Whether you're a local or a visitor, there is a new way to get around in South Florida, and for some it may be an excellent way to get to or from your cruise or flight. We've starting taking Brightline Trains' new high-speed service from Boca Raton to Ft Lauderdale International Airport, Miami International Airport, Port Miami, and Port Everglades.
In this video we discuss the cost, process, options, and experience so you can decide if it's a good way for you to get around the next time your cruising out of South Florida.
*UPDATE*
Shortly after making this, it seems Brightline Trains stopped running shuttles to local cruise ports. While this is disappointing, it doesn't change our general recommendation. Why? Premium fare passengers get private complimentary transportation to the ports, still (must be arranged in advance via the app), and Smart fare guests will find that UberX fares from the stations to PortMiami or Port Everglades run $10-20. If you arrange these connections via the Brightline App, they'll sync with train schedules and arrive just in time for you, without incurring waiting fees.
If you're thinking about booking a cruise, resort stay, theme park visit, or any other vacation, travel smarter by getting help from Touring & Cruises (formerly TouringPlans Travel). You can contact them by filling out the form at cruisehabit.co...

We used the Brightline back in December for our Virgin Voyage Cruise. Flew in and out of Fort Lauderdale. The train in premium class with checked luggage was cheaper than private car without the traffic. Highly recommend it.

You've a lot of catching up to do with the rest of the world, America in terms of efficient mass land public transport. But it's a good start.

No doubt. It's miles removed from what many European and Asian cities offer, for sure. A single line, at a high cost, with low service intervals. It is, however, significantly better than options we had for this route in the past, and much nicer (in terms of comfort and such) that other trains I've taken in the US.

This will be a great option for us when Brightline reaches Jacksonville. For instance we would take Amtrak down to Florida then transfer to Brightline and connect directly to the Port of Miami.

Thanks so much. It'll definitely open up options if you have a couple extra hours - or if you want to add parks visits. I'll be interested in taking it from here (South Florida) to Disney, but also to Port Canaveral.

@@CruiseHabit that Port Canaveral connection is going to be amazing. Seriously envious of a good train service. Would be nice to visit Disney Land without flying or a 6hr drive through LA.

@CruiseHabit do you happen to know when in 2023 the station in Orlando going to be open? My only other question do you know if there be a stop in Port Canaveral? I mean it would be nice actually since the other major cruise port is over there. Thank you :)
@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit Год назад
While nothing is set in stone, it seems the Orlando station is likely to open in June of this year (they've said Q2, and I've heard June). I'm not aware of plans for a stop at Port Canaveral. I suspect there'd need to be buy in from the cruise industry, which is short on cash, since while VERY interesting to cruisers, and some commuters, I don't suspect the consumer demand is nearly as significant as other parts of the project. It's about 45 miles from the Orlando station at MCO to Port Canaveral, so it's still quite helpful to that port for those coming from South Florida (locals or those flying in here for vacation or cost reasons). Perhaps we'll see some better shuttle options to the port once the Orlando route is operational.

Way better than flying on American Airline Airbus A300 from Miami to Orlando, can't believe they put us on wide body planes on that short flight. On brightline there trains are narrow body.
@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit Год назад
Train widths are restricted based on fitting on tracks, through tunnels, past/into stations, etc. With planes it's a matter of economics. As for the wide body aircraft, that is surprising. They want to ensure they can fill every seat (esp since larger aircraft require more fuel), but on shorter routes there is another factor. A massive portion of the fuel consumed on a flight is used to climb out, the efficiency of more bodies on the plane increases on longer routes. I'll bow to the better knowledge of others on this matter, but I'd not have expected a wide body aircraft flying from Orlando to S Florida.

Not true in 2024 at least! The Brightline website has no mention of free shuttle to cruise ports!!!!

They free shuttle was dropped after the making of this video, unfortunately. We noted this in the video description and pinned comments. Perhaps we'll do another video discussing this when we take the S Florida Orlando route sometime.

