Very good tip. I got the One Little Bear D60 and the Rega units. Not only they work perfectly but adjusting the turntable was a breeze. Thank you very much.

Thanks for sharing this and not mentioning using standard light from the mains. In Amsterdam, when my SL1210 was on the spot of its own strobe, it was always off using ambiant light. I guess 50 Hz from the mains is not 50 Hz, not even close. Good to see you again!!
@zulumax1
@zulumax1 3 года назад
That is true, now that clocks do not depend on 50/60 Hz for accurate time keeping the power companies do not maintain the frequency as accurate as they did when we depended on our synchronous AC motor alarm clocks and business wall clocks to keep accurate time. The old rubber wheel rim drive AC phono motors also depended on it to rotate at a certain rpm. Power company induced wow in the speed as frequency changed.
@lmaoroflcopter
@lmaoroflcopter 2 года назад
er I'm calling you on that. Given its a fundamental part of how the power distribution system works, if there is a frequency mismatch even just between powerplants, it causes huge issues on the grid. For example in Europe the frequency is maintained even across countries, due to their interconnected grids and in fact countries that destabilise the network too much (we're talking 0.2 Hz [in the US I've seen 0.5 Hz being referred to] here) are cut off temporarily from the wider grids, until they can resynchronise with the rest of the grid. gridwatch shows the metrics for the UK over the last year and you can see its generally kept within .1 hz of the 50. gridwatch templar gives you a real-time dashboard of the current UK generation metrics. Can't share links here as it appears links result in my comment being deleted :(

Personally I would not use a mains powered strobe, I use the battery powered Keystrobe and have done for nearly 20 years, super quick and highly accurate (I also is the Keystrobe disc).

it's funny, because it's working fine (i mean app - not that one in a video) on iphone 8, but I have a problem on iphone 15. Therefore, you can always give a shot with your phone firstly as it's free

I was exited about this until I saw that the wall power supply is only a step down transformer from 230 volts AC to 15 volts AC @ 2:56. It does also say 12v AC on the device. That means it is still using the frequency from the wall as a reference. Just use an old non CFC florescent lamp or a neon lamp and a printed strobe disk. Now if it had it's own quartz locked crystal inside that would be a different story. Did sound too good to be true at that price.
@mattspokane

It looks like you have to hold that strobe for it to work. Does it have something where you can screw it onto a tripod or something? Some turntables require you to turn a screw underneath in order to adjust the speed and you kind of need at least two hands. I am looking for a little strobe that will clip to the table or something
@anadialog
@anadialog 3 месяца назад
Nope, but that would complicate what is simple. Just rest it on something enough to let the light through. You aren’t going to find many true strobes and not at this price that is why I made this video. Otherwise there is always this alternative: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ug66WQAMeM.htmlsi=6Mnbjy8MgCmO2D7e

Thanks for the great video, I bought one on the strength of it, sorry if this is a dumb question, but what are the quadrant of lines marked 5 to 25 for? Have you noticed how hot the power supply gets considering it is only being used for a short time?

Is it a trick of the medium we are viewing it on that I could see that the lines were still without the strobe light?
@TheNorliss

Thanks for this, Guido. I recently used a £10 plastic disc with the mains light: it seemed to look ok on 33 but it make it seem like the table was running slightly fast on 45rpm which was odd given it's an accurate quartz-locked direct drive table. Then I recently got an old JVC QL-7 as a backup table which contains the strobe light built-in. When I put the plastic disc on, it was the same story as with the other table i.e. ok on 33 but showing fast on 45rpm even though the in-built strobe light was dead-on for both. This made me think the cheap disc and mains light wasn't totally accurate. Btw on your example the disc made it seem like the table was running slightly slow on both speeds since the lines were creeping anti-clockwise?
@anadialog
@anadialog 3 года назад
I see. Yes it is running slightly slow, you are correct. The EMTs are hard to setup. Gonna half to solve that.

@zulumax1
@zulumax1 3 года назад
Ya, you can check it, but if you have to do adjustments to the motor speed it is time consuming to keep going back and rechecking, and repeat the processes until it is spot on. Not practical, sorry.
@Yeastextract
@Yeastextract 2 года назад
So if the speed is not correct with this method how much do you adjust by? If you can work that out then you have to sit for another 3 minutes to check again. By the time you’ve done that I’ll have finished an LP side already 😂 totally impractical, you must have vast amounts of time to waste.

Unfortunately Brexit is the answer to most of these higher prices...in any case try checking out eBay... P.s. it's not a torch it's a stroboscopic light. Try looking at other brands and the prices for a true strobo light....completely crazy!
@SidBonkers51
@SidBonkers51 2 года назад
@@anadialog Sorry but how could Brexit have anything to do with the difference in costs between the US and the UK? And a strobe light for engine timing costs around £12 -£20 here in the UK, thats less that half the price of this.
@anadialog
@anadialog 2 года назад
Well, all commodities raised in price in the UK due to import duties and the huge truck driver's strike that is still limiting supplying. It's in all the newspapers.
@SidBonkers51
@SidBonkers51 2 года назад
@@anadialog Firstly we (UK) has a trade deal with the EU, however bad it is for our fishermen and Northern Ireland but there are NO import duties between the EU and the UK and secondly the driver shortage is as bad or worse in the EU as it is here in the UK. So dont blame the propaganda you read in the tabloid press, thats just what the media owners want you to believe, try looking at the facts behind a story rather than taking everything you read in a newspaper at face value and you will be better informed. Blame high prices on the Covid 19 or the container crises that it led to if you like but that still doesnt account for the differential in prices between the US and the UK, the US also suffered from Covid lockdowns and their containers all being in countries were they werent needed due to port closures. The people of the UK are being ripped off.

@QoraxAudio

Does it run directly from the 50Hz power supply or does it have a battery?
@zulumax1
@zulumax1 3 года назад
It says on the power supply INPUT 230v 50Hz, OUTPUT 15v AC 200ma. To me that means it is just using the mains 50 cycle as a reference. I was thinking it was quartz controlled frequency, doesn't look that way now. May as well just use a neon lamp and a printed up strobe disk.
@QoraxAudio
@QoraxAudio 3 года назад
@@zulumax1 Idk if the AC coming from the PSU is conclusive... The rectifier might as well be inside the lamp itself. I don't see the point of generating your own 50Hz frequency; the frequency of the power grid is very accurate - likely to be more accurate than an average oscillator used in consumer appliances.
@zulumax1
@zulumax1 3 года назад
@@QoraxAudio It does say 12v AC on the device itself. My guess is it is using that to run LED lamps. That would explain the low cost.
@zulumax1
@zulumax1 3 года назад
4:00 After watching again it does say 12VAC at the top of the device. Thinking about that I am almost certain they used white LED lamps which makes sense since a light emitting diode IS a diode it would only light on half of the 50 Hz cycle. This would create a clearer strobe image than a neon or fluorescent lamp which would dim only at the zero volt cross point.
@QoraxAudio
@QoraxAudio 3 года назад
@@zulumax1 Perhaps, but the ramp up and ramp down of the half sinewave makes visibility of the strobe bars an issue. Using a square wave makes LED turn on and off much quicker and that makes the strobe bars on the disc much better visible. So if that's the case, they probably have something like a zener diode in between that kicks in somewhere during the ramp up and cuts off somewhere during the ramp down. Or something similar... there's definitely more to it than just connecting a diode directly to a sinewave.

Yes, and to be sure of the frequency I use a digital test meter that reads AC line frequiency, as long as it shows your house current frequency at 60Hz or very near an incandescent should be fine, I also hear a neon lamp is very good but hard to find except for small electrical testers.
