A Texas woman, Mari Ramos, recently tried attending a church service, only to be kicked out because she brought her service animal with her.
Jesus, we’re told, healed the blind. This church kicks them out.

On a video the other week some religious berk was talking about Atheists caring more about animal lives than human lives (there's not much evidence for this, but I will now provide a bit of ammunition for the fool). So, there's the old question of who would you save if they are drowning, the dog or the human? Well *of course I am going to save a dog* (especially if they're my dog, who would be part of my family) than a christian, muslim, etc, *and here is why:* dogs are loyal, they would try to save me from an awful situation, but what would a follower of the abrahamic faith do if, say, one was stuck in Hellfire? Why, worship and claim to love the god who arranged, it, and, worse, claim that such an atrocity is "just", of course! So sorry, religious people, but you can't claim to believe such utterly immoral guff, and not potentially face consequences, *in such a situation, you, my deluded friends, will be left to drown.*

The church members were concerned for the dog as they were going to have a loud music concert service with bright flashing lights. Loud music can cause stress and anxiety in a dog. Loud music can damage a dog's hearing and the lights may temporarily affect eyesight. If this were to happen the dog would be impared and not safe for Ramos. What Ramos could have done was go back later to work something out. There are calming hood for dogs and cats that help with covering the ears. People put these on their dogs for 4th of July. Maybe not go to the Loud musical concert but attend regular services. She could have tried and talked to the church board to see if something can be worked out and if not then maybe go to the media.

@@user-cx1pb4bf9jservice dogs are specifically trained to be able to go with their handlers wherever they go, they aren’t regular dogs. I find it very sad that just because she’s blind can only “go to a regular service”. What if she really wanted to worship and enjoy the concert? I’m sure it must feel really isolating, dehumanizing and discouraging to be told something like that, and I’m doubly sure Jesus would’ve gone with her to the news to complain. He had no problem speaking out against the religious abuse in his time, I hope the church can follow that example.

I have a sad story I think about often: I had a friend, a single man, who went to a local church on Christmas Eve. He got there early and sat near the front in a pew by himself. Gradually more and more people came. The usher kept moving him as 'families want to sit together' and he was taking up space in the pew. They moved him several times and finally had him sit way in the back on a folding chair. He felt so sad he just left. He often told me about this over the years. He committed suicide a few years ago. I e-mailed the church about all of this but (not surprisingly) received no reply. Churches are such awful places. Just awful.

As someone who has spent most of my adult life single, I can confirm that it’s routine, not just families with little kids but couples without kids, and staff on their behalf, to expect you to move from the good seat you paid for on the train or plane. You are expected to sit in some little table between the toilet doors in the restaurant even when it’s mostly empty, and to get served once any groups who came in after you are served. If you are a quiet, polite person you can expect to literally just get squeezed out of a booth in a cafe or pub when a group comes in and just fills the rest of it up.

As a service dog handler (and trainer) who used to be a full time missionary before leaving the church altogether, I can tell you this happens way more often than people think. The vast majority of cases never hit the news. In fact, it happens so often that it's generally recommended service dog handlers check with any new church they intend to visit beforehand to ensure both they and their service dog will be welcomed. Unfortunately, not all service dog handlers are even aware that they *can* be excluded from churches, much less that they should probably check in advance before showing up. I'm not putting the blame on Ramos here, this is just more of a PSA in general. Always check first, because a surprising number of churches say no. That said, you are right about a service dog's training. Every single service dog should be able to handle loud music and flashing lights without an issue. Service dogs are exposed to a huge variety of environments during training, and that exposure increases on a nearly daily basis even after they're considered fully trained. The reality is, you cannot expose a service dog in training to every single possible environment/challenge they may face while accompanying a human partner. It's impossible to predict, much less replicate, every possibility. Instead, we train these dogs to be what's often referred to as "bomb proof." This means we expose them to such a huge variety of environments that they take anything new in stride. These dogs learn to simply trust their handlers. If a service dog feels a bit uncertain in a situation, you'll see them glance up at their handler for guidance and then trust whatever cues they receive. On the flip side, handlers also learn to listen to and trust their service dogs, who can often pick up on medical related issues before the handler themself begins to notice. It's a beautiful partnership, but one that generally requires over 100 hours of public access training alone (that's on top of the time required for learning tasks, which is actually the easy part). The church in question showed just how clueless they were not just by suggesting that sound/lights would bother a fully trained service dog, but also by suggesting they weren't denying Ramos, just her dog. I've loved, lived with, and trained dogs most of my life. I never had anything like the bond I've experienced with my service dog. While off duty, my service dog is her own entity, doing her own thing, playing and relaxing as she desires. While working, however, my dog and I become one unit. We work and act together, in constant communication, showing constant trust both ways. Many - but not all - service dog handlers literally cannot safely go out without their canine partner. To say "I'm not denying you entry, just your dog" is a bunch of crap. If my service dog cannot go somewhere, it's impossible for me to go as well. We come as a unit. Churches need to get this through their heads.

