In this video I install a new kit to get the original factory air conditioner to back operational on my 1973 Chrysler Newport. The original RV2 compressor is being chucked and a modern Sanden type compressor installed. The system is also being converted to R134a. This retrofit will take away the horsepower robbing original compressor and allow ease of maintenance and repair with the modern refrigerant and parts.
This car is equipped with a 400 big block but these same principles and processes can be applied to most MoPar big block cars with factory A/C systems.
This video is long as it is the complete installation from start to finish. It has been edited to save some time, however. Use the chapters to skip ahead or go back to other parts of the video if needed.
It goes without saying... Follow any rules, regulations or laws in regard to servicing or repairing air conditioning systems.

Another success! It is so nice to see someone actually repair or upgrade a factory system instead of ripping the AC out and leaving it out. Now you can cruise in comfort during the hot Summer months!

Auto AC Solutions in Texas...that's who I'm working with on the '76 Valiant. Swapping in the factory stuff from a '75, but using the Sanden compressor & all under the hood. Very helpful crew

Fanrastic Video, congrats! Very helpful for making a decision if to proceed or rather "let it be". Waiting for a kit myself to appear on the market, bubt am reluctant to order from overseas only to find out it won't work out in the end. Keep up the good work! (Couldn't find the follow button)

Would't it have been easier to replace the original compresser? You are a skilled mechanic with good tools. not every one is.

If you could get a good quality rebuild or a rebuild kit but not really worth it honestly. R12 is hard to come by. Plus the rebuilds of these compressors are not good quality and routinely fail and the cost of the rebuilt original type compressor is almost as much as the entire system I put on this car. These rotary compressors also use alot less HP and can get parts off the shelf easy.

Iv got to refurbish my 72 buicks. Ive considered the sanden but im not sure if I want to or rebuild the a6. I need to get one of those crimp tools. Probably a video I will do soon my channel.

You might research about using the compressed air you buy at Walmart or an office supply store to use to charge your A/C in your car. I have seen it done but I have not done it myself. You might save a few $$$ using the canned air.

Great Job you saved yourself quite a bit of money. How much did you pay for the high pressure hose clamp kit ?
@ObsoleteAutomotive

The entire kit was about $850 with shipping and tax.

Do you have a video on the Fury? My dad had one from 69 as the second owner until it rusted too bad in 2011. I still have the 383 from it.

Never put oil on bolt threads. It will make sure that they come loose before you want them to. Hopefully this won't happen to you but I would not be surprised if it did

Is this compressor "better" than original?
@ObsoleteAutomotive
@ObsoleteAutomotive Месяц назад
Yes. Uses less power and is more efficient. Plus parts are cheaper and easily available.

How did the system get oil in it?
@ObsoleteAutomotive
@ObsoleteAutomotive 11 месяцев назад
The compressor has the necessary oil in it.
@auteurfiddler8706
@auteurfiddler8706 11 месяцев назад
@@ObsoleteAutomotive I always thought it (oil) came in cans with refrigerant and that r12 uses one type of oil and R134a another. I never understood if the oil sits in a reservoir in the compressor, or circulates in the refrigerant. I have been reading that R290, refrigerant grade propane, is good and a mixture of propane and a dash of isobutane is best for R12 systems. No need to change hoses.
@ObsoleteAutomotive
@ObsoleteAutomotive 11 месяцев назад
@@auteurfiddler8706 You can’t mix R12 and R134a or their oils. The various system components are different. That’s why I replaced all the R12 specific pieces and flushed everything to make sure it was clear of any contaminants. The oil circulates through the A/C system.

I suspect it wouldn't with the weight lol. They're very hard to come across in Dallas. I can also drive to pick it up. I'm up to travel. Was the retrofit worth it? Is it really cold?
@ObsoleteAutomotive
@ObsoleteAutomotive Месяц назад
@@donameci7 The retrofit was worth it. The reman original compressors don’t last and r12 isn’t readily available. Finding parts to repair the RV2 isn’t necessarily easy or cheap either. The newer compressor also doesn’t take as much HP to turn and much easier to get parts for should they be needed. The temperature seemed to be about the same as the original system when it was still working.
