Hey, I’m Donald Bell for Cool Tools and today I’m going to show you a particularly great and affordable nail clipper. I promise it won’t be gross. You can find a link to it down in the description.
Maybe it’s a gender thing, but I’m generally clueless about nail care or any nail cutting innovations.
Up until recently, the clippers I’ve used to trim my finger and toe nails are essentially an unchanged design from the ones I had growing up.
On a whim, went looking for some new clippers to keep in the garage. I’ll tell you more about that in a minute. What I found was this new breed of wide mouth clippers.
They’re manufactured under dozens of different brands, but the ones I got say Vepkuso on them. Judging from all the identical looking options under different names, I have to imagine there’s just one factory churning these out and slapping different brands on them.
If there’s an original, superior design these are all imitating, let me know in the comments.
They’re advertised as thick nail clippers, and you’ll notice that the jaws open up about twice as wide as conventional ones.
They’re able to do this by moving the spring mechanism from the head of the clipper to a little fold down leaf in the back.
This folds down for storage, with a little magnetic clasp that keeps it together. When you’re ready to use them, you just unfold the leaf and get to business.
These also came with a small file, which is useful. It took me a day or two to realize there was a protective film on the file that you need to remove, so look out for that.
Now as to why I keep these in the garage. I had an epiphany that the bathroom is actually a really inconvenient place to trim your nails -- especially your toenails.
You have to awkwardly sit somewhere and place a wastebasket under your foot and there’s always one or two that shoot onto the floor despite your best efforts.
So why not take the whole business outside? If you’re lucky enough to have a little outside space and decent weather, you can trim your nails out here and let the clippings fly with reckless abandon.
Because I have to pass through my garage on the way out to my yard, I just hang these here on a nail and grab them on my way out.
Maybe that’s a little life hack you can use too. Or maybe everybody already does this and a lifetime of apartment living prevented me from catching on until now.