We are 5 minutes from MCO. I’m interested in the train to PE, but it becomes a matter of $$ ultimately. Not having the hassle of I-95 or the Turnpike is worth something, but it’s not worth an unlimited amount. We shall see.

Just tried to book a Brightline ticket from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, with an Uber pick up to take us on to the FL cruise port, but it keeps saying that there are no Uber rides at the moment. Any suggestion as to why this would be?
@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit 11 месяцев назад
Sorry, cruising and just got to this. You can request an Uber on arrival at the station and it'll be fine - that's what I do. Pre-arranging helps with timing, but in most cases will only save you a minute or two.

The Tri-Rail trains are cheaper and there is a station at the airport. Do a review of that option too please.
@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit Год назад
It's worth exploring, but with many more stops it takes longer. They're also less timely, often running very late, shutting down for short periods, etc. Add in it being much less clean and comfy, and it isn't as appealing in some ways. To your point, however, they do go closer to the airport. They're slated to get a new fleet of trains, so perhaps when that happens we'll do a review.

Why are the "shuttles" (10 minutes seems a long time to wait, it doesn't take that long to get out of a railway station even Paris Gare du Nord) even needed? Is there no bus? No taxi rank?
@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit Год назад
You can take cabs or Uber anywhere, but shuttles are a nice option that is as convenient while saving a few dollars. The ten mins seems a reasonable time, especially since some may have more luggage, walk slower, need to stop at the restroom, etc. The Miami station is big, so even without stops or slowdowns it take several minutes to get from the train to the curb.
@seprishere
@seprishere Год назад
@@CruiseHabit I don't think it takes 10 minutes even at Paris Gare du Nord or Berlin Hauptbahnhoh unless you're disabled. Besides, in cities with good public transport, there is a frequent bus, metro or tram or something similar, so if you do need 10 or 20 or 30 minutes you can spend the time and move on immediately afterwards rather than worrying about the time of your "shuttle".

@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit Год назад
Yup. Unfortunately this change was made right when we posted, so we noted it in the description and a pinned comment. We've spoken with Brightline on this and it's not slated to change (as of last check). We have taken Brightline to the port since, and substituted the shuttle with a short Uber - still much better (for us) than Ubering all the way from Palm Beach or Central/North Broward.

What is the estimated journey time from Orlando to Miami? It seems to be a bit under 200 miles, so slightly shorter than Preston to London Euston which is (in normal times) 128 minutes. (It was reliably that in Virgin times, Avanti have been less reliable.)
@xoxxobob61
@xoxxobob61 Год назад
Orlando to Miami is around 250 Miles and takes about 3.5 to 4 hours if the traffic is good. Try to avoid getting to Southeast Florida after 3 PM since the Rush hour is quite bad.
@seprishere
@seprishere Год назад
@@xoxxobob61 I DID mean by rail, not by road! A *drive* from Preston to Euston would easily be over four hours, quite possibly considerably longer!
@xoxxobob61
@xoxxobob61 Год назад
@@seprishere Ok Understood! The only train service between Miami & Orlando now is AMTRAK which takes about 6 hours. The new Brightline trains will serve Orlando sometime later this year & should take about 3 hours.
@seprishere
@seprishere Год назад
@@xoxxobob61Quite! 6 hours seems about the same average speed as Blackpool North to York which does stop on average every 10 miles (as would be expected for a regional semi-fast train). The Moorgate to Stevenage stoppers (a pain to calculate mileage as the mileage engine didn't want to work so I had to get the Sectional Appendix to get chainages, and probably did it wrong but got 30 miles and 28 chains) are about 66 minutes, with 19 intermediate stops, comes to 27.6 mph, rather than the 33.3 mph you say the Amtrak is.
@xoxxobob61
@xoxxobob61 Год назад
@@seprishere The issue is that AMTRAK is Government funded so they have to serve cities & towns in between unlike BrightLine which is privately owned.
