A Better Route Planner: how to use it and how accurate is it?!

Abetterrouteplanner.com - or ABRP if you like acronyms - is an indispensable part of my toolkit as an EV driver. It's a route finder (as the name suggests) but far more accurate than most as it takes topography into account as well as allowing you to tweak loads of options.
This video is split into two halves: the first is about how to use ABRP and the second is to test its accuracy. Unfortunately, due to roadworks, accidents (not me, thankfully), heavy rain and diversions, ABRP ended up being way off.
Since I was undertaking a motorway journey and people have commented that I shouldn't be using Eco mode, this time I've used Normal mode with auto regen. Sadly, again, it's difficult to know if it's made any difference due to the road conditions (I wasn't able to reach full speed for long on the motorway) but hey - I've edited it all so it's here for your pleasure.
I also end up going to an Ecotricity charger. Does it work? Yes, actually. I know, I was just as amazed as you.
There's also a tiny sneaky peek at OVMS doing its funky thang as well. Detailed video will be coming soonish!
So it's a bit of a weird mix of things in this video - a pot pourri, one might say - but I hope you find it interesting all the same.

A handy use case is to plan a route with your home as the departure and the destination, and the actual meeting location you go to as a way point. That way, the route planner can figure out an optimal route with charging stops in both directions (if necessary), in case the meeting location doesn't have a charger.

Just put in the single journey and click the 'return' icon (a reverse arrow) and it plans both ways

Great video, I love the increased accuracy from live data. I love my 2016 Chevy Volt (plug-in hybrid) and my next vehicle will be a BEV. That being said, I really don’t understand why so many reviewers hate stopping at a gas station- pull in, pay, pump, leave, in under 5 mins. It’s terrible for the environment so I’ll happily stay at a charging station in the future, but “gas stations are terrible so take 5 times as long at a charger” isn’t a convincing argument. Am I spoiled with an abundance of options in Texas? (Side note, a properly maintained ICE vehicle should NOT smell like fuel unless something is broken, like the rear hatch seal)

On auto regen the car uses radar to track obstacles in front of it. If anything is detected, the regen box turns from white to blue. Only then it will adjust the regen strength automatically, else it uses what is preselected.

A feature I really need in all these SatNav systems, is avoiding highways where it makes sense. I have a route at about 250km (highway) that I regularly drive. I can take the highway at 110-130km/h or broad country roads at mostly 80-90km/hr, but hitting the highway at the last 20km of the stretch. Time difference is only about 20 minutes total, as the country road is shorter than the highway route. Difference in consumption is huge though and with just about 20 minutes longer, I tend to chose to save consumption over speed, unless I have a reason to get there or home faster. I haven't seen a SatNav that compares consumption and travel time and lets you easily chose better consumption if travel time is not massively different. Most can avoid highway all-together but I like it to consider travel time and consumption and chose a route combining country roads and highways for best consumption while still keeping travel time down. I usually use Google Maps as my prefered SatNav and even when chosing the slower route option it defaults to the fast route as soon as I hit Start. Then I switch to slower route again but I constantly get alternate faster route suggestions while driving, that I have to click away every time.

If you're not using the roofbox, take it off. And remove the roof rack. Doesn't matter if it is empty, it causes drag. Even the roof rack causes drag that will make a significant difference.

Unfortunately it’s a heavy, bulky thing to remove and I had no-one around to help get it off at the time. Next time though, it’s coming off! I miss the wonderful efficiency I used to have!

I've seen three of our videos and I like them. I drive a 2019 Kia Niro EV EX. Perhaps you've covered this in one of the videos I haven't seen, but I've heard you mention a few times that it is generally preferable to charge your battery to 80% (as opposed to 100%) because the time it takes to increase the charge from 80% to 100% is considerably more than the amount of time it takes to charge from, for example, 0% to 20%, or 60% to 80%. It's my understanding, however (and this is from reading the Owner's Manual) that another, perhaps even more important reason to only charge up to 80% is that charging to 100% regularly will prematurely degrade the battery. I'm assuming you know this, but found it odd that I haven't heard you mention it along with the charge time factor. Thanks for your work!

Whilst under lockdown I’m enjoying watching your videos. Looking forward to your Italy trip 👍 Other vlogs suggest that Ecotricity are free when there’s no internet connection and there was a cross through the WiFi symbol on the display. How on earth can they improve their network though if it’s free 🙄
@MrEV
@MrEV 4 года назад
That’s true, and I think that’s been part of the problem for them. They bought unreliable chargers in the first place and then, due to them being offline or on free vend, haven't made enough profit to justify improvements in the system.

Keep in mind that it's more efficient to charge while the battery is at low state of charge, which means ABRP will actually prefer charging the car small amounts more often rather than charging it all the way just a few times. So any route can be likely be done with fewer charges, it will just take longer overall. :)

The charging speed of 39kW is probably because you are getting coldgate. The e-Niro limits the charging speed when the battery is to cold. Also, i consider ABRP to be to pessimistic. It has happen a lot of times with my Leaf, but it still is a good tool.
@TassieEV

I noticed your route back there was a Ultra-charger nearby to your starting point and you would have charged at near to 70kW so less time and no more charges to get you home plus probably more reliable than ecotricity, well back in 2019 at least now in 2022 with Ecotricity being partnered with Gridserve would be a different story. You should do an update on this video with the new ABRP including the App now.

One thing that really annoys me is you can't literally delete an assigned stop the program selects. In some cases you don't need nor want to stop there and can't just right click and delete and refigure the route. They really need to make that available.

I need to play with auto regen some more. I think it uses map too so need destination set in Nav. Not sure what happens if you use google maps with android auto instead but I’m guessing it doesn’t. I tend to use cruise control on motorway most of the time so auto regen is automatic with that. I think.
@RWBHere
@RWBHere 4 года назад
It's worth remembering that, when you had the Leaf, you would hardly ever travel at above the motorway speed limit. You would likely be pottering along at no more than 56 mph. That would reduce significantly the number of recharges which you would need. As for political correctness, many people don't consciously abide by it, because PC often only saves to _highlight_ differences, rather than to eliminate them.

At 24:20 you mention that the Kia SAT NAV doesn't take into consideration the topography when estimating power consumption. The link above is for the PHEV, which would be my choice of car since my daily roundtrip is 18 miles but still prefer the great hybrid distance for longer trips. Isn't the SAT NAV data the same between the EV and the PHEV? Thanks and learning a lot about my next car purchase.
