agreed - they seem to be pretty strong so as long as you don't do something stupid like the previous owner of this one did. I'd love to know how bad the damage was to the block if he ever pulled the heads off. Seems like worst case, throw on new heads and keep it rolling. the '91 i picked up needs a new head gasket but the motor never runs hot (at least in the
After installing a timing belt on a 3.0 Mitsubishi Montero sport I noticed that the timing belt was loose where you noted. My friend said wait,it is tight, then loose next time you shut it off. It's a normal condition is what we concluded, and it has ran well. I have had trouble keeping the balancer bolt tight
I had a Plymouth do that. I took the offending head to the machine shop to get planed flat, changed the head gasket, and away I went for another 50K miles.
That thing is toast! Pull the heads and see if the heads cracked and make sure the rings didn't stick to the piston if they got it that hot. I would assume the heads on the fwd 3.0 are probably the same so might could just throw some used heads on it if everything else is ok. If not get rid of the crappy Mitsubishi 3.0 and stick a 4.3 in it.
This is the vehicle I'm most excited about to see worked on, as you know dad had one similar to this with the 2.8L turbo diesel, and we got them over here in the UK, but by now most are rusted out, and the ones that aren't completely rotten are just too expensive. Most are also SWB. A diesel would be great, but at the least I'd install a reliable engine (you mentioned Chrysler) that's easy to service and potentially modify, if needed. Anyway, it'll be exciting to see what'll happen over time.
Can you replace it with a 3.0l from a Caravan? Mine has almost 300,000 miles on it. Just make sure to change the timing belt and water pump every 60,000 miles and you are good to go!
Depends on how much you like the truck, but pulling the heads and having them pressure tested and valve jobs done would be good as well as pulling the pistons and putting new rings on. Usually on 4x4's of that era you can take the oil pan out without lifting the engine so you could clean up the cylinder walls and pull pistons without removing the block. Should not be too terrible Ps hope you dont go diesel. I have seen some reliable ones but they run like garbage shooting out smoke and stinking up the air lol
My grandpa had a Caravan that he bought new with the Mitsu 3.0---dealer maintained, and blew a head gasket at 66K. My father had a Caravan with the same engine---blew a head gasket at 110K. Bought a junkyard engine to replace it, and it also had a blown head gasket, along with a rod knock. My experience has been that those engines are junk.
So dramatic. This is a Mitsu 3.0L V6. Clean/flush her out, new HG, stick a new Tbelt/WP kit with tensioner and pulleys, Tstat, perhaps a new rad (all for very little $ really)...and drive her another 100k mi. :)
Tyler, how did you move the 1990 Mitsubishi Montero from your backyard to your driveway? Did you push it out or drive it as it was running rough at the time? And if the heads are that bad and the engine is not that worth fixing, then find a JDM-spec 3.0L 6G72 V6 engine for it. It may not be the best option, but thought I'd give it a go.
I hate to say it but that is the ugliest engine compartment I've ever seen. I had a Mitsubishi once. It was a Mitsubishi Mirage also known as a Dodge Colt. It was a good little car. I drove the hell out of that thing until I moved up to my Honda Civic which is basically bulletproof...
