All true, but his death, and the others before him, did not do enough to warn Bolin, Moon and Bonham. Every addict believes his habit is under control until the supply dwindles. That's what made prescribed opioids so dangerous, a regulated amount dispensed on a regular basis. The drug scene of the 1970s was a grab bag of illegal this and that, including access to pharmaceuticals. It was coke, and to a similar extent heroin, that destroyed some of my favorite musicians, Kossoff among them (Was Backstreet Crawler even mentioned?). His wiki mentioned Mandrax, the European Quaalude, but he died from a pulmonary embolism on an airline flight. Paul should have been on a blood thinner, but most of us 20-somethings at that time did not see the need for regular checkups. Flying is notorious for embolism issues with the corresponding changes in air pressure. Would something like Warfarin saved him? A question with no answer, unfortunately.

I used to know Sandie Chard pretty well back in the early 1990's, when she lived in Houston, Texas. That was Kossoff's girlfriend while he was in Free. I knew her later, when she was married to my best friend's dad, Alvin Givins. She didn't like to talk much about Kossoff, I'm sure his overdose and what happened on the plane was still very much with her. She told me some very interesting stories about when she was hanging out with the Rolling Stones, and the Who, back in England in the late 60's... Those bands back then got into some hairy stuff that would not be acceptable today at all...She was a really nice lady. I hope her life since then has been well.

His father, David, wrote a couple of beautiful poems dedicated to much loved son. They can be found in a little collection he put together titled ‘You have a minute Lord’.

"Alright Now" opened the door to what would become the mainstream early/mid 70's blues-rock sound and the signature guitar riffs was a big part of making this happen.

An old friend used to work at Fillmore West & had gotten to meet all the performers back in the day. They would all gather in front of the stage & party before opening the doors. During one of these gatherings she said Paul practically begged her to accompany him on their first tour, but she declined because she was saving herself for marriage & knew she would lose her virginity if she went on the tour... I loved Kossoff's playin! I consider All Right Now to be America's #1 rock anthem of the early 70's. Thanks for your vid!

No mention of ' Back Street Crawller'? Great band, top album 'The band played on' with some top tracks. Paul Kossoff... more than .'All right now' 'My brother Jake' and 'Wishing well'. Check out 'Crawler'... ' Train song, Survivor, All the girls are crazy' and many more unmentioned in this short, short bio........👍🤘🏴‍☠️

I think, naturally enough, he was a sensitive guy, but Free breaking up, and the internal ructions that led to it destroyed his confidence and was at the heart of his problems. Paul Rodgers described him as "Mr Together" or words to that effect, before the band broke up.

I'm 71 now and on 19th March 1970 at Newcastle Mayfair i saw Free. I was no more than 4' from Paul Kossoff. His tone and bends and style of playing were unique and he made it look effortless. One of the support bands was called Raw Spirit and the Lead Guitarist was a mate of mine called Peter 'Tiny' Morrison (he was 6'5'').After the first session he shared a joint with Paul back stage and they played each other's Les Paul's ! Peter told me that Paul had complemented him on his playing and he always said that was the greatest acknowlegment he could ever have. ! Raw Spirit did a great version of 'Savoy Brown's' Louisiana Blues ! Great Day's.

When the video mentions their third album Fire and Water they show the cover of their second album Free instead. And no mention of the band he formed after leaving Free, Back Street Crawler. ps, I thought that Bad Company's song Shooting Star was about Kossoff but apparently it was written before his death. Even the song Wishing Well could have been written about him and his self destructive drug addiction.

I am 70 and look back with mixed emotions. Firstly with pride to say I had seen one of the best UK guitarists ever and with sadness to think that had it not been for his frailties I think he would have made more incredible music. It is never shown on tv (or anywhere) but I remember the night Bob Harris had Paul and Captain Beefheart on the Whistle Test, both were stoned out of their minds and you could see the unease in Bob Harris. Love to see the clip but probably now lost.

If I could just say, he wasn't struggling with drugs until Free split up. He loved the band so much, as has been said, it left a hole in his life that unfortunately he filled with drugs.

His drowning himself in Mandrax, the European version of Qualludes was a cop out. He had so much to give. He wasn't raised poor but why? Always, when thinking of Paul, Why? Great at Isle of Wight 1970 though you could sense a troubled soul but he could've put that into the guitar instead of a f897king dumb drug. Sad.