I attended a concert at a small venue with some friends and friends of friends several years ago, and one of the new acquaintances had a Service dog with them. They took the dog outside at intermission to take care of business, and I'd forgotten the dog was there. It laid down under the table while each band played. Service Animals are highly trained to be calm and quiet in so many different situations. I agree that Ms. Ramos should have been able to make the call on whether her dog could calmly handle the music and flashing lights; I'll bet the dog would have had better manners than many of the people encountered that day.

Precisely. Service dogs are used to mitigate a huge variety of conditions, but all of them require loads of public access training to do the jobs they do. Even something the average pet owner would consider minor can be grounds for washing out (permanently removing) a service dog from training. One of the most common causes of service dog washouts is the simple inability to learn the "hurry up and wait" mentality all service dogs must have. If a dog can't completely chill out in any public setting, while simultaneously being alert and ready to jump into action at a moment's notice, they can't be a service dog. Service dogs also have to be willing to ignore other people, no matter what those people are doing. Things my dog has encountered while working: strangers barking/growling/making kissy noises at her, throwing food at her, trying to grab her from every angle imaginable, sneaking ahead of us to roll a ball directly in front of her as we passed the toy aisle, people telling their outdoor dogs to "sick 'em" as we walked past their home (just for laughs), children sneaking into the bathroom after us to peer over/under the stall at her while I tried to pee, unattended children grabbing her harness to prevent her from moving forward, more unattended children playing a game of "run up to the dog full speed, throw our hands in the air, scream loudly, and run away as if scared (then repeat)," and much much more. Nobody would think twice of the average dog reacting in some way to those events. My dog ignored every single one of them, remaining focused on me and on the task at hand (in most of those cases: helping me walk/stand without falling). If a dog couldn't handle a few flashing lights or some loud music, they wouldn't make it as a service dog. Simple as that.

My dog washed out of a therapy dog program. Not the same but it was still strict. Since he was very friendly I thought he might be a good candidate for a therapy dog to take around to nursing homes. He was doing great for awhile, snuggling with the residents under the therapy dog program director and my supervision. Then they brought out extra breakfast for the people who missed the first round. Look man, I work as a canine behaviorist and I know and teach the basics and advanced classes as well as train the public and other professionals. @@Ausgar-yc1yl You don’t have to be a peer certified behaviorist or trainer to train your dog. The more you know, the more you can accomplish with your dog. Training a service dog to s specific individual with specific needs as well as navigate traffic, remain calm and focused around noise and activity, other dogs, strangers, stop at intersections, alert to stairs and dangerous obstacles among a whole lot of other things takes a long time and a lot of knowledge, experience and practice to do right. On top of that you need to select the right dog some breeds are better suited generally and a certain temperament is necessary. Anyone can get their dog to do simple things relatively easily. Getting a dog to do intermediate tasks requires a bit more skill. Doing advanced stuff takes even more knowledge and skill. 2:52 Anyone see the clip of that dog at the Metallica concert? So look, I work in the dog behavior field. The only danger to that service dog in that environment would be hearing damage from excessive noise and prolonged exposure to excessive noise. A dog doesn’t have to be a service dog to tolerate an environment like that, either. A well trained, well socialized dog exposed to loud noises, activity, dancing, lights, etc… would likely tolerate that environment. In addition, a service dog is not the only one trained in that relationship, the “owner” is as well. Dogs give very clear signs of stress that a savvy dog owner can read. If the service dog became uncomfortable it would indicate that to the owner and the owner would remove the dog. It is a valid concern, yes, and all dogs are not going to be suited to that environment but taking their reasoning and claims as “true”, denying a blind woman with a legitimate service animal shows, at the very least, a very poor understanding of what a service animal is and does.
@nicked_fenyx

As a service dog trainer and handler myself, I could see the church giving the woman a polite heads up if their music is unusually loud. As you said, loud music can be a concern for the dog's safety, and many service dog handlers have earmuffs for their dogs that can be utilized in situations like this. But assuming a fully trained service dog - *any* service dog - would be unable to behave properly simply due to flashing lights / loud music shows how little that church knows about SD training. Service dogs encounter crazy, unexpected situations all the time. Music and lights are pretty low on the list of "odd things" a SD learns how to handle. Not to mention that even businesses that do fall under the ADA (which a church doesn't) have the right to kick out any misbehaving / out of control dog, no matter what type of training the owner claims. This church could have taken a similar approach of assuming the dog will adhere to its training, and if for some unlikely reason it didn't, sending someone to politely escort them from the building. Flat out denying entry from the start was pretty ridiculous.

