Who Speaks English in Latvia?
Join me as we walk the streets of Riga, in search of locals that speak English.
We pick a destination and ask the locals for directions to see how well they could respond.
The results will blow your mind away!
We head to Origo and as always mingle with the locals in the amazing city of Riga and ended up at a fantastic street market full of handmade Latvian goods.
If you enjoy adventure videos from the former Soviet Union and Central & Eastern Europe, then grab your vodka, some zakusky and join me as we meet the amazing people of Riga in Latvia
Thank you to all my Patreons for your support and helping make this channel what it is!

People, come to your senses. We have passed the. coronavirus, and now they are just laughing at us, and we are giving in and helping Ukraine that is empty that in which pours anger to ourselves and we kill ourselves, it is necessary to stop deliveries and all who are in Ukraine is a part of mercenaries who for money, money is normal, reminds as a bone of a dog. Let's live amicably, without ponts, without aggression. In Ukraine, many people are not ready to fight, some of them left, namely the well-off and who had time to take care of, and the state does not care, the place of what to conduct a world truce, and the deputies, namely the government pressures the people save pension savings and goes into other pockets, and you and I not to solve military problems, we should refuse military aid and money, because Zelensky is an actor, not a president, he does not feel sorry for people, and leads a game where everyone is tied and he will get money and those countries that are tied in this will get money, but the people will remain poor, as an example in Russia. If a person does not want war, he will be hated, why? Because history has been changed in America and people have changed their views, and no one is going to understand. Wouldn't it be better if there was no one left? We do not live in the Stone Age, but we are being led to improve technology and forget about humanity, and we with our silence and reasoning get rid of problems, where they pay a lot of money and solve these problems at the peace table (politicians and government). Namely, we refuse to live in peace, and signed up for it, and humanity will be reduced to find an easier way out to save on people and manage and provide pleasure for the rich and the lack of inconvenience in this is the war with Ukraine. And sons, grandchildren will ask you and you will say killed people. Aggression is necessary to make money for politicians, to lead fines for refusal to go to war with Ukrainians. Although many people have left Ukraine, namely the sensible ones. And about the war, they were prepared in advance to start a war with Russia, from the moment when the tanks were at the moment when people needed help, they thought that they should not communicate and refused peaceful dialog, in advance in Ukraine the president of Ukraine thought about provocation. It is difficult time to prove or explain to someone, if you do not understand that life is given to live peacefully and forget about the problems that you have invented yourself. Don't you want to live like this before, to travel, because it is possible to establish relations in terms of economy for poor people who do not have the opportunity to go abroad .I wish everyone health happiness and love.

Most young Latvians speak English fairly well because they spend 120% of their time on the internet. Almost all older Latvians speak Russian because it was compulsaoy in schools in the USSR. Latvians travel and work all over Europe so English is beneficial.

The one that is for everyone is English and the other one you get to choose between russian and german, but also a lot of people from other places live in latvia as exchange students, thru relashionships ect., so there are no worries to come to Latvia because you will definietly find someone how speaks other languages. I'm mostly good at written English, in real life I'd have a terrible accent and hard time to give directions just like that on the fly. I'm from the GenX, which means there was no real need for English throughout our primary Soviet era school, but then everything changed. Besides if I had to name my biggest influences in actually getting into English besides school, I'd say it's metal music since mid 1990s (White Zombie, Pantera, Sepultura, Clawfinger, Biohazard etc) and from mid 2000s it's the Internet - RU-vid and podcasts like "The Skeptics Guide to the Universe", "The Atheist Experience" and "The Radiolab".

But then again you must speak many tongues if you come from a small country with a tiny internal economy. If I try to speak German it interchanges randomly into Polish, although strangely, not the other way. All good fun though and like you obviously experience, even learning a little marks you out as someone worth more respect effort and consideration in the eyes of many. I remember walking into a Turkish store in San Francisco and being shocked at seeing boreks. I learned now that Poland has ponchik (Pączki). I am very impressed at how you have opened your arms to other countries and cultures. There is so much out there in this world and every country is its own universe. Your videos have given a view of these universes that mainstream outlets have barely shown. Truly a cosmopolitan person. I am sure someone in your travels has told you - the more languages you know the more you understand of the world. There's a lot of relativism in this world, and I also have been shocked at how things can be different elsewhere. For food, I have discovered like you, amazing combinations I would have never thought of with cultures far away having a similar palate as me.

