I like the concept of thinking about keeping things I love and what I want to bring with me in the future.

Love the idea of turning decluttering into building your future rather than deconstructing your past. So much more positive and hopeful.

I love this mind shift change of asking what I love and what to being into future. I typically conducted decluttering the way you started. I hold on to so many sentimental items but I think it’s still too much stuff…. This was a very helpful video. Thank you

You are so inspiring! Creative people really have a problem letting go of things. We already see the finished product while collecting the parts, which tend to become scattered and lost while we are still collecting things. My new system…..I create a project box with a sketch/ list of things I need in order to complete the project. This is a visual reminder of how many things I’m working on,keeps my space neat, and helps me complete things. This works better for me than storing like things with like things.

Really needed this today! Thank you! I have the hardest time to let go of books I never read and keep for a day in the life. It's so sad to get rid of them but I just know I probably won't read them.

I think that example with the shoes is also to say: I won’t regret decluttering this, because I’ll still have something to wear instead that I actually prefer

Even though I had decluttered my closet and bureau drawers a couple of years ago, this was a great reminder to look at what I have again. Took me less than an hour to focus on what I love and collect a number of items in good condition that I like, but never seem to reach for anymore. My local thrift store will be very happy tomorrow morning. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thank you Elin for the reminder. For me it is such a struggle to keep what I love vs my « what if »mindset and also the thought that it might be a waste. My brain knows it is not the case but to be able to exercise it in real life is what is hard for me.

Thanks Doc for your work on this channel and in particular this video. I’m at a point where I’m looking back at what I thought I needed a decade ago for roughly the next decade (2013-2023) and over provided. The idea of curating the future will sit front and center as I move forward into the next year, 5 years, and 10 years with removing excess and honing needs. Much appreciated.

Great tips! I haven't heard that one before - about changing your perspective to what you want to take forward rather than what you want to leave behind. I think that's really helpful if you're feeling stuck. Thanks!

Thank you for this video Elin, you did a wonderful job :) I had the same experience, after my initial decluttering where I got rid of huge amounts of stuff my perspective shifted. When I went through my home a third time and looked in all the closets and boxes I no longer asked myself "What can I get rid of?" but "What do I want to keep?". I was able to make a lot of progress that way. However, I think to shift your approach several requirements must be met: - You have to have confidence in your ability to declutter and make good decluttering decisions - You must have experienced that decluttering is not a bad thing and that the stuff you get rid of will not be missed and that the presence of this stuff actually made your life harder - You have to be in touch with your gut feelings regarding the items around you All these things are not given if you have never decluttered. So for most people it is necessary to focus on "What can I get rid of?" when they're just starting out. There is no gut intention, there is a lot of fear regarding loss and usually you will get rid of 80-90% of your stuff in the course of several declutters, so only keeping what you love when you got thorugh your stuff for the first time will result into HUGE amounts to declutter and that is simply anxiety enducing for most people. It's better to go slow. That being said, if you reach a plateau after your first or second round of decluttering, changing your perspective and focusing on what you want to keep might boost your progress. Spoiler: Further down the road you might find yourself pushing decluttering even harder by asking yourself if you can get by without this item :D

You described the many steps to this process so succinctly. Now I'm challenging myself with, "What would I 😂 take to live in a 10 x 20' room!

pov of someone who enjoy organisation process by nature: I learn WAY MORE with people that isn't. Organised people (me!) use to over complicated things, and when you don't have this obsess organising thinking by nature, most of the time you find better and simpler solution.

I'm sick of the SHAME I do to myself, etc. I like your approach. And yet ,Some of us may need therapy. Used to be able to clean. May try a video chat therapist 🌹❣️🙄

You inspired me! I sorted through my clothes. I've been curating my clothes for the past year or two and mostly want to keep them. But I tucked some away that I don't feel like wearing and decluttered some. Only leaving out ones I want to wear NOW!

This is a new perspective for me. Super helpful and motivating, to excitedly focus on building a desired future when choosing what to keep. 👍 I was definitely "that kid" with the messy school desk and messy bedroom. 🙋‍♀️ I found out as an adult I had ADHD and now realize I have low executive function skills when it comes to staying tidy and organized. I can only cope with a minimum amount of stuff.

I really like this idea of positive towards motivation, what do I love than the negative away from motivation I have been channelling "right i need to get rid of some of this" excited about trying out this new perspective on tomorrow's tasks.
