This video was reviewing the release version of the Motion Boom Plus. Anker released a number of firmware updates shortly after user feedback and it's now a good value speaker with much improved sound.
Having had the Boom Plus for just under a week now, I took it with me to friends and family houses as well as to work, generally those who heard it appeared to be blown away by its detail but also its presence, many could not believe that such a small package could produce such sound.
Totally agreed, You're one of the few who mentions the harsh treble. It's hard to use it as a indoor speaker for relax music listening. Even if you decrease the treble in the app, it's not a clean sound. I guess, the most people are focussed on the loudness and the deep bass. The JBL Extreme 3 is not loud and bassy as the Motion Plus, but better balanced and more musical. The Motion Boom Plus is excellent for partys and outdoor performance. I also was unhappy with the Motion Boom. Mids and Highs weren't clean. I think, this the Anker Soundsignature.
I really don't get it. Are other reviewers listening to a different speaker? Do I have a faulty copy? Am I too picky? I was looking forward to the release of this product but it's not as good as it should be.
I bought mine yesterday, and noticed, the soundcore signature default eq is different than what you show at the time of this video, so maybe they're listening. I was blown away by it, but yeah, noticed something a bit too shrill about the sound. I thought it was the bass which is omnipresent on this device. If you're into bass, this unit is amazing, but it also turns down nicely as well, but after your video, I agree, the trebles were too high. I used your eq, and it sounds awesome now.
From the various Original Motion Boom reviews and comparisons out there to date- especially factoring in price, overall sound quality, Portability...etc- the Motion Boom still shines through (there seems to be some magic in those full range drivers). Soundcore should capitalize on this with a Motion Boom 2 rendition, with slight upgrades (Aux in, Flash support, battery, BT version, hardware...etc) but retaining the general price range (
I feel like the one major thing that would help make the Motion Boom a $100 GOAT, would be to add 1 tweeter in the center of the speaker where the Anker logo is because there is a huge empty space there, right between the titanium drivers. Also, a 3.5mm jack would be nice too.
Thanks for the review. I have a 1970's Pioneer 990 receiver. I can guarantee that 1.0W CONTINUOUS is amazingly loud over floor speakers, but that's from a time when a watt was more of an "honest" watt... Modern wattage numbers seem to be smoke and mirrors, but one is dealing with solid state IC amps, not massive copper windings.
I get mine in a few days. Will compare it to my 2 Motion Booms and W-King W-10. My Motion Booms also have annoyingly harsh trebles. That's why I ordered this, hoping to be a more mellow and relaxed sound, all the while having a bigger soundstage. Apparently one step forward but one giant leap back!😆
I've added a more controlled audio recording of the speaker - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ckfKyT67H80.html - This is unlisted at the moment but feel free to take a listen. I'm afraid the problem is quite apparent.
It's considerably better controlled. The Plus sounds OK on some tracks and you think, "is it OK? Am I imagining this?" and then a bad track kicks in and you remember how rough it can sound!
As a musician I would love to hear your opinion on using this as a keyboard practice speaker. That's my intention, I currently use an IK multimedia iLoud speaker and find it lacks warmth and bass when used at high volumes. Also would like to know if there's any latency when using the aux in and if the EQ also works with the line input. Great review by the way.
I was thinking about getting this, however they went bigger and i just wanted the same as the smaller boom that i have but with tweeters and aux in, basically a updated motion boom, this is a larger party speaker and is too bassy and loud for my use case. I love your review and thoughts and hey your the first i saw who used the aux in so grats!
