Anthony Zee is a physicist, writer, and currently a professor at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics and the physics department of the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Professor Zee has authored or co-authored more than 200 scientific publications and several books. He has written on particle physics, condensed matter physics, anomalies in physics, random matrix theory, superconductivity, the quantum Hall effect, and other topics in theoretical physics and evolutionary biology, as well as their various interrelations.

Prof. Zee, thank you for the talk. I enjoyed your Fearful Symmetry in college three decades ago. Now I have started reading textbooks for seeing the equations, including your Nutshell books.

When I was a kid I used to watch OU lectures on TV for fun (I tended to wake up VERY early back then and that was pretty much the only thing running on TV in the small hours). These lectures remind me a bit of that.

Professor Zee, you remind me of one of my mathematics professors. He would stop mid-sentence to drink water or cough. But it would not stop the lesson. Please keep teaching us regardless and only apologise if you get things wrong.

Thank you for this. I’m grateful for achievable descriptions of GR that I can use with my students, and you have a lovely patient style. If I may: it’s worth noting that Laplace describes a mechanism for inverse square “action at a distance” as the resolution of a field potential in 1799, when Faraday was still in short pants.

I enjoyed the first few chapters of Dr. Zee's book, Einstein gravity in a nutshell. He is a very good educator, but the math requirements exceeded my tolerance after the first few chapters. I wish i had the background to fully appreciate what he was teaching! Best of luck dr zee!

I think Maxwell was not exactly "English". He was a famous Scottish scientist. Born and educated in Edinburgh before going to Cambridge University and then UCL in London where he made his far reaching discoveries of electromagnetic phenomena.

At about 2:45 you introduce a picture that shows some lines that all meet at left and right, as I can see the flow at left is from the INSIDE to the OUT SIDE, the right side flow goes from the OUT SIDE to the IN SIDE but the flow at the medle just goes in one direction which is to the right. - One thing have notice is that all systems ALL must to have a 2 way flow or UP and DOWN FLOW but as well may be seen as LEFT and RIGHT flow where the south side cant cross to the north and vice verse, the system s flow begans at the equator s system which divides north from south and counts with both charges so is the one that may give or take as needed by the system s sides, the north side flow starts at the center of the system at the equator UP and as it goes up it splits in 2 one to the left and one to the right doing a curve at both sides and this makes the flow to returne to the disk or equator but NEVER should cross to the bottom or the south side; the DOWN or south flow starts at the disk s center and as it goes down it does split in 2 one to the left and one to the right and both sides curve so returning the flow to the disk that must not for any reason cross to the north. The above description is found in the WATER MELON FRUIT if you cut it by half so you would get round slices, some are real clear some are not but if you have a good sight and imagination you will find it in all. There is a lote more in my channel just click the logo to see such flow may be seen even in DNA PICTURES. Thanx for the info Anthon, I like the way you explaine is very clear and not hard to follow.

General relativity is geometric interpretation of gravity. Inspired by Einstein's idea, geometric interpretation for other forces like for electromagnetism were also made. Read more on: Kaluza-Klein theory, Gauge theory, and Rainich-Misner-Wheeler theory.

Kaluza-Klein has been refuted since a long time ago, and "gauge theory" is a generic term for a laaaarge class of theories (including the standard model)

@@giannisniper96 I'm not much of a theorist here, i read about it somewhere thought to link it up. Electromagnetic F = kq1q2/(r^2) and Gravity F = Gm1m2/(r^2) share a similarity as in inverse square law. "So like Riemann tensor in relativity is the curvature of the Levi-Civita connection on the tangent bundle of spacetime. There is - gauge theory, and the electromagnetic field strength is the curvature of the gauge principal connection on a U(1)U(1)-principal bundle over spacetime." - stack

I have an electrical engineering and physics background. If my boss came to me with the following statement, I would have to give an answer: "Greg, we have a 100 pound box of weights that was left in space where the gravity strength is so low, the box is still where we left it in space 5 years ago. I need you to explain the difference - the exact physical nature - of how the 'conditions' of space out there allow that box to not move, while if we had left the box closer to a celestial body like Earth, the box would have experienced a gradient in its inertia and would have accelerated - without propellant - into the celestial body. Greg, just answer it - your job is on the line." If I came back and said "that's gravity" or "space is curved" he would say "that's conventional thought. I need you to explain why there is no gradient of inertia far out in space where that box is still sitting." I would say "Boss, you answered your own question. That box is still there, and did not accelerate, because there is no imbalance in inertia. Close to Earth, there is an imbalance - a gradient - of inertia and the box accelerates due to the imbalance.' .

