"Hobby is the word they use to denigrate the thing that makes you different from everyone else. "Hobby" is what makes you different and special and the thing that you love and they denigrate that because it's hard to control you when you have something that you love." This is the kind of thing you keep to tell your kids every day. I'm not a high-schooler, but I'll go back if I can be mentored by Daniel every week. Make it happen, Allen! Hooray for this long awaited discussion! Yes, every female character I’ve read so far in Long Price Quartet is compelling and on par the male characters. I love them all! I wish I couldn’ve been a fly on the wall for the “epic fantasy symposium.” I can picture exactly what Daniel Abraham is talking about when describing short-distance changes in the North Valley of Albuquerque. NM feels very rich with diversity and shifting landscapes. You know I’m a settings person when it comes to fantasy books, so I’m excited to read that one! I need to find the Diana Gabeldon book and add all the other Daniel Abraham books to my Wishlist! Allen, when you read Leviathan Wakes, I have to know if you’re a Holden or a Miller! 👀

This was such a great interview! I have only known Mr. Abraham from his Expanse novels (I'm a little obsessed with it) but this was so great to learn more about his fantasy series. I really enjoyed how excited you were to talk with him about everything. Thank you for this!

This was so fantastic. What a great guy to do this chat with your and the booktube community. I have only read The Expanse (and only book one) and enjoyed it but was very daunted by the 9 book series total. I definitely think I need to move over to his fantasy novels sooner than later I can tell from this discussion that I will probably love them. Yes, I listened to the spoiler sections but I have no doubt I will have forgotten it all by the time I get to those parts since it was very much out of context. Now I just have to figure out where to start.....

Incredible interview. Thanks so much to both Allen and Daniel for making this happen! 1:18:47 Daniel is right, of course. Yardem was a good friend, and he did what needed doing, even when it was unpleasant. We all need a friend like Yardem to knock sense into us when we need it. (Dagger and Coin / King's Blood Spoilers) That scene does have betrayal, but not by Yardem. In that moment, Marcus is about to steal from Cithrin's bank branch. He's willing to destroy everything that she's built -- her branch, her career, her professional reputation, and any respect he might have had for her autonomy. He'd take all that away from her, just to assuage his own guilt over a mistake he made years ago. He pretends that it's a selfless act and for her own good, but deep down, he knows better. So do we. And so does Yardem. Marcus always knew this day would come: it's been foreshadowed since the start of book 1 that there would come a day when Yardem "throws him into a ditch and takes control of the company." Yardem does this to protect Marcus (and the people Marcus loves) from Marcus's worse impulses. And when Marcus regains his sanity and returns a wiser and more sober man, Yardem hands back the company that he so generously stewarded in Marcus's absence. May we all be lucky enough to have a friend as loyal as Yardem -- someone who understands that what a friend *wants* is not always what they *need*, and that "supporting" a friend doesn't mean enabling their worst impulses, but instead doing whatever is necessary to protect them from the impulses that would lead toward their destruction, even if it means physically restraining them. P.S.: What Yardem does is not only an act of loyalty to Marcus, but it's also an act of loyalty to the mercenary company that Marcus has built, and to Cithrin as well: in that moment, Yardem sees a man who is about to steal from the woman who employs him (and Marcus). And so, with great reluctance, after offering Marcus multiple chances to change his mind, Yardem commits an act of violence against his oldest friend, because that is his employment (which they both agreed to) demands of him. As Marcus would say, "It's the job."

Was in the middle of a re-read and was just reminded of another brilliant bit of foreshadowing for this scene: in the last real conversation that Yardem and Marcus have before that point, Yardem had some harsh words for Marcus, and an argument ensued -- which ended with Yardem starting to apologize for "going too far," and Marcus interrupting Yardem's apology, saying, quote, "Going too far’s your job. When it’s called for, you should always go too far. Everyone else respects me too much." Yardem promises, "I'll remember that, sir."

Enjoyed the non-spoiler parts of the interview. Also love how a Walter Jon Williams short story was one of the inspirations for LPQ. Further proof WJW is a writer's writer. I'm surprised no one on BookTube has dug into WJW's treasure trove of work.

Love to see you chat with Abraham! The comment on what a "hobby" is and how people can denigrate you for it resonated so well with me too, and his explanation of Kithamar as inspired by the Three Colours trilogy was revealing (in a good way!) I actually found your channel through your effusive praise of LPQ on Chatting with Nutts not that long ago, so I'm gonna call this serendipity 😅And thank you for putting in spoiler blocks. I haven't finished Dagger and Coin yet!

I am so glad you were so enthusiastic about LPQ. It's one of my favorites now. I had always planned to read the Expanse, but I don't think I would've found LPQ on my own. And Daniel Abraham wouldn't be a new favorite. I still need to read Dagger and Coin, so I couldn't listen to every second of this interview. But it was cool to see Abraham on booktube!
