A Change of Fate: My Story of Childhood Sexual Abuse & Forging Meaning | Nice People

In the U.S., 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. Roughly 1/3rd of them were abused by a family member.
I am one of those children, and this is my story.
This isn't an easy story to tell or to hear, but it's one that's shared by countless others - possibly even you.
I hope that sharing it helps you in some way, either to know that you’re not alone, or to gain a better understanding of the cascading effects of childhood trauma and abuse.

Fascinating!A trauma induced psychosis overcome by an incisive intelligence. You know,in our ER,we used to stress to patients who went through terrible accidents, that the only way to overcome this was to talk about what happened over and over again to everyone they knew. This is the only way not to bottle this up and make it destructive.I applaud you for your resilience and intelligence and,you will definetely not loose those 20 years of your life.As far as I can see,you will live a normal healthy lifespan.Way to go ,girl!

Heather, you are an inspiration. I’ve just found out my ACE score is an 8 and also a newfound diagnose at age 30 (BD2) along with years of PTSD, social anxiety and mild symptoms of agoraphobia. I can relate to so many things you have expressed and I always felt alone. Thank you for being vulnerable. Thank you for showing me I’m not alone.

You are not alone! Not even close (sadly). I didn't talk about it in the video, but I've also struggled with agoraphobia in the years following the 2017 assault. It does get better, though! My heart is with you, survivor sister.

I'm sorry you went through that difficult situation. This story helps me understand the females I've known who reacted in ways i didn't understand in the past. Some have had a very difficult time accepting a loving relationship without undermining it. Love and prayers to you that happiness is the future for you.

I’m crying watching this… especially when you talk about the probable outcomes.. you described exactly how I feel. I also have DID… your story resonated so much with me, so many similarities. I had never taken the ACE test but I had a 10… and hearing all these statistics and studies makes so much sense for so many things for me and my life.. Thank you much for share this. Truly. I’m so sorry that this happened to you, you didn’t deserve a second of it. You are a beautiful human who is worthy of all the love in the world.

Hi Heather, A couple days ago, I decided to search for why cPTSD is not recognized in the DSM, hoping maybe it will be soon enough. That’s when I found your channel and your video discussing that very topic. Awesome video! Thank you so much for that one! I just finished watching this one and it hit me so hard. I can relate to everything you talked about. I just want to thank you for all you do. It has encouraged me so much. You have no idea! I’ve currently been struggling with depression/meds because of the cPTSD. But to be able to use the illness as fuel to reverse the effects and help others… Wow! What a great reminder! You are not alone Heather. Thank you for reminding me that I am not either!

Such a poignant story, beautiful transformation, and loads of courage and resilience. What a woman you have become. Your aura is completely different than it was at the beginning of your spravato videos. I strongly believe that history is bound to repeat, until we heal. Good job Heather, may you inspire many beings to follow the path of healing. Lots of affection from Switzerland 💛

All of this is so far away from my own reality. Yet...I am truly privileged to have heard about some of your reality. This has left me...thoughtful. In comparison, mine has been a life of forgetfulness and thoughtlessness. I've had no idea that people who went through these things....thought THESE thoughts. I can never forget... Mahalo for sharing your experiences...with all of us. Wishing you MUCH aloha!

Also I have to hop on here again to say just how much of a story teller you are! Even the clips and imagery you chose to tell this story is so impressive. You are a writer, your pacing of this story was professional. Putting something together like this is not a simple task. I hope you are very proud. You have managed to put together many full documentaries on your channel that have all be so inspiring, informative and entertaining.

Brave Heather, thank you for sharing your story with us. I am 64 years old and have similar experiences and only recently has science caught up to recognize, understand and find a way to treat CPTSD. And through EMDR and DBT I’ve been able to reduce my score by almost 40 points! You are still with me every other week as I listen to your Spravato playlist and I’m so thankful for you and this channel. ❤

Thank you so much Heather. This is one of the most powerful videos I've ever seen. You did a phenomenal job of weaving your personal story together with scientific information to give a clear understanding of how childhood trauma affects people throughout their lives. I'm one of those very fortunate people with zero ACEs, and I think our world would be a far better place if others like me had a better understanding of how significantly childhood events can impact adult lives. This video should be at the top of RU-vid's recommendations for everyone.

The ups and downs you have endured, especially your honesty about ending it, resonated for me. I and many people genuinely look up to people like you because if intentional or not it gives a lot of hope for folks while theyre enduring very difficult times. Thanks.

Dear Heather, what happened to you was just awful. My own experience was not nearly as bad and yet i am here, looking for solutions, nearly 45 years later. Like you i feel it has just ruined my life. I dont know what to do anymore. Actually i never did know. I just want to reach inside my brain to cut it out and throw it away. I dont think therapy will help and i really do not want to talk about that stuff with anyone. Im sorry this terrible thing happened to you and hope you will continue to heal.

Wow, this was amazing. ACEs is new to me, but its potential to effect a paradigm shift in mental health therapy seems real. The definition Felitti gives at the end i'm going to jot down. Re Andrew Solomon: I also experienced a lot of "ah ha" moments reading his "Noonday Demon". Note: I found myself wondering as I listened, how monsterous is this monster? I know the focus of the story is what happened in the wake of trauma, but the monster remained a bit abstract for me w/o knowing much about his behaviour.

@@nicepeopletalk Hi Heather, I hope you are doing well. I watched this whole video a second time and wanted to tell you again I think it is one of the very best videos I've ever seen on RU-vid. I am doubling down on my first impression. First, you are most welcome for me listening to your story but THANK YOU SO MUCH for the bravery and strength it took for you to do it. I speak from experience that I know you having the resolve to do this video will empower you in your life, and you will empower others who see it to come forward to share their stories. I know this because my wife is a childhood SA survivor like you, and she had the courage to share her story with me and a few others. Doing that gave her strength and removed a lot of fear and shame she felt as you already mentioned. Also, it enabled me, her husband, to better understand her, her struggles, and better support her and love her as much as I possibly can in the best ways possible. It has really made our relationship as close as a husband and wife can possibly be, and I thank her regularly for having the courage to share her story. Also, I know from experience that sharing your story here on RU-vid itself has great power as well. I know this because one of the other best videos I've ever seen is Clark Frederick's interview on SWU. His story was so powerful that it enabled many other survivors to find their voices and be able to share their stories. You have also done that with your video. You have changed people's lives for the better by making it, and what could be any better than that? Thank you again for your strength and example. I am very proud of you. You are an amazing person and are as tough as people come. Take care, Brad.
