Witch Bolt, Crown of Madness, True Strike
These three spells are often maligned as the worst 3 spells in D&D 5e. That they are basically useless, maybe for the players they are but a GM can build some interesting encounters with them.

Witch bolt is my favourite minion spell . Garunteed damage is pretty scary, so a group of cultists spamming witch bolt at the players whilst the big bad fights them creates interesting situations. One of your cultists is bound to hit, and now you have a constant stream of incoming damage that you need to deal with. It's not a top tier threat, but its spicy, making low tier Spellcaster minions pretty scary. Its one of those things where players will disniss the minions as not being a threat until its suddenly a big deal, as the cultusts who missed the start casting defensive buffs on the ones who did, and prevent the players from moving out of range.

My problem with those spells is that they're so bad that you have to overcompensate for how terrible they are if you still want an encounter to be balanced. For example, a group of bandits that fight normally are much more threatening than that same group of bandits, if they use true strike between each attack. (especially if you use flanking rules) So if I wanted to use those kind of bandits, I'd probably need to increase the number of enemies to compensate if I wanted the fight to still be challenging. Even in the situations where I want an effect that's similar, I'm much more likely to just homebrew something that's similar but actually decent, rather than have them use terribad spells.

Its a neat gimmick to pull in 'standoff' situations, like you're in hostile negotiations and the enemy casts true strike on you like a shot over the bow of a ship.

The biggest problem with True Strike for me is that most valid uses of it just... aren't a problem for a naturally spellcasting character. Imagine you've got an ogre or some other large melee beatstick monster. Say it's out of melee of its target and doesn't want to dash in to hand over free flanking to his opponent. Casting True Strike in this situation would be valid if you're looking to spend your action offensively without getting out of position... but true strike is a spell and therefor not a good fit for these creatures. Any creature that casts spells has a better option than True Strike at range.

In 3rd ed true strike was a +20 to hit and ignored concealment. It was a guarantied hit, so you would use it for your important spell attacks like disintegrate, or when using called shot rules one could shoot an acid arrow at important gear the enemy possessed.

I got a noob wizard in my party that took witch bolt and I tried to warn her, now we're level 4 and she's basically never used it since she got the chromatic orb... It's a spell that escalates awesomely though, a level 5 witch bolt is amazing as a stored spell in a ring
@carsonm7292
@carsonm7292 2 месяца назад
Witch Bolt's damage on subsequent turns doesn't scale with spell level. Witch bolt cast at 5th level does 5d12 up front and 1d12 on subsequent turns. That's an average of 32.5 damage up front and 6.5 on subsequent turns. Fireball cast at the same level does an average of 35 damage instantly...to everything that fails its saving throw in a 20 ft. radius sphere, and half as much to those that succeed. It really is just bad unfortunately. A spell storing ring is better filled with auxiliary castings of Shield, Silvery Barbs, Absorb Elements, and similar staple defensive spells in my opinion.

Also, True Strike is decent for or against charging cavalry-like enemies. In those scenarios, you might only get one attack in before the dragon swoops away. Or, you are running past a giant ogre and can only get one hit in. Yes, it's almost always better to hit twice, but unless your sword is literally 30 feet long, you might not be physically able to.

This was a good point, as a Dm, you want to create challenges not TPK's. While this can occasionally happen, it's important to limit your combats to meaningful encounters. These spells, with their flaws, allow players to think of ways to counter them and gives them a sense of satisfaction when they succeed. In a worse case scenario, they learn how to use said spell more effectively by learning how their nemesis, [DM], used it to beat or hurt them.

How id improve these spells: True Strike: instead of getting advantage on the attack it is instead a guarenteed automatic hit. That way if you have one slot left for a really good spell that you NEED to hit then this will guarentee it. Changes it from an okay spell to a decent one. Crown of Madness: have the target move to the closest creature then make their attack. Baldurs Gate 3 did this and it makes it so much more worth while. Witch Bolt: i'll admit this one is tricky but i think the best idea ive had is that instead of increasing the initial damage when upcast instead you can target an additional creature per spell slot. This, in my mind, makes the limitations of the spell somewhat more reasonable. You could also increase the range of the spell too but if we're making just one simple change then multiple targets is my answer

