I feel like Jason is the version of Christopher that followed his parents plans instead of rebelling like Christopher did. So when Lorelai gets with him and it blows up in their faces, it is showing that no matter what path Christopher and Lorelai chose they would never be end game.

yeah yet that's kinda of a big extrapolation since they are after all quite different individuals. it's hinted Jason was always kinda of awkward and Christopher was more of a golden child situation. So i wouldn't think it would have been exactly the same but i agree that Chris and Lorelai would have not worked in the end ..
Jason was a perfectly reasonable match for Lorelei and I think he would have been more popular if the show hadn’t already made it clear that Lorelai and Luke were working their way towards each other. If he’d come into the show earlier, he could have had a run more similar to Max Medina. We all knew he was temporary so we didn’t get invested.
Jason is my favorite of all the boyfriends. He is smart, adoring, witty, thoughtful, quirky, and driven. He loved Lorelai and wouldn’t ever try to change her.
I HATED what Richard did to Jason! It was HIS (Richard 's) decision to gamble his and Emily 's financial future on his business, and he completely did to Jason what Lloyd had threatened to do to him. And then, when Lorelai confronted him about it, he tried to shame her by saying he's not surprised she took Jason's side. 🤬
That was absolutely asshole move there,its really one of the subconscious things that Richard does that probably makes lorelai resent him as well as her mom,he thinks he’s doing the right thing business wise but seriously?
I've always loved Jason. he didn't let Lorelai walk all over him but he also treated her as an equal. they both dunked on the world they came from but understood how to navigate it. the way their relationship fell apart was silly and we never even got to see them be together for real. but of course we weren't meant to because god forbid Lorelai be with anyone but Luke.

It's so funny, Lane says that Mrs Kim said that she "doesn't trust unmarried women" at the beginning of the show, referring to Lorelei and Rory, but you never see Mrs Kim's husband ever and I don't recall them ever explaining why.
@emilysragz Taking into account that we never see or really hear about lane's dad. And she's saying this about Rory and lorelei, who at 1 point, was at least involved seriously with a man to me. That seems very weird to say that. And no one knows what you'll have been even looks like.
Jason was such a good challenge for Lorelei. All the others have been so reliable and always adapting to her, she never adapted ho anyone else. also., Lorelei works a lot too. She could have been very entertained for a long time wirh him. Luke seems so lovely but so boring and flat compared to her. Jason was the same kind of smart as her, and not a safe bet. I think she broke up with him because of her own reasons, nothing to do with the lawsuit, it was just an excuse to not be vulnerable in a relationship

It was ridiculous that she broke up with him over business with Richard. Excuse me, Richard screwed him over. If that had been done to Luke, Lorelai would totally be on Luke's side. But because Jason is an equal to Richard in the business world, he is wrong? He should just take it? She didn't want an equal partner. Same reason she crashed and burned with Christopher. Once he was stable and had money, no more attraction.
She wasn't that close to her father, they basically had no relationship besides father/daughter so why take up for him made no sense. Far as her and Luke they were boring , no chemistry.
I really liked seeing Jason in the revival. Seeing him okay after everything that happened to him in the series really made me happy. Lorelai and him come from the same upbringing, and they have the same instant defense to feeling emotions - humor. I also think Jason is neurodivergent (possibly autistic) and that helps me identify with him better as a character.

i love all the attention you give characters with less screen time--it makes the show feel richer. i think jasons a really great character for lorelai to be with (not in an endgame way but in a narrative way) because hes someone that lorelai has to learn to compromise for. lorelai is a very stubborn person and shes very skilled at getting her way with max, luke, and christopher. but with jason she has to learn to be a little more flexible, like their first date gone awry, the sleeping arrangements, and such.
You know, I haven't thought about that, but that's a good point. She does try to compromise when it comes to Jason, we don't see it as much in her other relationships. I like the fact that out of all the relationships, even she points out that he might be quirkier than she is. He's a different kind of challenge for her.

