My heart was broken, I loved my first hive, but due to the harsher than normal winter here in the PNW, my bees died. This video includes footage of the installation, Bur comb control, look inside the hive body as well as an explanation of what happened and footage of me harvesting the honey they left behind.
I learned a lot through this process and as we get ready to move out of the city into the county (cascade foothills) I will be getting more bees that are a little tougher to the cooler climate that I anticipate we will have. I’ll post an update in the future of how the new hive is faring.
I will be giving a jar of honey away to one lucky subscriber that leaves a comment on RU-vid sharing their favorite way to eat honey. This can be a tasty combination or a full on recipe! I will announce the winner on 3/31/2018.
Thank you for watching!

Sorry for your loss Olyas, I understand what you are feeling, I lost my hive too. This winter has been brutal for our gentle bees. As I am writing, it is still snowing in Western NY. Several bee keepers in my area have experienced losses this winter. Next winter, I will protect the hive with some kind of home made thermo-protection, that's for sure.

Thank you John! I never thought I’d take it close to heart, but my grandfather was a beekeeper all of his life back in Russia, so it’s probably somehow inherited . Or maybe hearing him talk about them the way he did. Yes this year has been a doozy! I’m going to do the exact same thing, place them in a less windy area because the windchill didn’t help the their temperatures , it created its own cooler microclimate in my backyard. I’m also going to research some thermo protection. Let me know if you find something that is effective and inexpensive. I am willing to build something for them if I need to.

Seems your first year, was 2017 summer? Did you beekeep 2018? We in Kirkland, lost 1 give 2017 of 2. Lost 4 of 4 Oct. 2018 to rampant varroae and yellow jackets. Curious how you did, of you did second year.
