I wouldn't have tried Distress paint on the gel plate. Most pickup layers are so thin you can see a little through them.

I’m not an expert, but your paint is too wet and maybe too much. You need a heavy body acrylic paint and maybe let it sit longer. Now to finish the video.

Another thing you can do, on the ones with a lot of white space, use your brayer to add colorful inks and fill the space. After watching the whole video, I think your projects came out pretty good. Maybe not what you wanted, but I would be thrilled to get a card like that. Definitely get a heavy body paint and use about half of what you did here. It really doesn’t take very much paint on the size gel plate you are using. Looking forward to your next attempts.

I went back and rewatched Natasha’s video. She used a LOT of Perfect Pearls then brushed it off. I was thinking when I watched you that you weren’t using very much Perfect Pearls. Then she used very little paint. The Dina Wakely paint she used and Distress paint are very similar in consistency so I think the amount of paint makes a big difference. The first time I gel printed I used a lot of paint so the pulls were very gloopy and textured which was kind of cool but not at all what I’ve seen the experts do. 😂

Great video and great saves. I don't know why I'm so intimated by my gel plate and have never tried using acrylic paint on it. I love watching Natasha 's videos and she does some amazing things. Thank you for sharing this process with us. Might have to drag the paint out and give it a try (although I'm like you... looks like it could be quite messy!!😊)

It's weird that the distress paint was beading up on your gel plate like that. Does it have silicone or some other oily/slick additive in it? Great saves, though. I liked the grungy one the best too. TYSM for sharing!

Far too much runny paint. Not enough time burnishing the paper. Basically you are using the paint as glue to pick up the Perfect Pearls. You need the paint to be sticky and you need to give it time to transfer to the paper.

Ok, I *think* the beading paint was because u have to fill in *pores* of gel plate - from using it with paint. Distress paint is thin because it has no fillers in it and has lots of pigment. I’m pretty sure u were using way too much paint. Gel plate ppl I have watched like a heavy bodied paint. U might want to get something to use as a baren - like a big ole metal cafeteria serving spoon? I have a *real* one from I think speedball I got from Amazon and I think u need to press a bit harder. I don’t think paper weight would kill a project since artists do print pulls on display weight papers all the time; it may require better and more even pressure, hence the baren. I hate to say this out loud, but, really practice makes perfect. I have purchased some doctor exam room paper which is way cheap and highly recommended for practice to try getting better at this technique myself. It came in last week and I have been eyeballing it ever since trying to decide how best to practice as I want to use inks without the beading. Someone I watched recommended using with paints first and then inks. I’ll do it if u do it and show me videos of how u get on! I feel more confident now that I know those other ppl must have made mistakes when they started like u did here and I did when I tried it - the first, second, third, and fourth times! I threw my hands up after #4 because I didn’t feel like I got better but I still want to try again. Ooooo - maybe a live with you and a list of what u plan to try? I’m up for that for sure!! I can try and watch u, try too. I liked your outcome and your courage - TFS!

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I really do think the thicker paint would definitely help. I think I prefer my ink pads with the gel plate vs the paint honestly. It was all out of my comfort zone for sure but I will have to give it another go at some point. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it!

You made it work, I mostly use paint on my gel press, you probably need 5 or 6 drops of paint. I love them though! I'll be doing this soon.

I switched to cardstock almost immediately when I started using my gel press for the same reason as you. I don't want to have to mount my paper on a card panel after I've made the background so I only use thin paper to clean off my brayer. I've never been able to get perfect pearls to set with just misting them with water so I use them as water colors or use a fixative 'cause I hate having them come off on my hands. Way to save those backgrounds!

Yeah the rub off is the worst. I experience that a little bit with my nuvo shimmer powders too but it's not bad enough to stop me using those lol.

Great results! I would say not to use distress paint and you need a roll off sheet between brayering to remove excess paint.

Way too much paint. Only need a thin layer. Brayer off excess paint on a scrap piece of paper. A couple good ones 😊 The last card is very cool 🤩

I watch her videos, so I know one of the things she likes about the paints she uses is they have a smaller opening and they may be thicker. The light pink one she prayers off the paint twice, out of the shot. I had already liked her video, but yours made me take notice. The ideas are swirling.

Great saves!! Love the textures of the embossing folder. I love the ‘frustration’ of using my gel plate !! It really is a combination of correct products, amount of paint and drying times. Great vid, and i love that you shared it even though you had some "fails." The really came out great in the end! Here are my takes: 1. I don't like using Distress Paint on my Plates. They break up too much and I'd rather keep those paints for other projects. 2. You're using way too much paint. You want to be able to see your design underneath. 3. I prefer heavy body acrylics for my pulls. You certainly don't have to use it, but I prefer it. 4. You could try using a clear medium after you add the powder, and before you add your paint pick-up layer. Or, you can just pull the print with the clear medium. I hope that helps! I may need to give it a go.

hi Amy. Thanks for the video. I use my Gel plate often, usually with Distress Oxides but I know the paint you use can make a real difference. I did watch Natashia's video and I think you may have to use more pearls on your plate and way less paint. I always keep a piece of scrap paper beside to roll the excess off my brayer. Sometimes, if you let it dry for a minute or so, you will get a better print but again, that depends on what you are using. Good save though with your cards. I keep the cast offs and the leftover edges to die cut sentiments. xx
