My name is Dave and I travel with my dog Bella in a 1987 Class A Motorhome. My channel is about full time RV Living in an older RV while keeping the wheels rolling on a budget. I do the repairs, updates and upgrades myself. I’ve become my own RV Mechanic/Medic! I seek boondocking opportunities every chance I can and power the RV with 500 watts of solar and approximately 500 amp hours of batteries. RV Resorts are just not our style!

In a few years your grandchild would love to sleep in the RV with granddaddy. The table into a bed is ideal.

I might try to make a shelf for under the TV for the xbox and other clutter that ends up on the dinnette. I just can't bring myself to make a permanent change to the dinette. There is 2,051 miles between Moomoo and her brush! lol

12 gauge is rated for 20 amp, 14 gauge is rated for 15 amp. 10gauge is rated for 30 amp, 8 gauge is for 40 amp, 6 gauge is 50amp, 4 gauge is rated up to 85 amps @ 75 degrees Celsius. All of these numbers and ratings are the safety factors for COPPER wire by the NEC. Connecting a 12 gauge wire to an 80 amp device can and will start a fire if it's not protected by a max 20 amp fuse or breaker
@KyleKrieg
@KyleKrieg 28 дней назад
I agree. 4 awg for 80 amp.
@russelbaird3342
@russelbaird3342 28 дней назад
Those ratings are for 120 V ac power , Dave is working with dc till he hits the converter . He will need to use the formula for dc when figuring wire size for the amount of amps he will be using . Amps are the power being consumed . Each device will have an ampere rating on it .the NEC can give him the necessary formulas, or Dave may know them , he is a smart guy.

@@russelbaird3342 Being an electrician I can tell you that regardless of AC or DC amperage and wire sizing are the same on both

@@FTRVDenny also an electrician , retired with over 50 years of service . And yes Amps are amps , the difference is in how you figure the amounts . Go back to your magic triangle , E over I and R , and plug in the values using 12 volts , then 120 volts .

@FTRVDenny 28 дней назад
@@russelbaird3342 I just did the calculation and researched it to verify and as expected, the correct wire size for a 12v DC 80A circuit is 4AWG Copper

16 gauge is only good for 8 amps max……. That is speaker wire. You need 10-2 minimum

80 amps is the 12v output. It only draws about 1200 watts of 110v

Hey, Dave I run a separate battery for my refrigerator I have an inverter charger on one. And then my other batteries for everything else is separate with separate Chargers and inverters I have two solar panels for the refrigerator on the roof and the other solar panels go to the other inverters. This way if the other stuff on my other inverters blows up or something it doesn't take out my refrigerator my refrigerator separate so I don't starve to death😂 have you looked in your walls underneath your refrigerator and in your hallway the walls they have a lot of dead space in there that you can redo and make it into a battery storage area and put a door on my old RV I did that with you'd be surprised how much storage space there is Behind the Walls there. The other thing is you need to put a grill in the wall of that seat where the battery is two reasons one it gets are that way and the other in case you ever have an overload or a wire burn on you and it starts smoking it gives you more time so the alarm goes off now I put a smoke detector in with my where my inverter and chargers are I also have that Tang fire suppression system
@DavesRVLife
@DavesRVLife 28 дней назад
We have similar systems. The system under the dinette is seperate from the main house system and is primarily for the refrigerator for the same reasons that you have stated. That system and the house system each have their own batteries, inverter, charger and 500w of solar each. The Bounder had those dead spaces you spoke of, but unfortunately, the Coachmen wasn't built that way.
