I had a chat with circumnavigator Alan Martienssen when we were both anchored in Matuawhi Bay, Russell, Bay of Islands early January 2020. His boat is almost an exact copy of Peter Hill's junk rigged, 'BADGER' (a Jay Benford design).
ZEBEDEE is engineless, and a lovely boat, and I enjoyed my visit on her. Unfortunately when we went below and had a long conversation , I had the Iphone video in 'selfie' mode, so all you can see is my chest. Never mind. Next time I cross paths with Alan, I will ask again for a tour below decks.

Thanks for this, mate. The plans for my own junk rigged Benford Sailing Dory (37.5' version) should be arriving next week! Can't wait to get started on building the 1/12 scale model of the hull, to test out some modifications I want to make.

Thanks mate, but being honest the video is a bit shit and I left a lot of the content out that I shot with Alan. Next time I see Alan and his boat I will do a better job, like not having the phone cam facing my stomach when down below listening to his sailing yarns. Good luck with the build, they really are neat boat's the Benford sailing dories that can sail anywhere. Cheers.

lovely boat but i would have a small engine 10 hp single cylinder would get you out of trouble if you needed it, i lost a colin archer in 1986. a small engine would have saved her

My new/old boat will only have an outboard motor too. I take your point though, and one has to weigh the pro's & con's as per almost everything to do with sailboats and sailing :-)

I know that this is not a Junk rig question , but the ball hitch on a bracket near the bow really caught my attention. What is the purpose/uses of this arrangement?

@@runtonefeedler2012 I will ask him next time I see him sailing, which may be just after Christmas, but it could be for the Yuloh, which is a type of sculling oar...not sure.

This is interesting, especially as I have an opportunity to buy a NZ designed Askew 34ft steel junk rig. I've never sailed a junk rig so what differences are there with a traditional sloop? Where can I find out more? eg can you raise, lower & reef from the cockpit? do junk rigs (especially steel ones) have huge difficulty windward? is two masts a big maintenance upkeep cost? Thanks.

I am quite new to junk rig myself. Google Junk Rig association and join up. Membership starts at about 7 pounds sterling, Then you can post on the forum and all the experts will answer your questions. Also google the free guide: Junk Rig for beginners - by Arne Kverneland. Of Askew designs, Bruce Askew has a good name, and produced a few good hard chined designs from memory. Like any rig, you have to set the rig up well for best performance, but reefing is far easier and safer than bermudan rigs. Good luck with it all.

@@junk_rig_sailor1698 I like the fact you called it a Bermudan and not Marconi. I've got a chance to buy an unfinished 43ft steel junk rigged project. Just don't know.

Yes, think of the billowing sails on a tall ship. That shape on a junk rigged sail provides a lot of extra power that you do not get from a Haslar type flat sail, cheers :-)