Honestly, Jason was too good for Lorelei. I’m currently on my something-hundredth rewatch of the series, and am at the beginning of this relationship once again. And Lorelei asks Jason to hide their relationship, and he says these things tend to come out because people slip up, and Lorelei in a line lacking so much self-awareness, essentially says she never slips up, despite the fact that she literally slipped up with her parents the previous episode with regards to Pennillyn Lot. Lorelei rebelled against her parents lifestyle, and Jason maliciously complied to his parents lifestyle. He does it better, he plays the games better, he remains his own person better. He has issues, but is self-aware of them and communicates them effectively with people around him or has methods to prevent them from causing issues to people around him. Lorelei is constantly making her inability to process her own issues and feelings the problem of EVERYONE around her. Jason deserves better.

Jason coming out as well as he did with those parents was the only unrealistic thing about his character lol.. not impossible but it would have been cool to understand more of how he managed to become a compassionate well adjusted person

He was my favourite of her boyfriends and felt like the perfect match for Lorelai...ambitious, quick, witty, handsome and outgoing, he was the blend of Christopher and Luke for me imo and I LOVE Luke, and am not mad Lorelai ended with him it just felt like she settled ngl
i always liked Jason and Lorelai but i agree that he liked her way more than she liked him. but that also happened with every relationship that wasn’t Luke (Max, Christopher) i liked that Jason seemed to have his own life/personality separate from Lorelai. all her other relationships seemed to revolve around her and whatever she wanted
I like how they did that as well; it's refreshing to have a love interest introduced that is not only a love interest. I like the fact that we get to meet Jason through his interactions with Richard and Emily first, he gets his own storyline that is separate from Lorelai's. I also feel like it gave this character so much more depth because we get to learn about his family and his life overall.

i just couldn’t get even a little invested in jason bc the luke and lorelai stuff hadn’t been resolved and it was so clearly a passing thing. i was kinda shocked by how long he was there for and how serious things got with him and lorelai
6:52 - I lost my grandfather when I was 12; it not only devastated me, but it made cemeteries this very heavy place for me for my entire adolescence. I'm probably projecting onto Jason here too, but as a sensitive type, I don't like to get into big emotional situations either if I can help it. Just going to my step sisters father's funeral I was sobbing. I didn't know the guy, and I barely knew my step sister. The emotional weight of the funeral just got to me. Jason absolutely has ptsd from the deaths he experienced as a child, but I also wonder if he's a sensing/empathic/sensitive type too and thats the other reason why he'd rather avoid such an emotionally-charged event.
Wow, thank you for sharing. I'm so sorry you went through that; it really is traumatizing. I like your theory on Jason, I'm inclined to think the same way. I also have trouble with big emotional situations. I always thought that made me a cold person, but I think the cause is that I might be sensitive. It would make sense for Jason to be a sensitive person; he just shuts down in these situations. Honestly, thank you for your take on this.
@@PensiveWhiskers Anytime! I love your take on these characters, and Jason is one of my favorite matches for Lorelei, barring Luke. He's such a neat, faceted character that Amy and her team wrote, and one of the few people who can keep up with her wit. He also seems to like Rory, and doesn't make a point to parent her, which was nice to see. Like so many of the secondary characters, they have these odd, fascinating quirks/ticks/trauma's that are so distinct and oddly charming. AMP and her team excel more at writing side characters than primary IMO, and I'm just happy to see someone giving Jason the love he deserves.
I like Jason! I think he, like Christopher, is a lot like Lorelai. Chris is like the teenage version of Lorelai, and Jason is like the Lorelai we know and love. I think if not for the lawsuit thing, and if not for the fact that Luke was obviously Lorelai's endgame, she and Digger could have grown together and played off each other well.
If there was no Luke I would have been over the moon for Lorelai to be with Jason. He was just so much fun to watch, major credit to actor cause he played him beautifully.

