/resonators, banjo and mandolin.

Hey Rhett I’ve been playing exclusively in open E for over ten years now, ever since I first heard Derek Trucks. I’m not as obsessed with Trucks as I was back then but I never gave up the tuning and stuck with it ever since. If you ever want to do a more in depth video or a lesson about chords in open E I think I could be a great resource. I love the way this tuning opens up the board for chords. It’s much more intuitive than standard tuning in my opinion.

@@aidanmccoy5034 not only can you play slide on any stringed instrument (I saw one guy use a slide on his piano’s strings!) you don’t really even have to use any of the brass, glass, or ceramic tubes that are specifically sold as “slides,” either. Some Rock Guitar gods have been grabbing their microphone stands and sliding it up and down the string(s) not to mention leaving the stand where it is and sliding the guitar, itself, back and forth. Admittedly, they tend to press the stand hard enough to where the strings get pushed down onto the frets, but that just makes a different sound to actual slide playing AND fretting your strings. I’ve grabbed beer bottles and cocktail glasses from the table in front of a nice-looking young lady and used those. If you ever try the latter, make sure you buy her a fresh drink. 😂

I suffered a stroke awhile back and my left handed being partially paralyzed, I figured my guitar playing days were over. Then I saw a guy playing slide guitar and I thought, “I can do that”. I watched your video tonight and about to get a slide and get started playing again. I’m a happy camper. Thanks for giving an old guitar picker a new lease on life.

My little brother was a piano player, I played guitar, my other little bro played drums. We would all pick up bass. When we I got a little older I became a bassist my piano playing brother picked up the guitar. In one month he was better than I ever was my eight years of playing. The next month he was ripping Duane Allman riffs with a slide in standard. Needless to say, my son is now taking piano lessons at age 6.

For those looking for a great slide, I recommend the Rich Robinson brass slide. First slide I ever used that really sits on your finger well due to the tapered shape inside it. You can put your hand pointing towards the floor and it wont slip off! Because it sits so well, I feel it offers a sense of accuracy other slides never could for me. Highly recommended!

First guitar,1964, after learning classical piano. Beatles changed my musical destiny > 'She Loves You,Yeah,Yeah,Yeah' 😳. Then I heard Duane Allman and bought a slide in 1974. Learned on a Ernie Ball 1.5" metal slide. It cost me $1.00 in 74'. I played it (48 Years Old) today after breaking my Jim Dunlop 202 this morning. I also have a brass slide that I keep on my bike (Versys 650) in case of a music emergency! 😅 Buying another 202 tomorrow because the lighter weight makes a quicker turnaround than any stainless or brass slide. Always on my left pinkie finger. 67 years old now,but I still play > "Eat A 🍑 Peach" Thanks to Duane Allman for the inspiration and beautiful slide tracks! (Bass Fishing, Motorcycles,and Slide Guitar) > great hobbies from the Slide Master! 👀🎸😳🍑😁🏍️

Nice job Rhett, how nice? Joe Walsh is on some RU-vid videos that are fairly old also suggesting the open E tuning for slide. I'm an old guy, not so "up" on who's who in music since maybe '92. Stumbled upon you here and said to myself, "This Rhett Shull guy seems to be one heck of an accomplished musician, I like his style and positive attitude, fun an interesting music." Now giving Joe Walsh advise, no question in my mind you are one of those special people who have a lot to give! Great job, new band sounds really cool. I hope you put out a really diverse catalog, I haven't really heard any cool new music in some time and I'd really like to feel that excitement like I did hearing Led Zeppelin for the first time when I raided my father's record collection out of boredom and curiosity almost 40 years ago and hearing crazy different stuff on the same LP like Immigrant Song, Since I've Been Loving You, and Tangerine. I often joke that my favorite country band is Zeppelin because of Tangerine and being an 80's child I listened to Waylon Jennings Good Ol Boys every Friday night on CBS at pm. David owns a Fender double neck and two Jedson (red and blonde/white) purpose built slide guitars that sit on legs parallel to the floor. Probably more but those are just the ones I know about. The Jedsons are the ones you see him play on stage from the late 70's onward. See the Pulse video that is a modified Jedson. The guitar he used to record One of these Days was the double neck Fender. The Fender double neck is fairly rare the Jedson's are more common. Neither use frets as a guitar player knows them but position markers that at first glance look like frets but are not. Playing one of those is a whole different world.

