A Breath of Fresh Air: Trying Different Cabin Fans | SV Ramble On

We've had three Caframo Bora cabin fans for several years and we don't really like them. I will say that they always work and do move a lot of air, but they're so noisy we avoid using them. So we decided to buy a few different types of fans to install and try out. In this video we install a Caframo Sirocco II, a Hella Turbo and a Vetus ventilator fan.

We love our scirocco 2 fans. The switch goes out so I installed a toggle switch in its place on a couple of them.

Cool - no pun intended. Over in the South Bay in RWC. The prices of “marine” fans (at west marine) blew me away - again, no pun intended. One day I stopped at Walmart and they had Kenmore clip-on fans for sale and I picked one up for about $20. It’s, by far, the best fan on the boat. It clips on next to my head in the stateroom and blows to drive off any mosquitoes that find their way in (they desiccate quickly and die), and I’ve gotten used to it as “white noise”. It moves a lot of air. Only downside is they are 120 v.

Yep, you definitely pay a premium for anything 12 volt and especially if it's labeled for "marine" use.

Thank you for making such a good, informative video! Those are too hard to come by. We hadn't heard of you folks before, but we'll be back to watch more, I'm sure!

Thank you so much Rory, she's been a labor of love. The exterior was pretty rough when we bought her, but the interior was nearly in factory original condition. A true diamond in the rough. Thanks for watching.

Caframo fans are the best... only one you should ever buy unless you're wanting the old school metal blade and cage fans and they should be union pacific.. the small plastic white 2 blade no guard Carframo fans are the ones to get.. sailing vessel mig did a video on them

Thanks very much as I am setting up my wiring/cabling now and needing to add up the power consumption of everything = DECIDE on what to use!

Rich and Jeni, Really enjoy your videos and journey. In your opening exterior clip, shot looking forward, that fan in your companionway looks suspiciously like a 20" Freedom Fan. I have two on my trawler in Baja and they are wonderful. They draw about 3 amps at 12v (yes they are 12v) and have a variable speed control. Worth every penny. When are you heading south?
@svrambleon

Hi Bajatrawler - It is a great fan, really clears out the stuffy air inside when it's hot out! We are planning to head south later next year, but we've had a family issue come up so it's a little up in the air right now. Thanks so much for watching!

yeah the hellas are not my fav as well. Check out the Caframo ultimate fan. Can move 200 cfm on high and half the price of the soracco fan.

I think I would have installed the first one so you could open the port window and it would swing over it and blow the outside air in. If you switch the wires will it blow the other way?
@svrambleon
@svrambleon 6 лет назад
We thought of that, but it just wouldn't work in that location. There's an upper cabinet on the other side of the port and the fan prevented one of the doors from opening so we couldn't mount it over there. If we mounted the fan a little lower than where we did, the towel holder prevented it from laying all the way flat against the wall and it was really close to our faces when we were in the galley. The fan really does work great where it is. I used it this weekend when it was 95 degrees out and I just had to boil some eggs.

Hey, just the comparison I was looking for! I'm considering the Sirocco and the Hella Turbo (was considering the Bora, but after seeing this, it's out). I have a slide-in truck camper, and only need the application for the cabover bed area (queen bed takes up the whole area). It'll be mounted in the corner, so fold away would be nice, but not necessary. My main desire is that it is quiet, with just enough air movement to cover the bed. Also, it'll be mounted on a vertical wall, as there's no possibility to mount it on the ceiling... It appears the Hella would fit the purpose well, but would the Sirocco be the better choice for quiet air movement, and vertical mounting? (I purchased a Road Pro truck windshield defroster fan, but it is NOISY) I also need a low draw, as I don't have solar, and only one group 31 deep cycle battery. Thanks!

Thanks for watching SkepticalEd, and glad this video was helpful. If you have the head clearance, the oscillating feature of the Hella is nice for blowing around the cabin, but for noise and space-saving, my favorite is the Sirocco. It folds flat against the wall, and it's a bit quieter than the Hella Turbo. Good luck, and hope this helps.

SV Ramble On I ended up buying-and installing-the Sirocco. It’s SO versatile! Likely wouldn’t’ve even thought about it had I not seen your video. Thanks!

The real question is how much power do they draw ???
@svrambleon
@svrambleon 4 года назад
I vaguely recall checking them on the DC Ammeter, but they were a bit to the right of the decimal. Our average "not trying to conserve power" usage is approx. 150 Ah/day out of a 500 Ah LifePo battery bank w/3KW inverter. We don't start sweating the volts til around day 3.

How is the hella marine fan? I plan 2 units for a 5 meter by 4-meter hall. Will it do any good in ventilation?
@svrambleon
@svrambleon 4 года назад
The Hella is fine. We have it in our salon. It's pretty quiet and it doesn't rattle, but you really have to be close to it to feel the air movement. If we had a small space for a fan we would purchase the Hella over the Bora anyday. We just bought two more Sirocco II's to replace the rattly Boras we have in the V-berth.

@@svrambleon Face it, no 12V fan will blow an adequate breeze beyond about 2 feet - they are a joke and all are unreliable on a boat. The same is true of mushroom vents - they're useless gimmicks.
@Burritosarebetterthantacos

the engineering on the Hella is dumb as hell. They are sending anyone who can pass through engineering programs and it shows haha.