If there was a character that ASP hated more than jason I dont know who that is. I mean... he got COMPLETELY fked over by Richard. Lost his clients and reputation, he didn't just walking away from a few thousands of dlls. That's probably in the millions. Of course he had to counter lawsuit, and you just don't walk away from that to an entry job elsewhere. Jason really got the short end of stick there, writing wise. Not only that I think lorelai was unfair to him . Not understanding this and actually breaking up. Lol
I like Jason too. Lorelei and him have a past and a childhood in common, even if they were not related, but I see him almost like a cousin, almost as close as Christopher without having a kid with Lorelei. But unfortunately, you’re right, Jason doesn’t fit at all in Stars Hollow. It’s a pity because he is very sweet and I like the aspect very hard worker and going for what he really wants. He would make a fantastic friend. He also has a great sense of humor, like Lorelei, you’re right. I see him like a good partner for Lorelei in the suffering coming from the family, and both managed to succeed as adults in spite of the pain. Christopher is not exactly in the same situation, he didn’t really succeed like Lorelei or Jason. They have everything to fit in their relationship, but it’s not as romantic as with Luke. At least, once again you’re right, Lorelei doesn’t seem as invested as Jason. Jason may be in a depression without knowing it, it could explain his difficulty to sleep (lack of serotonin). He definitely needs some help and a long therapy. His dog is incredibly weird, I’m wondering if dogs trained like that actually exist in the real life?
Really nice video of Jason character. I was cravig for a video like this of him, because somehow no one touch his character at all. If they - Lorelai and Jason - would stick together, maybe a little one time on and off, then go back together with experiences and calmed down ect, they could be an amazing couple. They reminded me a bit of Chandler and Monica in Friends, where a bit mocking is love. They challenge eachother while positively supporting and caring. They were fun, flexible and just really made for eachother. They could grow more into adulthood with eachother, bc as i see, both of them a bit childish and almost everyone tried to change Lorelai. Jason a really underrated character. When i was young girl I was after Luke ofc, maybe sometimes Chris, i never liked Max really, just because he was not a good match with Lorelai, even he is a good man, just not for her. But everytime i rewatched the series i was like...yea Luke i liked you but you sometimes too unflex and too hothead, and never learn from anything. And here is Jason who is a much interesting character in any level. OFC i would understand a bit, that why Lorelai cant stay with him after jason and Richard had that business problem, and she needed to side with her family, BUT we all know, that Richard played dirty and the real Lorelai would not support his actions. She made a mistake there, but ofc we know they needed ended up somewhere bc the script said, that the one is Luke for her. Jason is a gold, every funny sentence, his humor, cleverness is soo refreshing. And ofc the dog...I love that scene. :D So thank you for this video!!

You make an interesting point about how Jason is flexible; I feel like the fandom tends to perceive Jason as inflexible because of all the quirks he has. The thing is, I think he's inflexible in the ways that Lorelai is inflexible sometimes so that's why they were fun to watch. He was flexible in the moments that mattered. Jason really was a fun character. I'm glad he made an appearance in the revival.

A tipic neurotic, he likes his things as they are, and a big point that HE KNOWS his flaws and quirks. He knows he has these things and he do not try to pretend that he is perfect or there is no problem. Lorelai and Jason, all the two are damaged from the trauma fo their family, how they were treated. Lorelai too much control but the same time never get the real attention, Jason i assume he was in a similar situation. Priviliged families with offsprings who they want them to be just as succesful as them. I was glad too that i saw him on the revival. I think his character off screen went to a good therapy, open up his fears and problems and worked on it. Thats why he went to the funeral, what, as u said in the video, was one of hiw flaw or quirk that he cannot go to funerals bc of trauma. Sadly some characters, even main or side, writed poorlyin the show bc of the sake of the plot. :( And sorry for my english, it is not my original language.
I've always seen Jason as basically Lorelai, if she were a guy whose life wasn't derailed by early parenthood. I've seen comparisons to Christopher, but Jason could not be more different in how cerebral and insightful he can be. I also always clocked him as on the spectrum, just like I lowkey read season 1 Lorelai as ADD (like Midge Maisel!) As for the lawsuit, Jason quite literally had no choice, in the sense that a kid at school can choose to give his lunch to a bully or choose to "peacefully" starve for lunch. I thought what Richard did was awful the first time I watched, but rewatching when I'm older and have experienced someone maliciously sabotaging my job, and having experienced homelessness, I do NOT play when it comes to money and work. Richard may be connected to our protagonists in this fictional setting, but he is certainly the villain in that moment. That was a Logan Roy move.
I think Jason and his father made amends in the end. I don't recall Jason having any siblings so he is the presumptive heir of his father's business/fortune; I would assume. I think his father just threatened him so it would scare him off about doing new business on his own and, after a while, he was allowed back into his father's company. Maybe by having a separated boutique company under his father's (like Richard); so he wouldn't have the same feelings he had while working for his dad in the past.