Tweeter harsh is still noticeable even adjusting the eq, and for being up to 45khz why the highest eq is just 13k? Even in a 5 band eq the highest is 16k and being until 20k
@@tdcattech but physically the twitter goes over the woofer in SPL terms, always 8ohm sounds more than 4ohm if they were put the twitter in 10 and woofer in 30 it would be a better combo (but more optimized if both were in 4 ohm)
And recently discovered in a teardown video woofer is 25 and tweeter 15 watts, not the 30 + 10 advertised, in other videos the watts are conveniently omitted in the print of transducers Also in other video comparison if you put this speaker full volume for some minutes it fatigues itself within minutes, sounding worse with time
Exactly! It’s like a marketing gimmick. Did they make this to play music for dolphins or what??? By the way, humans hearing range is 20hz to 20,000hz. But as we age, hearing above 17,000hz ish can be difficult. So yea, 40,000hz is 😂
I have 70KHz home speakers (Sony SS-B4ED towers). When set up correctly they do make a difference to the soundstage of the room. Most people may not be able to hear anything above 20KHz but if the audio is recorded correctly with the full range then those higher frequencies can make a difference. I guess it all depends on each persons hearing as I can actually hear 21KHz still and I'm 41 (up to around 25KHz I can't hear but my god does it give me a headache). I've compared Hi-RES 96/24 audio to normal CD audio and I can hear the difference a mile off.
@@MrAlex-lk8zn It depends on the recording/remastering. Some older music not so much as there is only so much detail that can be pulled from the original masters. I have some newer content and even some DTS 96/24 5.1 audio that is night and day from a standard CD recording. I also have a handful of SACDs in stereo that are so much better overall. I guess part of it is the higher bitrate but there is definitely a difference that you can "feel". A lot of people don't realise that music isn't just about what you can hear. The sounds may not be there but the air is still being moved across the frequency range and when set up correctly with good equipment and good source material some people (that are lucky to be able to perceive the differences like myself) can definitely tell the difference. I have done blind tests with 96/24 audio that I have down sampled to standard CD 44.1/16 and I can tell the difference every time.
I have had mine for about a year. My firmware is up to date (43). To me, it sounds plasticy and "shushy" with those tweeters. I also own the Motion 600 and Motion 300. Both actually sound better than the Boom Plus. The Boom Plus has those crap "hot" overbearing tweeters and twin passive radiators on it that makes it sound cheap and plasticy. I can't stand listening to it...would rather run the 300 or 600.
I've been into audio for 30+ years having work in the professional and home arena's. What Boom Plus offers for the price asked is truly remarkable IMHO.
@TDCatTech how would you rate this speaker right now after all the updates? I'm torn between this and tribit stormbox blast but the early reviews especially with people having passive radiators expand when using outside in sun makes this hard to buy
@Barry Caleini In the current time period now. Which speakers would u suggest between all of the Various Sound Core Speakers like: Sound Core Anker Rave Party Cast, Sound Core Anker Rave Neo 2, Sound Core Anker Rave Party 2, Sound Core Trance, Sound Core Rave, The Sound Core Motion Boom Plus and The Tribit Storm Box Blast? I sense you know your speakers! Between all of Them: When dealing with loudness, clarity, highs, mids, lows, deep bass, punchy bass, db, watts, battery life, etc.... Which out of all of them would you say has the most going for it as a speaker? And if you can name any other, that transcends, any of these; in those kind of price ranges- then I would like to hear your opinion. P.S.Any info would be greatly Appreciated!!!
You have 2 Choices. A Huge Speaker that Sounds Fantastic but is Impossible to Carry Around !!! Or a Small Speaker that is Portable, but Doesn't make the Ground Shake !!! So What's the Problem ???
Not at all. Audio is so subjective (hence why I over stress ‘in my opinion’ in the vid). Some people might love the sound. I’m sat here in my garden (sunny in the UK for a change) with the Motion Boom. 🤷🏻♂️
80watts peak 40watts RMS which is still good but if you want to measure it's true power then that will require special equipment. Honestly I'm looking for some bass.
Managed to get 112dB spl at one meter, louder than my home hi fi. Have run in my Boom plus for over 40 hours though, sounds best playing high quality jazz and 1980s reggae dub.
Agree with that statement the Boom Plus doesn't have the full rounded sound and deep bass of the og Boom and on top of that the tuning is kinda aggressive the music sounds too upfront like on your face type it lacks lower mids and also the deep bass so the sound is kinda lean.
