Opened in 1982, the Glenn Jackson Bridge (I-205) over the Columbia River between Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA has one of the wildest bike lanes in the region right in the middle of it.
Seems to me like an example of function over form. Sure it isn't pretty but bridges are crazy expensive and those concrete barriers are more effective than you might think.
I’d love to see ODOT welcome the graffiti community to paint the barriers. Some color and public art would improve the dreadful gray experience. And great start to your video library!
Thanks Mike! I'd love to see ODOT do something like that too. I'll try to share that idea and see what the prospects are. And thanks for the encouraging words on the video!
No... Much better would be the allowing of native wildflowers to grow in the cracks of the concrete, and to look out and see the beautiful Mt. Hood and Columbia river. No human can do better than Mother Nature :) Especially when it comes to beauty
At least the two lanes placed together make it unlikely you will find someone riding straight towards you going the other way. Often on the Tillikum Crossing and other bridges where the lanes are separate, there’s someone who’s not riding on the right, and you have to make allowances, in addition to minding those on foot and scooters.
Don't forget to wear ear plugs crossing. I would be packing if I traveled south from the bridge and I would not travel alone. It's a shitshow of homeless camping on the trail.