Every time I watch your videos, it makes me want to rewatch the show to get a new perspective. I never disliked Jason, but did see him as kind of snooty a few times. Honestly, a lot of the issues he discussed with Lorelei seemed reasonable and I felt like she made them a bigger deal than they were like not sleeping in the same bed. At least, he was honest with her. And as an introvert and a hard of hearing person myself, I did not mind him getting a quieter spot. My only fear of that is if it wasn’t someone like Jason and there were no witnesses, but off track. Now that you mention it, the lawsuit feels like a betrayal on both sides. I felt like Richard just broke off their partnership behind his back without a care in the world about who he was hurting. I can see why Lorelai was upset about it because she is starting to have a good relationship with her father and doesn’t need this to be a reason why they go back to square 1. Sometimes, I felt people were hard on this guy for no reason, up to the lawsuit.
I think some people stopped liking Jason because he showed up at the Dragonfly Inn in the season finale, trying to get Lorelai back. Which is fair, I think he was trying too hard in the finale. The actor is also on Malcom in the Middle and I think that those who watched Malcom in the Middle may have a less favorable perception of Jason because of the other character. I think that people may also be hard on him because he is seen as a hindrance to Lorelai and Luke. Also, I was very upset with Richard over the lawsuit. That plotline really revealed a dark side to Richard. I'll talk about it eventually (probably soon, I've been meaning to do it for a while).

I love Jason! He's the only thing I like about season 4. I wrote a fanfic about him ten years ago. It's my theory that he didn't panic and break up with Lorelai because he was no longer Floyd's heir. As the future CEO, any wife of Jason's would be like his mom, who maybe wasn't happy or as content as Emily, since she took Happy pills. Maybe quitting freed his potential partner from having to sacrifice her own life to be a corporate wife.
for the asking Lor out and that whole picked-on at camp thing... that is WAAAAAAY off re-watch that episode.. she mentioned how mad was at him for tipping their canoe and she was assuming he did because he was an idiot and didn't think about it.. but listen to his response.....she was always with Chris so he didn't have a chance with her. However, I do like Jason as the second choice only because he can banter with her wit perfectly
I’ve honestly always related to Jason. As someone who’s neurodivergent, I felt like how he acted was similar to me and honestly the only time I was like that’s not me is when he makes an off handed slightly homophobic joke. Besides that, literally everytime he’s on the screen I’m like, that’s me and it’s one of the reasons why I end up watching season 4 a lot cause I just relate to him…. …mind you I’m someone who grew up in a very loving household, I’ve just always felt like Jason was on the spectrum to an extent….
In some ways, Jason's character reminds me of someone I work with whose personality is just as awkward and by the book by professional standards. It makes me realize that the way I judge men sometimes definitely comes more from image than from substance, and if anything, Jason's character and personality is something that can either spark a lot of intrigue, or a lot of disappointment. my best friend went to 3 funerals over a weekend...2 of which were kids from unrelated sides of her families who were together and who died in a car crash...they were only teenagers
I really like Jason, of course wasn't sure we could trust him in the beginning. he seemed genuinely a good guy. I felt bad for him. He really wanted to prove his worth to Richard and Richard stabbed him in the back like that. Lorelai should have went with what was right but of course they wanted her ti end up with Luke. I wish they had of ended the relationship another way and showed Jason some real compassion and justice. I was no longer fond of Richard after what he did.
I, too, liked Jason, but he had to change a bit to end up with Lorelei in the end, if you take Luke out of the picture. He would have had to start a new career and put his effort and time into something else, but the fact that he was active and self sufficient and able to be in relationship if he worked less created a really lovable character in deed
I never understood the chemistry between Luke and Lorelai I watched the show because of the lives of the gilmores but Luke's and Lorelai's pairing never made sense to me.
The show does a great job convincing you that Jason is an interloper worming his way in to ruin the Gilmore family. The audience is meant to think Emily is right to distrust him. Then the twist is that no, Jason's the victim and Richard's the badguy.
I like how you put that. There is a symmetry to how Richard and Jason’s professional relationship started and how it ended. You’re absolutely right, Richard started off distrusting Jason but he was the one who ended up screwing Jason over.
I lost three people during one year once and it felt as if I had lost someone every single month. I couldn't imagine loosing that many family members much less 8-12.
I always liked Jason I didn't know most people didn't like him I will say I don't like his nickname but thsts because I have a Digger in my life and my Digger deserves that nickname a lot more he got it from working at a graveyard I think you can guess what his job was.