(ALWAYS DROP DA BASS) lol. Anyway Anker is a terrible brand that takes advantage of the common folk. How you may ask, well for one, they run Kickstarters and raise an insane amount of money for “Hot Garbage“ that still takes time to deliver and is not of quality for the $Price$, and they don’t even need to use a kickstarter!! There already an established brand name people recognize!!, so it takes away from the true maker’s/developer’s out there who don’t just slap a sticker on OEM Alliexpress junk with 100X markup due to huge pallet orders and commercial’s “like “ this. Shame on you Anker… Shame.
I do like a lot of their stuff and most of it seems well made and reasonably priced. This, not so much. I would expect much, much better from a close to £200 speaker.
I agree. They market the drivers as ‘titanium’. In reality they are just cheap plastic. Also 30 watts of power would not be enough to power a speaker made with a metal cone
@@Splitscreen83 people who have no idea about what they are talking about in audio. For one the drivers ante not even metal, they are plastic, not the titanium the claim they are. I’m just getting started lol
Yeah, totally agreed with you that soundcore messed up the treble and the mids too for the speaker out of the box, but then again we have the EQ for now and I hope Soundcore could fix this with a firmwear update soon
@@tdcattech this speaker seemed made for: let’s put a lot of volume, more bass for deep and compensate with lots of trebles, resulting in total dis balance of sound, and gets worse when that eq flattens a lot with max volume and distorts like a boomy cheap speaker. It’s a no go for me
Firmware 00.36 is out now. I've updated and the audio is definitely better than the original out of box experience. I also use the Dolby Atmos Music option on my Galaxy S10e and find it helps the audio even more than playing with the speaker EQ settings.
If I'm correct, Soundcore lists the tweeters as being titanium drivers. Therefore, the higher frequencies are likely to be harsh until after some hours of use.
Harsh treble comes up again in comments and Amazon reviews. Also, comments say that the Motion Boom is warmer sounding and less harsh. Do you know if that's true?
I don’t understand why Anker Soundcore didn’t allow all their line to pair with each other? At least they could of allowed older versions to pair with each other and newer versions to pair. It looks like only the same exact model can pair with each other. So dumb.
Please give your Motion Boom Plus another go and do an update. Since your review, Soundcore has issued firmware updates that have resolved the harsh highs. And they have fixed the passive radiator problem too. This is now my favorite big speaker. I like it even more than my Tribit Stormbox Blast, which has a slightly bigger sound but lacks detail.
Mark I'm between this and the blast right now listen to mostly rock from 50s 60s 70s I'm 41 but still love legit good music f the new stuff lol besides billy strings and Marcus king lol but what stopped me from buying this is the reviews about the passive radiators.. the harsh treble and the bad battery life. Would use this mostly at the lake this summer amd don't wanna worry about that stuff but I've been a huge soundcore fan and Def lookin at this speaker. Any feedback be greatly appreciated. Also it's on sale today for 125 new
I own alot of boombox jbl 3 jbl2 monster blaster tribit stormblast and others my soundcore motion boom plus is still one of the best speakers ever shout out to soundcore love you guys
I've got the new Boom + and it's absolutely amazing for every genre of music. I listen to trance too and it's just impeccable. What made it an absolute zero brainer was the £127 introductory price.
Agreed. Maybe depends on what your listening to , what makes certain things stands out more. I got it a week later than most. So firmware update was waiting for me ). I’ve been playing it since, & haven’t heard any flaws, but no speaker will b the right 1 for everyone, But this one is perfect for me , for sure. 👍🔊
I have the Anker Soundcore 3, the MotionBoom, and the Soundcore Rave+ and I am realy disappointed that I cannot link any of them together!! Three different speakers, all for their own purpose...quiet a shame really.
Had choice between the Motion Boom Plus or a second Motion Boom…. And I’m happy I went with a second Motion Boom instead. The TWS feature is beautiful. I bet the Plus is great, but for the price difference… the original Boom really holds its own.
