A castle nut mystery 

It's just trying to look more like a castle and less like a nut.

plastic baling twine and a bit of dirt can do amazing damage

Someone machined it like that. Much like centrifugal clutch this is used to power an espresso machine

Is there a cover plate that goes over The chain drive? because it could seem like the plate cover over the chain drive can wear out the castle nut.