@@J.E.E I know you are luleh kebab lover. If you haven't, try Persian luleh kebabs or more to your experience try kefta/kufta from Eastern Europe or Lebanon/Turkey/Armenia/Middle East that has the greens inside of the meat cooked. Sounds strange but instead of the parsely/cilantro outside, inside the meat is actually amazing. In the same region we got our own version of hamburger patties called Kotlet or Catlet which combines onion, potato and ground meat into patties. Actually I might be a bit cautious if some guy would approach me on street so abruptly and would start the conversation with : "Hello, young lady!" or something like that. I might pretend not to know english just to avoid a conversation (and I would try not to make an eye contact and move away) unless I'm sure from the first lines, that this person really is just looking for directions. But perhaps I just have had some bad experiences before.

Man par kaunu, es nerunāju brīvi angliski. Saprotu, lasu, rakstu +-, bet runāt nav viegli. Toties bez latviešu valodas labi protu krieviski, brīvi sarunājos lietuviski, protu norvēģu valodu (līdz ar to saprotu zviedru valodu un lasu dāniski). Video motivē mani uzlabot angļu sarunvalodas prasmi. Paldies Džastinam! P.S. Vēl ir dzīva vecā latviešu paaudze, kura bez latviešu valodas brīvi sazinās vāciski un krieviski, bet ne angliski

I visited Riga in April 2023 and I was very impressed by how well the Latvian people speak English. I was also impressed by how open, friendly and humble they are towards foreigners. But the biggest thing that impressed me was how safe Riga was at night to walk the street. I hope to return this Summer. 👍😊

@@antanassmetona4054 really? One thing i noticed though when i was in Estonia, was that some of the card readers text was in Swedish "Ta bort kortet" and i was very shocked. I even saw Swedish flags hanging on a street corner
@antanassmetona4054
@antanassmetona4054 9 месяцев назад
@@chapno4255 because Finns, Latvians and Estonians saw Swedes as actual good rulers, not some oppressors. It can especially be seen in Latvia. It was like a cultural golden age for them when Swedish empire ruled over them. If we’re not talking about historical background, Latvians just see the Swedes in a very positive light almost like a cousin/brother relationship, Latvia looks up to his “brother”. Baltics and Nordics being Northern European, hence all this friendliness - does play into account as well. Economically and politically, Latvia and even other Baltics have Sweden as one of their biggest economic partners (Swedish companies are everywhere, everyone’s using Swedbank, etc.). But as I said prior, it’s mostly the historical significance that Latvians cherish and loves swedes for. The “I occupy you but don’t kill you and actually treat you as equals” thing is very appreciated.
@chapno4255
@chapno4255 9 месяцев назад
@@antanassmetona4054 Thats nice, i know Finland has that "brother" relationship with Sweden and that many ethnic swedes have lived there for hundreds of years and still do, so a lot of swedish is spoken there. Everybody in Sweden knows that Finland and Sweden are "brothers"
@antanassmetona4054
@antanassmetona4054 9 месяцев назад
@@chapno4255 yeah, with latvian case it’s like half brothers you could say. So many things these two countries share that most people don’t know about.

I was surprised on my 1st trip to Belgrade Serbia several years ago that most young Serbians in Belgrade speak English. Most large cities with the young population speaks English, not much on the older generation. I asked a young sales person where she learned English, she stated that in Serbia, they have a choice to learn a 2nd language in elementary whether is English or Russian. She stated that the majority chose English, she asked me if she can practice her English and of course she practice in return I would practice Serbian. In Serbia, they use the Cyrillic and Roman alphabet, she also stated that not too many Americans travel to Eastern Europe. Most Americans prefer to travel to more crowded countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, we as Americans should travel to Eastern Europe, meaning any country east of Germany. The locals do like it when we try to speak their native language and try their local foods, looking forward to travel to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania next summer.