I have 2 of these and I also use 2 different models, I do not agree with what they say in terms of sound quality and satisfaction in order to hear the timbre of the music in terms of price and performance. I think you either have a hearing problem or because you flatter other brands.
This video is painfully harsh - I've had this speaker just over 2 weeks now and have had 0 issues, for the price/quality ratio. It's a bargain (anker usually do deals on their website - got mine for £100)
It's really good to remember that with age we can no longer hear above 15khz anyway. So it doesn't matter even if the device doesn't reproduce that area at all😁 Separate tweeters can improve the sound, but they can also ruin the whole in a bad case. As I understand it, the smaller model does not have separate tweeters
This was terrible at launch but has been improved in current firmware versions. Other Soundcore products are great. The Motion Boom (non plus variant) is a fantastic little speaker.
@@tdcattech I’ve never had a battery powered Bluetooth speaker need break in, but when I got M-audio studio monitors they needed tons of break in. I was very confused why my new pair didn’t sound good like the ones at my school until I learned about break in 😂.
So I kept it playing for 40ish hours. It helped with the harsh sounding tweeters, but honestly not as much as I hoped it would I,ll be returned it. For outdoor use it sounds amazing I do have to say but I would like a speaker with a little more play. Maybe the tribit stormbox blast? It looks promising.
Man, I swear it is just you and Mr Ross telling it like it is about this mess of a speaker so far. Have you heard about how the passive radiators stop flexing when it gets hot in the sun???? All the gushing youtube reviews with affiliate links kinda piss me off... At least they have been working on the frequency response through firmware.
TOO much bass - is STILL too much -- clouds the midrange - can't tell about the treble from over the waters here -- ahahahaha -- how does it do as compared to others -- better quality is much better than LOUDNESS -
I got a diamond boxx l3 and sound great but wanted something smaller with good sound and so far this has great reviews, and your splashing treble could be your phone I get mine next Wednesday and I'll do a review on it.
I had the Anker soundcore 3, the MotionBoom, and the Motion+ but ended up getting rid of them all in favor of a JBL Flip6 and a JBL Xtreme 3. I love that I can sync up the audio with partyboost on the JBL's and I could never do that with different Anker speakers.... only 2 of the same could be linked
I don't get other reviewers saying it's the next big thing. From the looks of it, it's way off the pace for that and needs fixes. You're only one of the few who loudly said treble is harsh. My Motion Boom even with default signature sounds quite nice and harshness is nowhere to be seen.
I love it over paying 379 for the xtreme 3 , for less sound , no microphone and less in app . For the $125 dollars , which is what I paid for my motion boom plus, I got a LOUD bargain. It is a bit harsh at louder volumes but with the app , you can fix it .
I’ve never tried any JBL speakers. I guess they have a good reputation. I suppose that reputation or brand carries them a long way and allows some degree of ‘over charging’ 🤷🏻♂️
My motion boom plus was screechy and hissy, when i play it when its still new,but i break-in my speakers always for hours, usually for new speakers you have to do the break-in,now my motion boom plus is broken-in the sound is great.
Hi, I'm fitness instructor & need a speaker for a local chuch hall for my classes of about 20 people. Do you think this would do the job or would you recommend something else? I'm looking to spend £150/200 Max. It will be dance music getting played through it! Thanks
That may be true but that should be an option. You can't assume that everyone will use this speaker outdoors at all times. Regardless, the firmware updates from Anker have largely solved this issue. It's always going to be a harsh sounding speaker but it's considerably more pleasurable to listen to with the latest firmware from July 2022.
Here’s a vid comparing the Boom with the Boom Plus - It’s not live yet but feel free to take a listen. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ckfKyT67H80.html
@tdcattech i know what u mean if u say harsh BUT ! .... Its an outdoor speaker a typical boombox. But its amazing what they have done. Standard settings are bullshit but if u do u own eq its great. Because outside u lose bass and treable and off axis most speaker lose all of their sound but the plus wins here if never hear such a great speaker off axis. Amazing Bass and treable. So for Home listening most of the time too heavy or u listening under 40 % vol. Then great. So for me best boombox of all time speacialy if u see the price!