I did not find action at a distance bizarre because of extensive and playful experience with magnets. I knew action at a distance was real in a visceral sense. I had held magnets in each hand and felt them repel and attract each other. How could I doubt action at a distance after that? I could feel the inverse square law in my hands.

Keppler was already aware (obviously) that bodies affected each other. He wrote the rules for it. He just accepted it was not for him to find the reason why. I think, he threw some vague ideas about magnetism around.

@Bob Trenwith Yes.... Thats literally what i said. That he was aware that they DO it. And over a large distance. Which is what the lecturer claims only for Newton. That he figured out the rules they do it by but that he didn't know why and accepted that. Newton started from Keplers how and answered mostly the why. But Kepler was already aware of the question.

2:02 - No, I didn't find it bizarre. I was very young and my thought processes were not sophisticated enough to question expert opinion. I took it for granted that the explanation was valid. I've come quite a ways since then, and there *are* some things I find questionable. But I just wasn't ready for such an action at that time.

The story of Hawking radiation wasn’t finished. So the particle-antiparticle pair was split up by the black hole .... violating the HUP? Energy was created from the vacuum but never paid back. How to explain that?

A perfectly rigid rod would be a SINGLE structure. Pushing one end moves the other end instantaneously and does NOT violate relativity because info cannot travel faster than C BETWEEN particles or structures. It says nothing about WITHIN a single structure. A perfectly rigid structure is a single structure with no speed limits WITHIN it. Interesting he quotes Eddington asking "how many pounds of light does a pound buy you?" As if we can weigh light. How true!

How does curvature explain gravity? In my view, you need to consider a repulsive force in the context of a differentially expanding universe, as well as spacetime curvature.

In the context of your question gravity affects/curves the spacetime through which the photon propagates. It doesn't affect the photon ditectly. From the photon's point of view it propagates in a straight line but through curved spacetime such that an observer sees it's path as curved. Even that explanation is somewhat clumsy.

One thing I've always wondered: If gravity is not a force but rather is the curving of spacetime, why does a rock fall when you let go of it? Seems like momentum should cause it to just sit there floating in the air.

About 58:00, Einstein's quote. Curvature causes you to have a preferred path through spacetime. Without curvature then everywhere would be the same, and you would be floating in mid air.

@2:36 Not quite. In school (c.1980's) we were taught here in New Zealand that Newton's law for gravity was just like a engineering tool, a mere formula, not a description of gravity. By my school age folks/teachers had absorbed Einstein's theory as part of collective culture, if not quite understanding how to use it practically.

@48:00 the embezzling scheme is not always practical. To skim off a penny usually costs more than a penny of effort! Same in QM, there is no way to profit from Heisenberg uncertainty, no free lunches. The key to QM forces is that the ability to embezzle energy is what allows energy to be exchanged - so still no free lunch, but we do get a break-even pay-off - free existence of physical forces.

So tell me the difference between 2 identical objects moving in the same directions in a rest frame and the same 2 objects moving in opposite directions in the rest frame. Other than the direction that is. One has no relative motion (v) between the objects. The other has (2v).

@Boodysaspie If it's infinitely rigid it cannot absorb energy. This means that if such a rock exists energy conservation is violated. Or better, such rock cannot exist cause of energy conservation

@@Ticklersoft (Edited for clarity) Good query friend..it would HAVE to move the other end instantly, but this doesn't HAVE to mean information moves THROUGH the rod as a result of physically moving one end...Since an infinitely rigid rod would be unable to vibrate, its structure would have to be made of something like the super compressed neutrons in a neutron star. information would not be transferred then right ?? Wrong?