I like this character all the more after watching 'Kicking and Screaming' 1995. Similarly, he plays a glass half-full character. The writers for his TV character as Jason probably took notes from Noah Baumbach's characterization.
Hello there. Can anyone explain, please, what could have Jason gained with his lawsuit? Richard left the company to him, taking all the clients. As I understand, a client goes to a company voluntary, so it`s not like Jason can prove that Richard stole valuable assets from him. Or am I wrong?

I'm sorry you go through the same thing. 🥺 I think that people have become a lot more sympathetic on this issue since the show came out but not everybody. I had a recent experience where I had to share a room with a stranger for an extended period of time and I was experiencing insomnia. I was losing my mind.

I think he's probably very overstimulated easily, personally I loved Jason but I knew the moment he sued richard it was never gonna work. Richard was an ass and it was a horrible thing to do, but Lorelai choosing her relationship with her parents over Jason solidified that
About jason, I like lorelai and jason and richard. But I think lorelai was manipulative with how she ended things. She said it was because of her father. But as u said, it's more because she was still pining for luke. She calls her mother and father as if they are nazies, and she jokes about it. But when it comes to the end she defends her mother (with the vacation jason took their clients at the begining)and father with the lawsuit. She makes excuses, but the reasoning she left jason was more because she didn't want him, and less because of her father questionable moral behavior. Jason -just because jason was unhappy in his work rootine doesn't mean he was ready and able to move on to another job prospect. And after all the reasoning, he wasn't capable at that point to move on. So lorelai shouldn't have judged him for going after richard. But she herself wasn't truelly honest. Richard, as u said in the richard videos sees people as moneymakers. And he left hes morals aside when floyd went after his money. It was allways a possibility for him to get rid of jason. And when floyd struck, he did. He is a very careful man, so, it just saies more of his vicious nature how far he will take things just to get precisely his way. He is a killer. All the characters are kidding themselves in one way or another. But they all have their merits
I didn’t like Jason the first time I watched the show but he’s growing on me. Except I still don’t really like how he told Luke at the Dragonfly test run that he and Lorelai were still dating when Lorelai made it their breakup clear. But of course I could be biased because I like Luke better lol
I should have talked about Jason's decision to go to the Dragonfly Inn. That is by far the biggest criticism of Jason. I also think that how Jason was acting in the season finale was problematic. He shouldn't have shown up at the Inn like that. I still like him, but I can be disappointed with him sometimes. I kind of get exasperated with how long my recording is at the end so I end up leaving a lot of stuff out. 😅
Good point about Jason being over the line at the Dragonfly Inn. When you are so close that your mate has a key to your apartment and you dont speak for months-- its over. And Lorelai was clear about that... I saw it as sloppy screenwriting. AMP wanted Jason there, and couldnt find a better reason.

You're not alone, that was one of the common criticisms that I've found; many people feel that a part of the problem is that he is not conventionally attractive and that makes him less appealing as a love interest for Lorelai. I do wonder how this character would be perceived by the fandom if he was played by someone like John Hamm. I appreciate how kind your comment is even though we differ on opinions!