I saw an *AWESOME* interpretation of Witch Bolt recently that *tethers* the target and the caster and forces them to stay within 30 feet of each other. It deliberately leaves how to break this condition kinda vague besides LoS, some official wording on how to break it would be nice, but I like the concept that either A: it just DOES NOT break unless the bolt is interrupted, and/or B: It doesn't break unless you leave the area by *forced* movement. Otherwise you have go in and punch the shit out of them, either way it *forces* a "FACE ME" lockdown situation so long as the caster holds concentration. Your friends can go in and shove you out (anyone can do this!) or try to pummel the caster, making it an awesome GM tool but it also has some crazy player interactions too. Imagine you're falling off a cliff and YOU WITCH BOLT SOMEONE to (depending on how the GM rules it) either save yourself from falling OR drag them down with you. Or maybe it works both ways and you could save a friend who's falling! Can they endure the brutal charge of a lightning bolt long enough to be rescued? Do you risk the death saving throw fails to save their life from certain doom? Can you hold witch bolt on a flying target to keep them from flying away? *Can you tether yourself to a blue or bronze dragon to stay on its back no matter how fast it flies?* I absolutely love the way it recontextualizes that spell by turning the constant beam into something with movement control properties no matter how you rule it.

Crown of Madness has a very powerful and unintuitive application: it's the "fuck you, wizard" spell. Cast it on the enemy spellcaster and have your paladin or other tank stand in front of them. That spellcaster must now use their action to do a wimpy melee attack on your paladin every turn until they escape the spell. If you're a sorcerer you can maintain it while using Quicken Spell metamagic to still cast spells on your turn. Even if not, if this spellcaster is the boss of the fight, it's still a huge swing even if you do have to give up your action each turn to shut it down.

Witch bolt needs at least 120 ft range and needs to work through total cover. So you can witch bolt someone and then continue doing damage through walls at them. That at least gives the spell a specific niche in that if you've got someone defending a choke point you can witch bolt them and force them to move or keep taking damage.

Crown of Madness is a great opening move if you are hidden and ambushing the group. Cast it and watch the chaos, distracting the targets while the rest of your party attack! Witch Bolt is good if you can cast it through your familiar and THEY can keep the target in sight... (Small lizard on their back, etc.) True Strike is misunderstood. Yes, the bit about just attack twice instead is true, it ignores the fact that you can cast it to REMOVE disadvantage.

True strike is a great spell for surprise attacks or for melee enemies still outside of range or hiding in cover. Crown of madness is a great way to start a brawl as long as you keep hidden or for shutting down an enemy tank (even if all he does is attack suboptimally it can go a long way in the right situation). And witch bolt is perfect for tight dungeons where fireball is too big or there's not enough enemies (especially if a wizard is high enough for it to always deal full damage) the problem is less with the spells and more with dms not providing opportunities and players not recognizing them

I like bad spells because not every spell is meant to be 'cast'. For example, true strike sucks right? Not if it is in a magic item, like a ring that can cast it as a swift action. Witch Bolt isn't great... until you have a wand that casts it twice as a single action. Crown of madness? It's an actual crown that re-casts the spell every turn, so even if they save, they still need to keep saving. Curse that dang thing and throw it at your enemies.

This just boils down to the tried and true argument of "It's a DM spell!" as an excuse for bad design. That may be true as far as it goes, but if a spell is so badly designed that it is only useful as an interesting quirk on an NPC/Monster, then maybe it shouldn't be in the PHB in the first place but rather be an ability in the monster/NPC stat block. I'm not talking world building/utility spells like Ceremony (still not well designed) and Illusory Script, etc. Otherwise, they are trap spells: traps for new players who are unaware of how bad the mechanics of the spell really are. Fortunately, it appears that the design team is moving away from this design to give Monsters/NPCs their own abilities rather than overlap so much with the Players.

The idea of having spells that are fun to us against PC is reasonable. Like in all good game design, tactical options should be fun as much for the user as they are for the target. However a spell that's only useful or fun when it's targetted at the players would probably work best as a creature/NPC "ability" rather than cluttering the spell lists of players and acting as noob-traps.

Mostly being a PF1E player, which has dozens of times the number of spells of 5e, I have often said there is no such thing as a bad spell, only uncreative casters. In PF1E, there is a low level spell called "beguiling gift" where you had someone an object and they use it. Most people only ever consider trying to had them poison food, but they forget about drugs. There are some drugs with NASTY side effects in PF1E, like disadvantage on all Will saves. Another idea I had was to use skills in artistry to make jagged glass and rocks look like candy. If the enemy failed the check to see through my ruse, they suddenly eat broken glass. There's also a spell called Unnatural Lust, which makes a character try to kiss another character. Most use it as a one-round crowd control effect, but I have combo'd it with vomit swarm to vomit a swarm of spiders down the throat of an enemy.

Pathfinder 2 *really* puts that to the test with some of their spells. The spell lists are basically 50% real stinkers (Like a spell that sorts things, but is very explicit about what can be sorted, how much and in what way so that you DON'T use it in creative ways. Also it takes a minute to cast when sorting them manually could also take just as much time), damage spells barely better than just attacking with weapons and also heal.

