As a boy of 18 in 2002, Turn on the bright lights was a real watershed moment in terms of a sound that would end up living with me for the rest of my life. Antics - for me, the most perfect album I've ever listened to. All in all, pound for pound, Interpol are the band of my life. Those first two albums especially will be played and listened to by me until my last days. Underrated? By the wider population? No doubt. But do I care? Not one bit. I always feel that the relationship between a true 'fan' and that of a band is very personal. I couldn't give a shit what someone else thinks of Interpol.

Their album ‘Our love to admire’ creates a viceral response for me because I listened to it a lot on my little usb mp3 player as a teenager just after my mum died, I love them but I exclusively listen to them in dark times because it takes me back to that moment and reminds me that, no matter bad things seem, it’ll never be as bad as was then.

NYC will forever be my favorite Interpol song and I think it’s criminally underappreciated. That song unlocks emotions within me I didn’t know I could feel and brings me to a place that I don’t want to leave. It makes me so emotional and it’s only 2 chords.

Quarantine really made me revisit Interpol, one of my favorite rock bands, and their amazing discography that I realized I still love to this day. They weren't in my all-time list but I feel now that they should be up there because I'm surprised that their stuff really holds up well, even the later releases (Marauder is fantastic imo!). I appreciate the non-Joy Div comparison. Nobody wants to admit it but I really think they sound more like A Thousand Leaves/Murray Street-era Sonic Youth than any other post-punk band they always get compared to.
@NFrk97
@NFrk97 6 лет назад
Honestly, the self-titled album was amazing in its own right. People tend to have a bad habit of overly comparing previous works to it. The the self-titled album was the most emotional of all of Interpol's work. The drastic shift in tone once you hit Always Malaise is insane, not to take away from the first half which is also very good. All I'm saying is that next time you listen to the album, don't think of their previous works. Just listen and *feel* the music.

I hated it so much on the beggining. But then, it grew more and more on me, and suddenly, I was in love with it. Although it's hard to rank, I find it their third best album, followed by OLTA and ElPintor

NirvanaFrk97 I completely agree. Perhaps because I’ve experienced that profound heartache that they portray in the self titled album with their lyrics and songs. My god, it gets to my soul and those songs give me chills. I have to say it’s my favorite album of theirs. I am so surprised that people don’t like it. I listen to it a few times a week.

Thank you for compiling this. Been a big fan of them since the early 2000s I was in that queens concert, my heart was beating in that crowd too :) I screamed my lungs off and called for Carlos' spirit when "The New" started. I agree with the comments about the 4th album, I remember setting the night free on the day of the release to focus on a fully dedicated listen session, I couldn't finish it, the reasons you mentioned came immediately but also the lack of dynamics, I recall getting hearing fatigue all too quickly. Looking forward to Marauder, a lot :)

That little moment after Zane Lowe asks whether they gave themselves time to rest and recuperate after the promo and touring for Antics is so telling. Our Love to Admire has a weariness and exhaustion about it that, in hindsight, seems to reflect four people who are running on fumes. That's not to say it isn't a good record - but from the off, it's the aural equivalent of having burned the midnight oil a few times too many.