I recorded a song in an open D tuning with slide, and didn't realize until a couple hours later (when mixing) that I really needed a quick guitar solo to break things up. I'd already tuned back to Standard by then, and ended up doing the solo in Standard. The result was that I ended up using a lot of Gypsy-jazz 6th chords that would have been extremely inconvenient in Open Anything, and I was easily able to do slides into minor chords on the first three strings. It sounded not only like two entirely different guitars, but two entirely different performers. You know what would be a neat gizmo? Something like a B bender, but it could raise THREE strings with a single motion rather than just one. Then you could switch between standard and open E (or Drop D and Open D) with the flick of a lever. I'm thinking of something like a Bigsby, only more focused on stability rather than fluidity, and allowing each string affected to be hand-tweaked.
@raweymoore
@raweymoore 4 года назад
Duesenberg actually make a bridge for this, called the multibender. It uses levers to bend individual strings, a bit like a pedal steel. It comes with two levers, but you can buy more levers and fit one for each string.

This is a great primer.I'll just add my two cents for those afraid of breaking strings while tuning up. I just tune down a whole step to D standard, then tune up to D major. Peace.
@mal2ksc

Also you aren't going to break strings tuning them up two semitones. If you did they'd be snapping every time you try to bend. You might not want to tune them high _and_ bend them at the same time, though, unless it's a plain (not wound) 3rd string which has the least tension of all the strings to start with and can easily handle a bit more.

You are truly preserving the art form with great authenticity. I’ve been playing for years but, oftentimes, I forgo some important techniques that would elevate what I’m trying to convey. There’s so much delicate nuance in all of this that gets lost in the shuffle... even in the blues shuffle. ;)

Great vid.. I was always bewildered by Billy Gibbon's slide work, as well as Joe Walsh, they play the slide on the middle finger. Thats how I learned. On my middle finger. Just felt better for me....Watching Billy for years playing "Just Got Paid" is a thing of beauty...

Having seen and enjoyed a number of video's that you have done, I was delighted to see this lesson on slide guitar. I really enjoyed this lesson Rhett, I've struggled to get my head around the slide guitar techniques, like you rightly pointed out I became disillusioned with it. You have identified many of the issues that I had encountered, even the sizing of the slide. This lesson has given me renewed hope that I can improve and put things in layman's terms. Many thanks

Amazing sound! I’m a complete beginner. 51 yrs old. Picked up the guitar when Covid 19 hit. Sorry if I ask any dumb questions but am I understanding this correctly that when playing slide guitar, other than the finger with the slide on and the other finger behind it muting the strings like a bar, the left hand isn’t ever gonna fret a note? And are ALL the chords created using the slide and not using any other finger of the left hand? (That would be awesome news cause it makes it easier for a beginner cause I don’t know that many chords yet).
@darthjarjarbinks8953
@darthjarjarbinks8953 4 года назад
Well, slide is usually (not always) played in open tunings, which allow you to play with one finger, meaning you never need to fret the guitar to play a chord. The same goes for any single notes. Many people will fret guitars and then use the slide to accent their playing. It just depends on what you want to do. Check out Justin Johnson. Great slide player. Don’t expect to get to his level overnight, but you can get a good idea of how he uses it. Other thing I would suggest is checking out is many blues players from the past, like Robert Johnson (the two aren’t related btw).

I pula,you will progress faster playing slide then just playing in the normal fashion,well I did ....then when you do play in the conventional manner you have the advantage of getting an (ear) for chords and notes.Try slide for a while and see how fast you get better because it's so enjoyable and rewarding and you can belt out tunes and riffs in no time,good luck

Tuning to open-E on an acoustic/resonator scares me. I'd rather tune down to open-D than up to open-E. If I really want E, I can capo 2.

@@anotherthursday4419 String tension. On acoustic, I play a lot of vintage guitars and don't wanna stress the bridge. I've had a bridge break on a pre-war acoustic once when I was just tuning up to standard; I wouldn't wanna try open-E. On a resonator, some have been prone to cone collapse when the string tension is above standard.

Tuning! Do NOT just wind up the A D and G strings as instructed. ALSO, go back & check all the strings, because chances are, when you wound up those 3 strings, the other 3 you didn't touch just went flat without you noticing. It's just basic physics and unavailable on most guitars.

@@danielvelkovski3156 You'll still have a bit more pull on the neck, which means the other three strings are all going to go a little bit flat. Of course if you own a guitar with a floating bridge, you're probably in the habit of checking all the strings any time you alter one by any significant amount.

If slide is positioned correctly, it is your guitar intonation that is bad ie: it might be in tune but loose tune the higher up the neck you go.

Rhett, thanks so much for your slide contributions. You were really my 1st exposure to slide instruction. I have a great guitar teacher that picked up the ball and ran with it. I did a lot of hopping around at first with gear. I'm playing mostly in open E with a glass rockslide on a strat, tele, and a PRS Custom 24. I know there's a lot of greats, but not to take up too much time, I was blown away with the works of Freddie King & Duane Allman thanks to my teacher. Appreciate your devotion to the blues!