@@nicked_fenyx Yes. I think people confuse legitimate service dogs with “emotional support animals” that are not conditioned or socialized like service dogs. There are people who buy harnesses with “service dog” written on it, throw those on a dog and then bring them out where the public sees the mess it is. In a side note, how many more people would show up to churches and how better would kids tolerate church if dogs were not just allowed, but encouraged ? “Come, bring your dog to church! God loves your dog, too!” Seems like a great strategy for attracting people. If there was a church down the street that did that, I’d probably go volunteer my time to do a class or something, run playgroups and hang out. I’m an atheist, but I’d support a church like that.

I have experienced both unequivocal welcome and also an off putting amount of resistance, to bringing my SD to church service. Yes, my dog is trained to do his job regardless of loud noises or lights or whatever. I bring him to theaters with no problem. If he’s going to be exposed to potentially damaging amounts of noise, I have ear muffs to protect him. Churches are within their rights to turn away service animals, but it’s an awful look. It’s literally the same as telling someone they can’t bring their cane or wheelchair inside. For places that must accept service animals, that also have a legit issue specific to the dog’s presence, they have to accommodate the service dog team by providing a separate waiting area, or entrance, or serve the team individually. Phobia of dogs is not a valid excuse, although it’s fine to explain and provide some compromise. Just be aware that the team doesn’t have to accommodate psychological issues. 😂 Most of us are cool with that, though. And our dogs are trained to “disappear” in line or in waiting rooms unless their trained tasks require otherwise.
@nicked_fenyx
@nicked_fenyx Месяц назад
Spot on. I would only add that there are some places covered by the ADA that can refuse entry to service dogs, but they are few and far between. This only applies in cases where the dog's presence would "fundamentally alter" the ability of the business to carry out its purpose. An example of this would be specific areas of a hospital that require extra sterilization procedures (hats/masks/booties for humans, etc). Also, any business has the right to kick out any misbehaving / out of control dog, regardless of what type of training the owner may claim. Obviously service dogs are trained to a standard where this shouldn't be needed, but it's still another example of a situation where businesses covered by the ADA can refuse to allow a dog to remain on their property. That said, the average person doesn't need to know any of this. There's a decent amount of nuance to service dog laws, but the general rule of thumb should be: if the general public is allowed somewhere, a service dog really should be, too. Churches are legally allowed to deny access, but like you said, it's the equivalent to denying someone their wheelchair, glasses, or cane. And it's a really awful look.

I used to think that it was the guide dog tell the owner when to cross a road, But that's not how it works. The dog is trained to be selectively disobedient, So if the owner signals he is about to walk the dog wil stay in place letting them know its not safe yet. I think they can handle a few lights and loud noise.
@nicked_fenyx
@nicked_fenyx Месяц назад
Fwiw, there are privately trained service dogs, as well as programs that train rescue dogs to become service dogs as well. Not all service dogs are specifically bred for the job, although there is less chance of washouts (failing training) among those who are. Also, service dogs can be trained to assist with a wide range of disabilities, not just blindness (they can be trained to help with mobility, medical alert, certain psychiatric disabilities, etc). Regardless, all of them are trained to insanely high standards. And as you said, "intelligent disobedience" is indeed part of that training. You don't want blind obedience in a service dog. You want a thinking partner, not a mindless servant. One cool example of this from my own experience came when my own service dog started performing a medical alert I had not trained her to perform. I have severe balance issues, to the point where I often appear drunk if trying to walk without my service dog's assistance. I also have episodes where I suddenly lose all sense of balance. My balance relies entirely on my vision, so whenever I approach the top of a stairway and the ground drops out in front of me, I get dizzy and have to stop, relying on my service dog to keep me upright. When I feel ready, I give her the cue to move forward and we make our way down the steps. At one point she began randomly (or so I thought) refusing to move forward down the steps on cue. I was baffled, as she'd never had an issue with this before. She would occasionally do this elsewhere as well, but mostly at the top of stairs (but not always - only sporadically). I began paying closer attention and soon realized that every time she did this, I inevitably had a total loss of balance within a few seconds. My dog was predicting my upcoming losses of balance, and knew it wasn't safe for this to happen in the middle of a staircase. Dogs can detect and respond to less than 1/10th of a millimeter of movement, so what she was doing was noticing me beginning to sway in such a slight manner that I couldn't yet feel it myself. My dog was utilizing her intelligence to disobey a command to move forward, because she knew it would be risky for me. Now, whenever I think I've recovered enough balance to move forward again, I simply ask her, "We good to go?" If we are, she starts moving. If not, she remains with paws planted firmly in place and we wait for the next episode to pass. A service dog's intelligent disobedience can and does save lives.

