At the turn of the century, an entertainment revolution transported Bristolians from their everyday lives to a fantasy world of celluloid dreams. In its heyday, going to the cinema captured the imagination of young and old alike. Bristol boasted over 60 venues ranging from a part-time swimming pool to luxurious super cinemas.
In the 50s and 60s television's popularity increased. Cinema-going began to dwindle and the old picture houses disappeared one by one. Today the cinema is back and thriving. Alongside traditional venues, multiplexes and the Imax cinema offer a new all-round entertainment experience.
Made in the year 2000, this Bristol cinema documentary looks at cinemas old and new, as they were at the start of the twentieth century up to the beginning of the Millenium, including:-
- Local contributions to the development of moving pictures
- Bristol Cinema history buffs Wally Ball, Denys Chamberlain, Bryan Haynes and Bill Knight, reliving the magic and romance of a night at the pictures
- Behind the scenes at both classical picture houses and modern multiplexes.
- The devastating effect of the blitz
- Silent movie footage

The Gaiety. As a small child growing up in the area, it was my theatre of dreams and instilled in me a lifelong love of big screen magic. And old Mrs. Burns next door did some lush sweeties.

I remember going to the cinema at Filwood as a child for 5p on a Saturday morning, also going to the Gaiety with my sisters and my cousins happy days.

Living in Marlbourough hill behind Bri. We used to.go to the White Ladies cinema Saturday mornings. It was fantastic with my brother 😂

I’m 70 and used to go as a kid early 1960’s to the Vandyck Cinema, Fishponds on a Saturday. To what we called the tanner rush (sixpence). I was an ABC Minor who sang the song with others 😀

We would have been there at the same time! Tanner stalls, 9d circle. Birthday kids up on stage getting free ticket for following week….the boos as the weekly serial started differently to how it ended the week before….debris raining down from the circle onto those below.I’m 70 too …..tanner rush in the morning, buying the green un after the football…happy days

brilliant, love this. filwood cinema is about to be demolished. very sad. used to go to Saturday kids club. we used to sing to the brook bond tea advert with the monkey lol. how I miss my childhood. we didn't have much but we were happy.

I remember the Brislington Cinema in the 50's, I went in a couple of days after "Rock Around The Clock " had been shown. The teddy boys had ripped out a load of seats, and they were left in a big heap next to the emergency exit!

The Globe was my favourite, because . . . When I bought my first car, it was an Austin Somerset convertible, and it was very old and used to be kept on a farm. The first time I drove it I pulled the roof down and it was wonderful. Of course, being England, it wasn’t long before it rained so I quickly pulled the canvass roof back up only to find the stitching on both sides, from the back window to the front, had completely come apart and all it did was direct the rain onto the driver and passengers instead of keeping the inside dry. Not having much money, the roof was never properly fixed and leaked perpetually when there was rain - most days. So, having a leaking car roof was the main reason that The Globe, at Lawrence Hill, became my favourite cinema due to the fact that on one side there was a small canopy along the pavement (sidewalk) and, with a little care, I could park most of the car under there while watching a film inside. This way, the car seats were more or less dry when we came out of the cinema. My only hope was that a policeman didn’t come by and catch me for parking on the pavement!

Thanks for uploading, an excellent documentary which brought back memories (BTW, You might want to throttle back the adverts as it was borderline greedy in that respect)