Witch Bolt gets too much hate. It's not too hard to stay in range and pick a target without easy cover, and one spell slot for potentially a full minute's worth of spells isn't too bad, even if it's a little boring to just do that every turn.

In the case of True Strike, I feel like there's potential value in it, but those potential uses are held back by its range and the fact that it's a spell. Imagine if it was a universal mechanic that everyone could use with a range of... say 90 feet. Call it "focused targeting" or something. In the example you gave, it's clear that the opponent is not in range of the party and doesn't have a ranged weapon available, so in this case True Strike is a good *offensive* option when you don't want to put yourself out of position by dashing up to your opponent and letting them get the first hit. In general a ranged weapon is the way to go here, but that isn't always an option, and having *any* use-case and no investment in resources like cantrip slots would do a world of good in making the effect of true strike viable.
@mallowbunny1059

A) Crown of Madness: The spell only works when you're directly close to another player character, which usually isn't the case, because people fear AoE attacks. Having cast Crown of Madness on your team makes you think that the enemy caster just wasted a spell slot. You'd be happy. At least if you missunderstand the spell in the way you do and most other people do. It's not a damage spell. It's a spell that shuts down someone's attack action for good (if they're only melee). If you tell your enemy to attack someone that isn't close, they can not use their attack action and the only thing left they can do is help, move, change weapons, yadayada. THAT'S the way to use the spell. It's not a damage spell. And suddenly, people fear it again („The target can act normally on its turn if you choose no creature or if none are within its reach.“ => Means, if you DO chose a target, they can't act normally and if they can't reach it, they can't attack.“) But: On the same level, there's several other spell options that have the same effect and do that much better. Scrap the little damage you get out of it for better, more reliable crowd control.
@mallowbunny1059
@mallowbunny1059 2 месяца назад
B) Witch Bolt: Yes. Sounds awesome. Until you notice that the first d12 usually puts an enemy on Death's Door already, your ally kills the target and you lose the subsequent actions. Should have better cast a cantrip for the same effect of softening a target. Upcasting it makes no sense, there's much better damage spells in higher spell slot levels.

C) Image this: The enemy with the big club points at your wizard and uses... THE DASH ACTION. Suddenly, he stands right infront of the squishiest enemy. Yeah, explaining why the players cant use a simple spell, but then explaining why it's OP when used against the players? That just makes me hesitant to even play D&D! If the DM uses crown of madness once, the players will know for *every future encounter FOREVER, at EVERY game session* that they are forced to be spaced apart, or be punished by crown of madness. Fun ruined, regardless of what the DM intended for the spell. Being hit by witch bolt and being "forced" to deal with it by simply... walking around a corner, or flying upwards 30 feet... or throwing sand in their eyes. Witch bolt isn't even good for the enemies to use. If attacking an enemy ends concentration anyways, why wouldn't i throw a rock at them? True strike is unequivocally a roleplay spell. You just need to make sure, ONE attack hits really well. So the situations it's useful in are obvious.

How I'd change these spells to make them useful: Crown of Madness just needs to be a bit stronger. Force a character to move and attack an ally up to half their movement. Make away with the "humanoid" limitation, make it work with any creature intelligent enough. Change Witch Bolt to deal 2d6. There. You just made it a useful spell. Sure the other limitations are a pain, but here's the thing: When I think of Witch Bolt, I think of how it's as likely I'll get a 1 as it is I'll get a 12. An entire turn could be wasted in doing 1 damage. Change it to 2d6. Maximum stays the same. Sure, chances of doing max damage are also thrice as high now (1/36 against the 1/12 of the other) but you've gotten yourself a spell that, should you keepit running, will still give you a pretty consistent damage. A N D the minimum is 2, not 1. And minimum is also a 1/36 chance, of course. And True Strike gives you a +10, not advantage. Mathematically, that's like getting two advantages instead of one (I think). "but what if for whatever reason the character also has advantage, it'd be broken" it's an attack roll not a damage roll, chances of getting a crit are still the same, let a character spend a turn to try to make sure they hit instead of literally waste a turn and a spell slot.

You might only get one attack over two turns, but it's actually better than missing two attacks because you rolled average with low bonuses.

To save you 6 minutes; as a GM run bad spells that make encounters more fair on your end and force the player to think. Edit: usually for these spells as a GM I just have homebrew magic items that bring down the cost of the effect, I know other magic items are better used but it's a small tool before being given a bigger better tool.

I tried using true strike at one point, but another player would consistently kill off my target and ignore my frustrated sigh. The GM showed blatant favoritism to this player in the past so I didn’t even bother asking them to knock it off. It wouldn’t have stopped them anyway.
