A Brilliant Gas Gauge "Fix" For This 1964 Plymouth Fury (And How To Diagnose A Bad Fuel Gauge)

This video is going live about twelve hours after Colin left for Plymouth in his 1964 Plymouth Fury. I know this will come as a shock, but he's already had some minor issues. But that's another story - today, I'm going to figure out how to fix his fuel gauge, so he'll have at least some vague idea of when he will run out of fuel over the course of his 6,000+ mile drive. To do this, we'll use a Power Probe to diagnose gauge circuit issues, and take another look at how these often-dead gauge circuits function.

A prayer for Colins trip .... oh Lord deliver him from the hands of every enemy and lurking foe, from robbers and wild beasts on his journey, and from all kinds of calamities that may come to and afflict him, and bestow blessing upon all his actions. Grant him grace, kindness, and mercy and in your eyes and in the eyes of all who behold him, and bestow a bountiful kindness upon him. And may his machine run steadfast and true throughout his travels. AMEN

Looking at that hollow steering wheel crossbar for 6K miles would literally 'drive' me insane. I say take and fashion from his favorite cereal box a cardboard piece that could pop into place where that cavernous well exists in your face, mile after mile. Have a great time Colin, nice vlog as always Jamie, there's no one else like you here and that makes you special. ❤ 🎉

Dude, seriously. Did you hear that he had more than that in floor installation footage?! Like, he filmed an entire 11 hour day for some reason, plus whatever else. It took an insane amount of time to chop that down to something watchable. I hope he learned something 😅

@DeadDodgeGarage I had no idea, but that's hilarious. I was joking because he tends to do much longer videos and figured a 6,000 mile road trip would be quite the saga. He's about to go full Peter Jackson and put out his version of Lord of the Rings. I'm here for it.

As a new subscriber, I certainly have enjoyed discovering/watching your older videos. Good job! As for driving with the burrito, I used to say "If you can't downshift a manual, while going around a corner, while sipping a beer, you shouldn't get a license!!" Of course this was when I was working in Florida, in the 1980's, when drinking a beer while driving was allowed. Times have changed. 😁

My classic Mopar fuel gauge broke a long time ago, I think I can call a 1984 Ram B350 a classic now. Previous owner got rid of the wiring harness to the fuel tank and I built a custom cluster with no fuel gauge so I use the trip odometer. I am pretty sure that Fury could make several 6,000 mile road trips.

If there's no physical damage to the guts of the clock, you can borrow my method. Remove Clock from housing exposing it's inner workings. Flush the inner workings liberally in brake clean. Allow to dry. Spray the inner workings with a light oil, WD-40 works fine. Clean the contact point on the automatic winder. Test. If there's no damage to the clock mechanism, chances are it's just gummed up. Clean it, oil it and 60% of the time, it will come back to life every time.

Ooh, almost first! Also my 66 Coronet does have a working fuel gauge. It mainly took a good used gauge, cleaning connections, a new instrument voltage regulator and better grounding. Like, everything. Now when I fill up, it reads full! And gas leaks everywhere. More new stuff needed, and modern lock rings suck. Oh yes, also resoldered the circuit board and gave it a dedicated ground wire.

@clembob8004

The "alternate" fuel gauge is cool - maybe "C' can stand for "Critical' and "H" can stand for "Happy". Now what would be equally cool is to use the fuel gauge for temp - "E" for "Excellent" and "F" for "FIRE!". About that cowl rust...maybe a temporary fix is some silicone on the outside to seal it up at least for awhile?
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 5 месяцев назад
Haha. Nice. Can’t access that from the outside unfortunately. The outer cowl / intake area will have to come off to access it correctly. It’s already been halfass patched together once before. Back in the 80s or something. I’m sure he will want to fix it right eventually.
@rennkafer13
@rennkafer13 5 месяцев назад
Now if you was being fancy, Jamie... you could have stuck a switch under the dash that toggled between sensor feeds to the gauge. Probably moot though since he has the aftermarket gauge set.

My first long ish trip in my 1984 B350 RV ended with a flat bed. Distributor broke, the springy retainer clip for the pickup coil broke into pieces. Lucky for me they don’t sell just the clip so I put in a remanufactured distributor,again. Lesson learned, Amazon distributors are not very good. Other lesson learned, falling off a flat bed truck and landing on your back and head hurts, and causes some injuries.

@DeadDodgeGarage

I always use the later 90s Magnum flex plate with the balancing weight. The one hole has to be oval’d to accomodate the offset bolt on the converter, but I’m fairly sure they are the same bolt circle otherwise. There was a larger circle used in some classic applications, but pretty sure 904 and later Magnum are the same.

All you would have had to have done was to go and ohm out the gas gauge under the dash if the little wire was broken it would have not have any resistance to it and you could have pulled the dash open the cluster to get to the little wire on the gauge and fixed it
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 5 месяцев назад
I am well aware of how an ohm meter works, but by using the 5v voltage input and the power probe to check for that input on the other side of the gauge, I have checked for and confirmed a break with the same tool I use to check the key power feed, the limiter feed, the circuit board traces, connections through the nuts to the gauges, and the integrity of the fuel sending unit circuit. Using that tool, I found and fixed four or five different small problems - which led me to the big one. I strongly suspect that when we get into the gauge, we will find it’s melted and horrible. But we’ll see. If it’s fixable, great. If not, it will be replaced - which was the plan from the jump.
