Anyone who watches the channel will know our strike rate at fishing is, well, abysmal! Until last week that is when all the biggest tuna in the Med. seemed to make a bee line for Fair Isle.
Monster fish, but can we land one?
We are knocking off the sea miles West as well, this time sailing from Sardinia to Menorca with a wonderful two night passage.

Congratulations on the tuna; I share your joy. A few years ago, I purchased an ebook form Dick McClary, "Sailboat Fishing", that transformed my fishing succcess rate;I thoroughly recommend. On insurance, I couldn't evenget insurance for my transàtlantic and so sailed with just 3rd party. Even then, Pantaneous would only insure to themid way point; 50°W. But in the same policy, they insured for Caribbean and Western Atlantic, up to 50°W ! Your boat is far more valuable than mine so 3rd party is probably unacceptable? Best wishes for the crossing; I thoroughly enjoyed mine.I look forward to the possibility of meeting inthe caribbean.

The fishing rod is a big shock. Absorber the reel is just for storing the line. So lift the rod to pull the fish nearer and then reel the slack line onto the reel. Have the clutch on the real set so the fish if it's a big one can take line without snapping it. That's how you play a fish correctly. You've done one of the most difficult bits which is finding the right lure to catch the fish. Tight lines and fair winds

Regarding the hydro-generator -- we've had a Watt&Sea 600 for 8 years now and it's not been terribly great. When it works it makes a whiney noise, that goes up and down with the boat speed -- so every wave in big swell. It does make some amps, around half what they say it should. One propeller per crossing, give or take. I am getting it repaired & two of the new propellers, the improved ones are apparently better in not getting broken and are better in Sargasso weed, but more expensive. If you can, just get more solar.

Here are a couple suggestions: Our Yacht insurance for our crossing was Global Yacht coverage (broker John Strange). However I think he is a broker and reps for Great Lakes- They will not cover the USA. On the fishing side - it sounds like you left the drag of when reeling in the fish. Turn that off when you are reeling in and it will be easier. Also would say that rod and reel are to small. We fished on our crossing from the US to Lisbon and caught a 85 pound tuna and 55 pound Mahi Mahi- not to mention several smaller fish. Also suggest chatting with the fish lure people and they should tell you what is working now- that has helped us… Good luck

Interesting about those BougeRV panels: you gain in convenience and flexibility but you lose in efficiency.
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
They claim better efficiency and from what I’ve seen so far that is true. As I showed in the video they are good with partial shade and for the past week I’ve had the 200w CIGS panel on deck along with my big 400w fold out panel and it’s been giving almost as much power as that one which is very impressive. The other thing they claim is that it’s performance will not die off in a few years as other flexible panel tend to (my old one did) so I will keep an eye on that.
@WilliamAArnett
@WilliamAArnett Год назад
@@svfairisle The BougeRV panel comes in at 133 watts per square meter; a random SunPower panel I checked is 159 W/m^2. The diodes to help with shading do that but they lower the voltage of the panel and hence reduce its overall efficiency in ideal circumstances. Trade offs again :-(
@seacrusader
@seacrusader Год назад
Isn’t that the point. If you have panels that are in full sun then something like SunPower is ideal. However, in areas on deck the yield is higher because the panels are partially shaded most of the time? I will certainly consider changing our panels if Steve has a favourable report. Steve if you read this please make a diary note to update us in 12 months. Panels always look good when new, what is more important is a long term test.
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
@@seacrusader Yes agreed it’s the long term test that’s important and don’t worry I’m keeping notes! I’ve actually found out something interesting in the last few days. I’ve been scratching my head as we haven’t been getting the power I expected out of the ridged panels this year, it had dropped substantially and I though it could be down to general degradation (solid panel shouldn’t degrade quickly) But I’ve been having trouble with fuses, I replaced the glass in line ones that originally came with our first panels a couple of years ago as they were melting! I guessed the grub screw connectors weren’t up to scratch. I replaced with good quality 50A breakers but I noticed that if I clicked them off and back on now there wasn’t a decisive locking click. These seemed to be getting hot too and sometimes I could measure a voltage drop. So I’ve now replaced with a Megafuse box and magically my power from the panels has jumped right up! I think whatever was happening was messing with the MPPTs and putting them into float when the battery was not fully charged. Long term test on the bifacial panel is a thumbs up by the way. I thinking of changing by other two panels on the arch to bifacial in Gib if I can get hold of some.
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
Interesting, where did you get those figure can I ask? I’ve never seen them expressed as w per sq metre. Usually manufacturers quote percentage efficiency, Bourge quote 23% and Sunpowers top performing x22 panel is 22.8%, so that doesn’t match up with your figures.
@freakent
@freakent Год назад
Those solar panels looks interesting. I checked the dimensions but they seem quite large for the wattage they put out? 100w panels are almost as big as the 175w panels I have already.

Hi Steve and Judy. I love your videos and it's a shame to see you lose a big fish like that, what you need is a fish hook to get the bigger fish into the boat. Yeah a good whack with anything handy (winch handle, wooden club, crescent spanner, etc) is good enough, then cut the gills and drag them behind for a few minutes to bleed out. We have a 10’ ft piece of 6mm line with a loop in one end on the taffrail for the purpose. We also have an old towel handy on the deck to make it easier to control the fish whenever we have a lure out, along with gardening or fishing gloves hanging on the rail. Some people pour cheap alcohol (vodka, rum etc) into their gills to despatch them painlessly, but we’re not that squeamish and way too miserable to waste cheap alcohol in such a flagrant manner! 😢

I see you using the e-propulsion electric motor and alternatively a gas outboard. Why two outboards and how do you decide to use one vs the other? I would love to get by with just the electric motor but worry about its power against wind and waves. I’m bringing my yacht down from Finland along the west coast of Scotland and the Uk on the way to the Med. Is an electric outboard sufficient or are there time it wouldn’t work well. Thanks for the advice,
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
We only have the eProp. It’s been all we’ve needed in the Med. Yes there are a few ( very rare) occasions when getting the dinghy on the plane and getting somewhere quickly might have been nice but compared with the massive advantages of having a light, reliable motor there’s no doubt electric is the way to go. I do wonder if that will still be the case in remote Caribbean / South Pacific anchorages though. Will let you know
@syfeelingood
@syfeelingood Год назад
@@svfairisle Sounds like it's working fine for you. One last question... Since the battery and in fact the motor unit and tiller can be removed wit hteh base still clamped to the transome, how do you secure it when left at a dingy dock? In the Caribbean it would be gone in minutes!
@svfairisle
@svfairisle Год назад
We have a 2 metre long bit of plastic covered wire, sold as bike locks. It has loops on both ends, so we loop it through a dock ring or around a tree, then put it through the handle of the battery before locking it to the engine clamps that stop the engine being taken off the transom.

We now use a paravane (or diving board) with very simple spoon lures and seem to catch enough fish under way to get sick of them. The paravane gets the lure down 4-5 metres into the column which seems to be the secret. Off the tropical coasts of Australia, this mainly gets us mackerel, which are delicious. This is our fishing guru: dreamtimesail.blogspot.com/2022/08/how-we-catch-all-those-fish-on-our.html
@PaulBKal
@PaulBKal Год назад
We’ve also found we needed a much stronger rod and reel, with good quality mono line, around 40 or 50 lb breaking strain. The quality of the line matters more than the breaking strain. And the quality of your knots in the line really matters too, otherwise you will lose a lot of fish and a lot of gear if you aren’t tying strong knots that don’t unduly weaken the line. We find we can be a bit more selective about what fish we keep and almost never keep tuna, in favour of much nicer eating fish.
