This year we had a very “slow” Christmas because my son of 17 years old had his tonsils removed the 22nd of December. We had to wake up very early the past days to make sure he’d take his painkillers. Watching your Holliday “specials” enjoying a nice cup of coffee on the couch made it so much more relaxing. So thank you Ash, is what I’m trying to say.

I totally agree about the tornado-style of kettle, as my trusty 'Kelly Kettle' has never let me down over the last 15 years - and on a number of occasions has managed to boil water for much needed hot drinks in gales and foul storms, when other folks 'higher tech' burners have failed 👍

Other hiking kit essentials are a compass, parade whistle, and flashlight. Once I fell off a ledge and the whistle enabled rescuers to find me. Perhaps it saved my life. Cheers

I thoroughly enjoyed your chat and I have to admit the UFO question did make me smile a bit! Great answer, but if you ever want to look into the 1980 Rendlesham Forest UFO Incident is probably the most documented UFO case in modern history, and right there in the UK.

When I was a young man living in England you could go to the pub have a heated discussion and it didn't affect the friendship, quite the opposite. But now it is very tribal, people with different political views are seen as personally evil. I fear it will not end well, divided we fall.

My UFO question made it through! What a lovely and progressive perspective. Ive even heard theories there are phenomena and entities that are part of our universe maybe even the earth that are beyond intelligence dont experience space and time the same way we do . And what we are witnessing is a small part of a larger structure at work.

Salubrious - that’s a new word for me! It will be jotted down as my word of the day in my Leuchtturm notebook. Thank you, Ash! Also, I know that you came of age in the 1980’s and 1990’s. If you would like a throwback to that era it might be fun for you to watch some of the UFO episodes from the Unsolved Mysteries series with Robert Stack. My wife and I watched all of them a few years ago and got quite a kick out of it.

Happy new year Ash! Backgammon is an easy game to play. There is strategy and luck of the dice involved. Mastering it all takes some practice. Find a local pub, club, or some friends to play with. It's great fun. Over here in the States we have a game played on the same board called Acey Deucy. I believe it was invented by our Navy officers. That, my man, is the most fun and challenging betting man's game there is. Tournament play is available for both games and good fun too. The luck of the dice levels the field even though strategy plays its role. I hope you find a way into this marvelous sport. Cheers.

Ash I have been wanting a Kelly kettle for a while. Seems to be very efficient. You and your wife and son are lucky to have your parents still around and living so close. My parents have been gone for many years now. As for home wear I'm much like you, I wear a shawl collar sweater Oxford shirt and chinos for winter. Summer short sleeve shirt and chinos in summer. Interesting session today. The two questions that stand out for me. One with the American (like me) talking about being aware of your surroundings when your out. Your point was well made here. The second was on the UFO question. As a kid back in the 1960 I had a short run on spending my evenings looking to the skies for those UFOs . On your follow on comment about not being a person of any one faith I had to stop because I do have a Catholic faith and I not only believe there could be some life on distant plants but I also believe there is an afterlife that we all strive to get to. All the best to you and a Happy Christmas holiday.

I appreciate your views on vigilance. Knowing your setting is critical. Violence in the US actually follows a similar pattern. Given that it's a country of well over three hundred million, we have much more violence in raw numbers. That said, it's pretty well concentrated in major cities. On average, if you remove New York City, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago and Miami (if I recall correctly), our violent crime rates drop below those of the UK and Scandinavian countries (again, if I recall correctly; it's been several years since I looked at the data). Violence has more to do with proper education and values coupled with competent law enforcement than it does with firearms. I live in a quiet suburb in the Western US and plan to retire to the country in a few years. Excellent chat!

Dear Ash, Most amusing to hear about the way the UK regard safety as a given. As a German, be assured for us it is the same. But for the Americans this seems to be a slightly appalling thing. My Ford Mustang is a US import and it has an emergency escape grip in the trunk. It glows in the dark and there is a manual on how to quickly escape and run away from the car. 🎉😂

On another note my favorite footage of this topic has to be 2012 Nasa footage that shows what appears to be a Jupiter-size shadowy object tethered to the sun. Sort of re-fueling perhaps then swiftly moves away. It was debunked as a solar flare but still fascinating footage.

Good stuff, Ash. Hope you and your family had a good Christmas. UFOs. If we humans discovered a new planet, within range of our technology to reach, what would be the FIRST sort of vehicle sent to examine that planet? It wouldn't be an aircraft. It would be something that went into orbit, many miles above the surface, and far outside of the atmosphere. It would be packed with all sorts of cameras and sensors, tools that could tell us all we needed to know. Things like the composition of the atmosphere, surface temperature, climate, presence of water. And signs of intelligent life. So, no. Any civilisation advanced enough to explore distant parts of the galaxy isn't going to send some silly flying machine, readily detectible by the Mark 1 human eyeball, to dance around our stormy and crowded airspace on the off chance of kidnapping the odd (human) nitwit.

Speaking of trousers...here in the US trousers without a break is becoming the norm at least on young guys and models. However, I find it very off-putting and unsophisticated. No. I’ve lived in Europe a few times and feel strongly connected to the countries which form the community. But it is to be remembered that Brexit was only relating to the EU. The UK will always are part of Europe by geography, and you can’t vote against that!