As the other said not all service dogs are special bred. I plan on getting a rescue for my brother. He would need it for half the same reason as she does. He also hates people and loves dogs, so having a canine companion for him is another reason I plan on training a service dog for one. I will have to be specific with the dog it can't be any dog to be trained to be one, but a rescue can. The 2 things it needs to be is a velcro dog and a people pleaser.

@@cryochick9044 Fwiw, the dog doesn't necessarily need to be a velcro dog. In fact, that can sometimes work against it, depending on the dog. It's often better to look for a more outgoing, sociable dog, then train it to focus on the handler while working. Either way, the most important traits to look for when evaluating potential candidates (aside from any size requirements) are: 1) intelligence (how quickly does the dog learn new things), and 2) confidence / "bomb proof-ness" (how easily does the dog startle). The first part can be evaluated by training a few simple tricks and learning what motivates the dog. The second is harder, but not too hard. You can bring a variety of objects, like an umbrella to open up in front of the dog to see if / how much it startles, or a wheelchair/crutches/etc for someone to use while you walk the dog nearby to see if it's nervous. You can also try to walk the dog over a variety of ground surfaces - concrete, grass, drain grating, sewer covers, laminated flooring, etc. A lot of dogs are surprisingly sensitive to different flooring, and overcoming that can be a bit of a challenge, so it's better to start with a dog that's confident from the beginning. Another tip is to ask if the shelter would allow you to take the dog to a variety of public areas, or to a pet friendly store, to see how it reacts to new things there. If there's a public agility course (or failing that, a playground) where you can walk the dog up/down/around new surfaces, that can help too. You'll also want to make sure the dog does not have high prey drive, as that's one of the most common reasons for washing out of training. Get the dog around cats if the shelter has those, get it outside around squirrels, or near some ferrets or hamsters at a pet store. If the dog hyperfocuses on small furries, it's not a great candidate. There are loads of resources and/or communities of experienced trainers online to help specifically with service dog training. I'm not sure how much experience you have, but it might be worth consulting an additional trainer for the initial evaluation and from time to time throughout the training process, too. Even as a trainer and someone who had worked with a variety of dogs my whole life, the first time I trained a service dog specifically, I learned a lot. It's not easy - I mean, you're training the absolute gold standard, the highest level, most difficult training a dog can receive, and then (in many cases) placing a person's life and safety in that dog's paws. Most dogs will wash out. Even the ones who start out as sterling candidates may not make it, and it can be both heartbreaking and frustrating (not to mention expensive) to start over from scratch with a new dog. But in the end it's definitely worth it for the person who needs a service dog to finally receive that aid. Best of luck to you and your brother as well.

If an entity is exempt from discrimination laws it is not public, and since it's not public it should NOT be receiving NO tax funding ❌

It is ridiculous when people who never work with service dog, they don't realise those dog are used to loud noises and bright lights. When I was at a Train station I saw a Service Dog and it behave great, especial when the train was coming.

This is as bad as Joely boy refusing refuge to storm victims. What a bunch of nasty haters. I hope you took your dog and yourself out for ice cream after that vicious insult to the both of you. I'm sorry that happened. Hopefully, you can find a place of worship where EVERYONE is welcome with open arms.

They let service dogs in my organization. Members have brought their dogs in with no one questioning it.Even a minister who was blind beought his dog on the stage! It was inspiring. She needs a new religious group more accepting of her and the dog.

They chose to turn someone away in order to keep up their stage performance. As someone brought up in a charismatic megachurch, I understand they need these gimmicks to evoke an emotional response from the audience. They’d describe it as “the Holy Spirit moving” though

One of those idiots tried to get me to participate by standing up out of my wheelchair. I told the pastor I wasn't going to participate in their little con games and I wasn't going to dupe anyone into believing I'd been magically healed by being touched and screamed at. I got quickly moved back to my seat.

Church might be covered by the ADA if it wasn't specifically exempt, it is not just "public" in terms publicly owned and operated, there is a section that covers private owned locations. The question is more whether it counts under "if the operations of such entities affect commerce". Given the holding of Wickard, I could manage to argue it is covered. they added this though to provide an exemption: "The provisions of this subchapter shall not apply to private clubs or establishments exempted from coverage under title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. 2000-a(e)) [42 U.S.C. 2000a et seq.] or to religious organizations or entities controlled by religious organizations, including places of worship."

I had a service dog for years and was occasionally challenged. I carried a copy of the law with me, let them read it, and if they didn't agree with the law I pulled out my cell phone and threatened to call the police. It worked every time.

Glad she spoke with the media, but they should have named the church. Attend a cult service and expect to get cult treatment.
