I really loved this presentation. A lesson from my online class brought me here. What an amazing way of delivering a ton of info within a short period of time without making the viewer bored. Excellent!
This was...almost brilliant. I've seen a lot of documentary film over the years, and this puts an entirely new, self-reflexive spin on it. Very entertaining.
I was working with Henry & Rel on Paranormal Activity 3 when they made this ....and they said the only way John would agree was to get Tom to narrate! AND then Tom said the only way he'd agree is if they drove down to where he lives which wasn't close....but they pulled it off.... just as a side project and man did they knock it outta the park.
The Style of this short documentary... displaying his supplies and personal items (Representing his humble nature and unique approach to art ) The heaviness of Tom Waits Voice adds a layer of wisdom and old school approach. John Baldessari multi-talented man and art icon (Fact: you enjoys and often visits Student art shows) It is refreshing to hear this.
I will not watch any more boring videos, I will not watch any more boring videos, I will not watch any more boring videos, I will not.....................
Tyler Hughes MAKE THIS A MEME. post it to your facebook. tweet it. if you're brave, post it on 4chan. honestly, the art world needs a better meme than that ruined Jesus fresco. John Baldessari would be a great replacement.
An iconoclast of the highest order. I remember well his proclamation about not making any more boring art. It was the topic of much conversation in art school. He closed the gap between art and artist. With Baldessari, his art became him and he became his art. Inseparable.
Two of MY FAVORITE artists and tricksters - TOM WAITS & JOHN BALDESSARI! thank you to MIRIAM (a past collaborator!) this is amazing and will be shown in every class i teach forever forward.
Keep at it! Don’t give up making art! Maybe! Just maybe some day! You’ll make “Art” & Dots aren’t boring? (Just as boring as watching the grass grow. ) I took sat on the toilet today. Number 2. C’mon ya know you did too! If you didn’t see a Doctor. Oh!, look the emperor’s new clothes! Can ya C it?!
i stopped, because youtube gives me no space. otoh, i have nothing personal against john baldessari-i dont even know him. i used to know his kid, who i really liked. but his work & the meaning behind it, & the behind all of the flatly rendered, terribly saleable postmodernism-was dreadful & despicable, especially considering who & what it displaced. when you understand half of what i said, then i will owe you more discussion. not now.

I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks. I will not say bullocks.
you owe it only to yrself to take a deep look at the history of all modern art [beginning in the mid-late 1800s] & then, after that, try to convince yrself that mr baldessari, there's, ouvre is of anywhere near equal value-or is, in fact, any "less boring" than, oh, say, the work of egon schiele or eva hesse or odilon redon or picabia or duchamp or klimt or chris burden or-obviously i could go on. i could fill maybe fifty pages w/ names. & thats just of modernists.
That painting at 2:15 reminds me of one that I painted an almost sold… But still have for sale that states "I escaped the opiate of the Internet to paint this" along with colorful, abstract s*i* :-)
I had to go back a couple of times on that one. It's a little trickily worded when read, but if you speak it aloud, it may make more sense. I interpret it to mean you can't force inspiration.
"You have to be possessed, which you can't will." I guess I came here 9 years ago to reply to a comment about this quote (the original post is now gone). And it is EXACTLY the same spot that resonated strongly today. Thanks, John. (and Josh)
I've been coming back to this video since first finding it in 2013 in design school. Thanks Ariel Schulman & Henry Joost for this wonderfully distinctive mini-doco. And thanks for it all, John. May your memory be a blessing.
But the most important thing about John Baldessari wasn't even mentioned. What are his origins? Italian I suspect. 1) because of his surname 2) because of his creativity 3) even his dog has an Italian name.
everything that can't be called exellent craftsmanship is called art if the creator of the piece wants it to be and an artist who calls himself artist cannot and should not be taken seriously, which is a big aspect of the art behind the art.twisting people into thinking that they have to pretend to understand and even like art to be accepted as intellectual when all they'd really need to to would be simply not understanding it and demanding higher standarts when it comes to craftsmenship.
I'm almost totally sure but possibly mistaken that he made some boring art. I could be mistaken but I doubt it for the most part so far. I haven't seen everything and I won't. You decide.
John Baldessari, YOU, YOU, YOU! YOU WERE THE BEST ARTIST EVER, IN THESE FUCKING EARTH, (it’s) (just) (because) (->) “ you were making ‘ART’ “ “ 🤣🤪😜😆 “ “ 😝😛😹😂 “ “ ! “
Baldessari did more than influence David Salle, Mike Kelley, Tony Ousler, Matt Mullican, Barbara Bloom et al., he was their teacher. People went to Cal Arts to study with him.
CHI ??? I am an ass - behind the mule - inverted here within - John Baldessari's ass - Here the mighty mule - art fully - pricelessly narrates - on the mighty Big John - Cream ate me too
