I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

I hope horseback riding will be a part of this series! I remember you mentioning it at some point, that for whatever reason it wasn't possible to find a place that wanted to give you that experience and I was just flabbergasted, cause why the fuck not!? You just need a calm predictable horse! I'm sure there are blind horse people out there - right? 🤔
@Ohmni_potence
@Ohmni_potence Год назад
there are! theres a handful of well known ones, like Wren Blae Zimmerman, Nicki Watson, and Lissa Bachner, but because of liability theres definitely a shortage of trainers willing to teach it to the blind at a beginner level, or trainers that have horses they would trust to take care of a blind rider. Just have to find the right one! theres also plenty of therapeutic riding facilities all over the country that regularly teach the basics to people with varying levels of disability, those would probably be the best place for Molly to start, as theyre going to have the best resources and training to teach someone disabled, as well as have the best knowledge and horses to keep her safe. Generally their horses are better screened for temperament and trainability, trained more precisely, and the trainers at therapeutic facilities are more hands on, in place to catch or pull a rider safely in an emergency, versus a regular training facility that are generally more along the lines of standing in the center while the rider is off on their own.
@sngray11
@sngray11 Год назад
I have volunteered at multiple horseback riding faculties in different states that teach people how to ride horses with a myriad of different disabilities. Shame on whatever place wouldn’t allow Molly to go horseback riding! smh.
@Ohmni_potence
@Ohmni_potence Год назад
@@sngray11 I rode competitively for 20 years and I could definitely understand why certain trainers would turn the opportunity down, just based on not feeling equipped to teach a disabled rider, not even for lack of caring or wanting to be able to be adaptive, it’s often more of an “I don’t have a horse I would feel comfortable putting that person on right now”. But the best trainers I had always recommended other trainers or facilities that would be equipped to handle specific needs of a rider instead of just turning them away. Like I was a trainers assistant for a while and there was always a discussion about new students on whether they needed more help and whether we could provide that, or if there was a better horse if they were really hesitant or needed something different. It baffles me that a facility wouldn’t make those considerations and direct anyone interested to a more capable trainer for their level or with horses that would better suit their needs if they weren’t comfortable catering to their needs with the resources they have.

@MycThePoet
@MycThePoet Год назад
@@Upper_echelon_exotics great question! So it's just about which foot you put forward on your skateboard. Regular foot skates with their left foot in the front. Goofy skates with right foot in front. There are other stances too such as mongo which means you push the board with your front foot instead of your back foot. So with mongo your back foot never leaves the board. Mongo doesn't apply to surfing though.

He just went "Oh you're blind so it's obviously off the table for you"

I find videos like this so inspiring. Not from a "look, a disabled person doing something" inspiration porn kind of inspiration but in a "look at what anyone can do and learn when their needs are accommodated and specifically accommodated with input from the person needing the accommodation". I don't know if you're taking suggestions for this series, but as a horse person I think it would be so cool to see you riding a horse! I think you said in another video that you already know how to ride, but maybe if you could find another blind person who rides a different discipline than you teach you a completely different style of riding? I'm just really fascinated to see how a blind person would ride a horse!

I know that her life is much too busy right now to give 100%, but she could always start with the basics on a part time schedule. The bit about the need to finding things you can do when you are losing your sight really spoke to me. My mum is legally registered as partially sighted , at the moment she feels like she is between the blind world and the sighted world and as she lost her sight she lost so much of her independence and she got really down. Now 15 years into her sight loss 'journey' she is slowly finding more things she can do. She was learning keyboard before her sight deteriorated and she could no longer read the music, at first she gave up but now she is learning songs by ear using audiobooks created by the RNIB here in England and doing better for it. I started following your channel because it helps me understand the world my Mum is entering and it helps with that but I kept watching because your content is so engaging. Thanks for doing what you do and bringing us all along for the ride xx

Molly I LOVED this video!!! Pete and Nisha (and all of Pete's other friends) were incredible teachers. Also Molly you picked up both skateboarding and surfing SO QUICKLY!! I've tried to get the hang of them both over the years and definitely have had more success on the surfing than skating front but I was just so impressed with how quickly you picked things up because I know plenty of people (myself included) who it took many many surf/skating sessions until they were as good as you managed to be in one. Also I loved Pete's narration voices and the talks the two of you had about how surfing gives you the freedom to move uninhibited as a blind person. I can just tell this series is going to be amazing! (more stuff with Pete please!!!)

Thank you for expressing some of the blind experience, it's so important to share with people who are loosing sight as well as sighted people. We all have so much to learn from what you said here. Thank you for getting real and sharing ❤
