Today we are making jam bars and blackberry jelly. I'm also trying to make some sweet gherkin pickles so we will see how those turn out. Also Andy is getting a lot of work done in the garden, we are having more trouble with voles as well as HOT and dry weather. As a licensed pesticide/herbicide professional (due to his business)Andy is also explaining some information on herbicides! We hope you enjoy today’s video!

Andy, I use red pepper to keep the squirrels out of my bird seed. I also used red pepper around the edges of my sunroom. That keeps the racoons for going under there. The red pepper does not bother birds. Try sprinkling red pepper on the row of sweet potatoes.

I can’t remember what channel I was watching and I’ve never tried it myself as I’ve never had voles BUT someone said they used some high frequency sound thing in the ground and it worked wonders. Now don’t hold me to it cause I’m being honest about not knowing for certain 😂but it may be worth a shot. They said they got it at Amazon and it wasn’t expensive. I just thought I’d share in case ya wanted to try. Yall work so hard I hate to see ya lose your sweet taders. Anywho…God bless you all. ~Lisa Ps. That was probably the best explanation of hay/straw I’ve ever heard anyone take time to give. I knew the difference having been around both all my life but I think it’s awesome that you’re willing to help folks. Also, I think that you’re being willing and BRAVE enough lol to speak on herbicides is awesome as well. 💜 I pray no one is hateful and gets sassy with ya!! 😉💜

It has never occurred to me that folks wouldn't know the difference between hay and straw, good for you to clarify. If I have to buy hay, it's for goats so weedy its fine. Real unlikely weedy hay has been sprayed. I battle voles every year, I dig their runs every time I see one trying to convince those deviled to go somewhere else, kind of like fire ants.

Absolutely not, situations like this are what give the farmers and herbicides a bad name, because IT IS the farmers responsibility to make sure what they’re spraying only hits the target plant, it is a big no no to spray on a windy day or even a hot day because the chemicals can either drift by wind or off gas on a hot day and move from one place to another. Hearing cases like this burns me up because people are so careless sometimes with what they are spraying and it makes it even tougher on us guys that are trying to do the RIGHT thing and be responsible, Paraguat is one that I don’t know much at all about except every time I’m in a class it always comes up and from my understanding it’s a fairly common chemical that gets misused

Ain’t much better than blackberry jelly!! Between the blueberry jam and the jelly, I’m set for the year with what I made. Very good explanation on the herbicides, Andy. There’s a BIG difference between awareness and hysteria! I see “herbicide drift” blamed for all kinds of problems in the garden, most of which have nothing to do with herbicide drift. Here again folks, don’t go crazy, I’m not advocating mass herbicide use, but I will say it gets a lot of unfounded blame.

I get a kick out of when they call food organic if it was truly organic it would have bug holes in it all kinds of stuff in it wouldn't look as nice and fresh as it does at the store when they say organic if you totally look at organic food and do a lot of research on it they spray The only good food you're getting is when you buy farm fresh not organic
@fionaworrell4535
@fionaworrell4535 3 месяца назад
They wouldn't necessarily be full of holes,there are lots of natural products,herbal mixes etc can be used to deter pests, on larger scales most vegetables grown for sale organically are kept under cover of bug nets or hightunnels. Then there's microbes that can be put in soil to stop certain bugs from breeding..and predatory insects can be brought in to manage any problems.

Your process of making pickles and jelly is very interesting to watch. You make it look so easy. Jam bars look good as dessert 😋 Maggie just steals the show standing there stirring and talking about it just telling us with a confident voice. She has so many skills at her young age!! Thanks for the explanation of hay/straw and herbicides. I feel much more informed. I don’t use sprays on my garden, but it’s good to understand the different types of herbicides. The hay spread around all the garden beds looks tedious, yet keeps out your weeds and holds moisture. Beautiful gardens.!! Blackberries looks so good like I could tase them!