Idk about you, but I, as an undergrad physics student who happens to be studying Relativity seriously for over a year, came to watch the video already knowing that I wasn't going to see a textbook presentation of the theory, but rather a kind of informal talk with many analogies present. This is what you should expect from a channel like this. And it's not that the channel lacks quality, it has to do with the audience... which would not get a thing otherwise.

Nice book, up until the end. The modern view is more nuanced. Weinberg: QFT is probably only an effective theory, reality is likely deeper than QFT. String theory is the only consistent theory of gravity and particle physics, yet string theory particle content is not the real world, but at least shows gravitons as string modes are gravity consistent with QM. Gauge/gravity duality is showing gravity is perhaps already quantized, so you do not need to quantize gravity, it is a theory of a bulk spacetime with QFT being a boundary holographic dual. Gravitons are just a holographic dual of bulk gravity, but which theory you consider more fundamental is arbitrary, you can have bulk gravity giving rise to effective gravitons asymptotically near the boundary, or a holographic dual theory mimicking a spacetime. Einstein was right AND quantum field theorists were right. It's the old blind men exploring an elephant story.

I do realize physics nerds will object saying that bulk gravity is string theory with gravitons. But that is just one model. We do not know a holographic CFT dual for a de Sitter spacetime. If we did, it is conceivable it could be Einstein gravity with non-trivial topology rather than strings. This is hard territory to research, but my conjecture would be that what we observe to be QFT is not a holographic dual of string theory in the bulk, but a dual to topologically non-trivial bulk gravity. How do we get extra dimensions in the bulk then? I hypothesise the answer is that a trivial topology with extra 4+N dimensions is only an approximation to 4D gravity with non-trivial topology. If you begin with exotic topology in 4D spacetime gravity, but then ask how to model this with just curved Minkowski spacetime, then I think you will find you need to add extra fictional dimensions to get the necessary degrees of freedom that your model trivializing the topology ignored. Witten should really be working on this, not on superstrings.

My boss says "Greg, when an electron and positron annihilate in a lab experiment, gamma rays are produced. Why can't we detect a gamma ray background, since quantum fluctuations are thought to be pervasive throughout the Vacuum?" He's my boss, I have to reply. "Boss, either the quantum fluctuations are purely mathematical ideas only and never attain physical existence, or there actually are no quantum fluctuations, OR there really are particle-antiparticle pairs throughout the Vacuum but they do not annihilate - they are persistent." He retorts "So you don't believe the claim 'electromagnetic waves do not need a medium to propagate?" .

Just a layman but I read that the warping of time is the main component of general relativity space warping contributes little effect. BTW Einstein had to learn the maths and his one time classmate and now professor of descriptive geometry Marcel Grossman taught him. At this time Einstein was professor of theoretical physics at his old university ETH still puzzling over gravity he couldn’t find a mathematics that treated all object equally ,a la Galileo. To his amazement Grossman said there was but it was arcane being differential geometry and tensor calculus ,Einstein beg him to teach him which he did and between them published a draft theory in early 1914 ,which as professor Zee points out, was wrong. If gravity IS the curvature of spacetime, WHY do you NEED gravitons??? You don't. I predict they'll never be observed experimentally. You're trying to fit gravity into the standard model when you posit a boson to explain it.

Time is a concept and space is a vacuum so how can you multiply space by time and get space time? the first thing you are taught in maths is that you cannot multiply apples x oranges, yet this is what Einstein did. he states that space is being warped, by what though, by the force of gravity. Gravity only works on objects with mass, so it cannot affect space as space is a vacuun and has no mass. All of the apparent affects of spacetime being warped can be explained by the properties of light, which can be affected by gravity, as light is a particle, which has mass, and so the path of light can be bent by gravity. Time is imutable, and the same everywhere, it is only the time it takes light to ravel between two points that makes time appear different, or to move at different rates.
