An abbreviated company history from when Rebecca Lukens brought the "Brandywine Iron Works" to a sound financial footing (1810-1847) through its evolution into one of the largest rolling mills built in the United States, Lukens Steel (still operated by Arcelor-Mittal today).

I was born and raised in Coatesville pa and still live here and am a proud employee of the Coatesville area school district. My Dad worked at the mill for 37 years and never had a sick day , god how the times have changed through the generations

Isaac Pennock, of West Marlborough Township, constructed America's first rolling and slitting mill, Federal Slitting Mill. He purchased the property in 1793, and in 1796, the first entry was made in the company ledger. This ledger is located in the Hagley Museum. Yes, the Federal Slitting Mill is the predecessor to his later mill in Coatesville which name was changed to the Lukens Steel Company. Rebecca and her husband Charles took over operation of the Coatesville Mill for her father, Isaac, in 1818. An original of the official Chester County Tri-Centennial Proclamation for West Marlborough Township, is hanging in the "Isaac Pennock House", our home, today. As a side note it is signed by a former Lukens' employee who became a Chester County Commissioner, Robert Thompson.

I have been to this town and because of the size of the town and the lack of people, I decided to research the town. I was amazed to read about luken's steel and understand why the town fell apart. I love the story starting with the Brandywine iron works.