Interesting viewpoint. This type of EQ may well work better outdoors and become more 'normalised' due to dulling etc. I'm not sure when I'll have a chance to test that but I'm sure going to try 👍🏻
"just received mine, it sounds 🎉 Awesome 💥 "The harshness this guy mentions is (false) "Very very impressive (Bass) beautiful acoustics I have it set to 3D stereo sound, L ❤️ ving it from the start! 👍🏻
Glad you like it 👍🏻 - The harshness I discuss is not false as it’s my opinion and is demonstrated fairly clearly here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ckfKyT67H80.html - Audio is massively subjective (which is a good thing) but I find the Motion Boom a considerably nicer listen.
The sound without the eq on the plus is only decent out of the box, but once you play with the eq I had no harshness and a nice full clear sound. Very good for the price.
@@tdcattech yes, watch alan ross channel on bluetooth speakers. boom plus has really bad 6hz peak! they basically pulled down the treble and mids and added more bass. lmao!! then on hot day? passive radiators swell up. good speaker but has had problems!!!
With some eqadjustments this things sounds better than every bt speaker I've owned. Especially for rock music from 50s 60s 70s. It has thump bit with those adjustments beautiful mids amd Hugh's. Prior bt speakers were Sony xb43 bose revolve+ jbl extreme 3 Harmon studio 4 and studio 7 Aiwa exos 3 and every w king speaker made. To say this thing sounds rough is goofy as help especially when considering the price of other speakers that don't even touch this for sound. Needless to say I think only thing touching this for sound will be the tribit stormbox blast
Check out this vid - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ckfKyT67H80.html - I did a more controlled recording a little later to try and more accurately demonstrate what I was hearing.
@@tdcattech appreciate that man ima check it out. Hey any chance you've gotten your hands on the tribit stormbox blast? Seen couple videos now on it and not sure what the heck to do. Order a 2nd boom plus for tws or order a blast and then return 1 other other and order a 2nd lol!!! Know o e guy says he liked the blast better but for music I listen to mostly rockfrom 50s 60s 70s I'm not sure which will be better!?!?!?@
Some people have reported that Anker support say they're working on a firmware upgrade that might resolve this problem. For the moment, I'm still on 0.29 and nothing has materialised yet. Then again, as usual, RU-vid is full of endless positive reviews so there are plenty of people who are going to buy this and probably won't even notice! I'm going to wait until the fix for another week and, if it's not forthcoming I have until 30th June to return.
@@tdcattech I’m going to do the exact same I have until the 5th of July , your eq has helped and thank you, I have 2 motion booms and they sound beautiful in TWS maybe not the loudest …. But certainly easier on the ear, as soon as I crank up the volume to 50% maybe less on the boom plus something goes Pete thong and screeches in my ears like an unruly child 🤣
Great Video! I bought the speaker anyways but it has not arrived yet so now I am wondering if you would rather 2 motion boom or 2 motion + or 1 motion boom and 1 motion +. Thanks! Other thing, I suppose that you updated the firmware when doing the test right? Great video
Great review. Considering you could get 2 motion booms for the price of one boom plus with the current sale on, do you think it's a wiser choice for keeping decent sound quality on the mids and highs while having the benefit of added volume by using two booms synched?
Based on what I’ve heard so far, 💯! Some people in the comments are talking about it potentially sounding better over time. I’m not personally a big believer in that (outside of the ability of the brain to becomes accustomed to a certain sound) but I will update this review if things improve.
I have found that with the right settings on the eq, you can get very balanced sound, base and treble very well formed. My phone music app also has an eq setting which can help as well. Overall is incredible for the price. I have an onyx studio that's very good, and at $385 Cdn...twice the cost, but yes it's very good. The onyx isn't good to take camping or kyaking tho... I'm very happy with this thing 100%
