A cheap fix for worn out drills. (41)

As you can see I love DeWalt and I couldn't recommend them enough.
My Makita combi cordless drill has taken some hammering (literally sometimes) and over the years it's started to smell and complain a lot.
One quick and cheap fix is to change out the two carbon bushes for some new ones! Especially when it's so easy to do so.
Join me as I fumble about in the shed trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about.
In an attempt to inject some life back into the old dog.
No tools were thrown in anger after stabbing myself in the hand with a tiny screwdriver during the making of this video!

Nice one. Done a few of these in my life. The older Makitas had a cap on the side much easier to replace. But with brushless now so much more efficient I’ve not got many brushed tools now.

I went through loads of cheap drills and eventually splashed out on a DeWalt XRP drill, so much better and more torque than most of it's competitors.

New man shed? I have a Makita drill my builder gave me that needs new brushes. I was going to do a video on it, but you've saved me a job!

I know half the world is in Brushless territory now but I'm dammed if I'm just going to throw this old thing in the trash for the sake of a £6 part. Are you glad you made the switch to Makita? At least it's all the same batteries now!

I have burned a couple of these bad boys out by basically not really paying attention just how much abuse I was giving it! Poor girl got a harder going over that a Thai brass! However, they were under warranty and have managed to keep it in service by changing the bushes after it had a new motor. I’ve got the brushless version now but even she is starting to feel the pain a bit, we do a lot of rewires so they get a fair amount of dogs abuse. Both great drills though! Nice video fella

Most modern drills now are brushless motors . Had my milwaukee 12v 7 years and my 18v about 4 years without any problems.

Can you do anything with worn out batteries, mine don't seem to last long and left overnight are completely flat

Look on ebay for an adapter to convert latest batteries for older drills. I got a 10+ year old 18V Makita with u/s NiCd batteries going with the 18V Makita BL batteries for the cost of £15 adapter from China. Very high quality kit too!

Other things that could have been done, is to flatten the end of the bad Brush with a piece of emery cloth, or fine sand paper, to get rid of the burnt part, but don’t go mad doing it. With a piece of emery cloth about half inch wide, and about 3-4 inch long, put it around the commutator holding it reasonably tight, spin the chuck with your other hand, to clean any rough or burnt parts, until the commutator is back to a shiny copper colour. Then, with a thin blade from a stanley knife or similar, gently run it down the slots on the commutator, blowing off any fine particles. Spray with a little “good old WD40”. Dry off any excess WD40. refit Brushes and back cover. Then listen to a lovely sounding Drill. Obviously, if the Brushes are really worn down low, then fit new ones, and still clean commutator, as above. Ta Trev.

That's a great tip for next time Trevor 👍. Unless I've gone brushless by then? Tool maintenance is a must to keep the whole system moving.
@peterwhite51
@peterwhite51 4 года назад
As Trevor says, but avoid using emery paper as the particles can be conductive, definately sand paper. My old apprentice master used to "tune" Spitfire aircraft generators in the war, for minimum radio interference, wearing a pair of headphones and with the engine on full lick and a stick with sandpaper on the end to polish the commutator, (Bring on Health and Safety.)

Peter White, That’s why WD40 was mentioned to spray on after blowing off any fine particles, it washes off any fine particles that may be left behind. I’ve done this method for about 35 years, with great success! Trevor.

@JBE
@JBE 4 года назад
@@AdeptFPV I believe it is to ground any build up of charge within the MFT via your body. This would only be small but could cause problems with readings? You'll have to ask better minds than mine for the exact answer. Try David Savery, John Ward, GSH or e5. These guys all have extensive experience and knowledge with MFTs. Failing that give Kewtech a call.
