On August 11th, 2024, Caltrain started a soft launch for their new Stadler KISS EMU train sets, before the major launch on September 21st, that would replace the decades old F40 series and gallery cars. Here you can see both the EMUs and Diesels run up and down the peninsula, and some Amtrak Capital Corridor trains in Santa Clara.
Footage filmed on 8/11/24 @ Burlingame, Santa Clara, and Millbrae Stations.

Would be cool to see the AEM-7’s retrofitted for rail yard work or as an electric head end going north to sf and a diesel going south to gilroy.

On the one hand, it is unbelieveably awesome to get these Stadler KISSes. On the other hand, it is never a happy occassion to watch a locomotive (or EMU or plane) make its final revenue run, and F40PHs will not be an exception.

Why do the Sadler trains run with only the one pantograph up?

It has enough power to operate the train from one end to the other. Not only that, but because of how electric trains are built. Because the rails and wheels are conductive, the power going into the motor gets grounded at the rails, completing a full electric circuit.
