"Unu"-used throughout Jamaica and yes it's very much an Ibo word. So many of our patois words are Ibo, Yoruba,Fulani and regions of Ghana eg Akan, Ewe etc. Anyway I'm going to nyam my food now and upset ms chin😂.
Jamaicans potois (patwah) is from African words but their accent is not African. Miss Chin was correct in saying the Jamaican accent is Irish. Language and accents are two different things. Africans speaks English with African accents of their mother tongue. All over the world people speak English with accents of their first language. Poor Irish slaves were the first slaves brought to Jamaica by the British. Irish people were look down on by the British so they scattered them around the colonies but the majority went to Jamaica when Britain captured the island. The British then went to Nigeria and brought those Africans to Jamaica. Those white Irish slaves and the Nigerian slaves cohabit and had children. That's how the accent came to be Irish and the words Nigerians . The British also went to Ghana and other West African countries and brought slaves from them to Jamaica. All the African slaves spoke different languages based on their tribes. They created Potois (patwah ) one dialect/language so the slave masters would not understand them but they could communicate with each other using one language although they had multiple tribal languages. They also abandoned tribalism. They were now one people " Africans ". The Chinese and Indians were tricked into coming to Jamaica by the British after slavery with the promised of payment to work in the cane fields as indentured servants. The Chinese walked off the fields and open shops because they were shop keepers before. This is 1830s. They supplied goods to the free slaves and hired them. Some married blacks and build families. The Chinese move up from little shops shops to owing supermarkets and manufacturing goods. They employed black Jamaicans. I know of some who also send their employees children to universities and provided houses for their employees. Some immigrated to USA and Canada in the 1980s when rhe political clumate in Jamaica was terrible. They took their hired help with them. They got them legal in the USA and Canada. Jamaica fell into economic despair at the time. Shops had no food on the shelves and what was there was " married" a termed use to force people to purchase more than one stuff. MIss Chin family stayed and they own Lasko and other establishments that Jamaicans benefited from. People who don't know Jamaican history and weren't born during the day 1980s says foolishness. They never paid attention in civic and history classes. There is now new immigrant Chinese in Jamaica. They are not affiliated with Jamaican Chinese who been there since 1800s. Jamaica is not an African country. It's a mixture of many people.

Physically observing Ms Chin I would dare to say she is of the Asian Race, probably Chinese/Vietnamese ethnicity. Since Jamaica is primarily compromised of African ethnics, then it would stand to reason that our dialect is a mixture of African languages and some other languages (English, Spanish, Irish,, and more). But Potoia dialect is mostly Afrikaans. The African majority being slaves initially when they were brought to the Island mixed their language with the new languages they were forced to learn.... hence, Potoia dialect/now recognized language. I think Ms Chin would be considered Jamaican after getting to know her story. Many Jamaicans are of mixed ethnicities and may not be Black African but they indeed ARE Jamaicans! I saw the video the JA Chinese lady made. Her point was that if you don’t have a JA passport when you fly into JA you will be treated like a foreigner, which is exactly what you ARE. Her point was that just cos your parents or grandparents are Jamaican, if YOU come to Jamaica on a non-JA passport you will be treated like a foreigner, and will be given a set amount of time to stay in the country. All of this is true. Our national motto is “Out of many, One people”. It’s not “Out of Africa, Africans”. Her saying “Jamaica is a diverse country, and not an African country” is also TRUE. Our population is primarily of African descent, but is NOT exclusively so. Again, she is right. Her accent is not fake. She IS a “Yardie”. She’s just a “Yardie” who live a farrin. Same as you. That doesn’t make her (or you) any less a Yardie. The only issue I have with Ms . Chin, would be that her father went to China to marry her mother. I don’t recall her saying that in her video, but it’s been some time since I saw it. If that’s true, it’s a Chinese “old school” cultural thing. I don’t care for that, but it’s not news. The Chinese workers who first came to America in the 1800’s to build the railroads, ALSO imported their wives from China. You are correct with most issue except that Africans were not indentured servants. Africans were brought there as slaves. Germans, Irish, Chinese etc. was indentured servants. Where either paid or offered lands.

Yes, it is never right for a country to be TAKEN over by nationals of another. However, everyone needs to understand what is a take-over. It can't be the case of investors going to a country and trying to reap reasonable benefits from their investments. Decent investment must always be encouraged from whomever is willing to risk their money. If Jamaicans want our country to keep out other nationals, how much development could we expect? How many of those who would prefer no foreigner's investment would take up the slack? Some people talk without reason!
I think this Chinese Jamaican women is speaking in the manner that she does due to outsized influence Our small country has around the world. As a result frankly, either through selfish jealousy or information, she wants the world to believe Jamaica’s outsized world influence is not simply from Black African descended people. I spoke on this issue on my channel several times. She like many others like her are culture vultures. It was black people who created the culture. It's black people fought for the freedom of Jamaican.
Who brought Jamaica out of destitution and provided goods, services and elevated blacks after the British abolished slavery and left blacks to fend for them selves without resources? . It was the Chinese and whites mainly Jews who picked up the pieces and created jobs so the blacks could advance in Jamaica. Many establishments in Jamaica today were started by Chinese and white Jamaicans. All these people criticizing Miss Chin never opened a business and provide jobs for black Jamaicans. They never send children who are not family members to schools. They never assisted any black Jamaicans to purchase a house. Well Miss Chin's family has been in Jamaica since the 1830s and have contributed immensely to the economic development of the country and the uplifting those who works for them who are primarily black Jamaicans. Have you ever heard of a Jamaican Chinese having altercations with their own family and eliminating them? NEVER. That happens in black Jamaican families a lot. When one succeeds the other family members will eliminate them to get their house and any properties they have. Culture doesn't put food in hungry bellies jobs do. All the big supermarket owned by Jamaican Chinese locked up their establishments and left the island. Some simple returned the keys to the bank if they had loans with them. Miss Chin family stayed. Do you know where they went Panama? They went and reestablished themselves in Panama. Panama is a robust country because of the Jamaican Prime Minister not understanding that the economic development of the country relied on people who feared his rhetoric and ancestors fled China from communism. Those of us who are older Jamaicans knows the contributions made by Jamaican Chinese to Jamaica. We know that the success of the country today is because of them. They started with a small shop or a hand cart and sells products. They lived in the back of their stores when they started. They sacrificed the high life to build their businesses. I agree that we are a black country but Jamaicans base their opinions on what they have experienced. In my community in Christiana, Christiana Bottom had a good chunk a white people. Knox College used to be exclusively for them . In the traditional high school,s you are exposed to a lot of different races.. In my likkle poor community Some of the poorest people were a white Jamaican and an Indian man we call Babu.,. Even within my family. It wasn't until i was an adult and was able to travel around Jamaica that i realized how different it was in different parishes.
The word Mi is not Irish. It’s Spanish it means my in Spanish. Patois is made up of 5 languages 1. African igbo language which is why we say words like deh Weh seh guh nuh suhso and O 2. English which we also speak as broken English 3. Spanish which we use words like Mi which means my. Mi bike - my bike and there’s other Spanish words we use too. And that’s from the colonization from Spain. 4. French - just a touch Some of our accent is Irish ☘️ and British and certain words we use but the majority of how we speak in Jamaica is African and English dialect.
@@hughrattigan3288 remember in Spanish they say things like mi amore which is my love or mi madre which is my mother etc. I do agree that the Irish Gaelic language and the Scottish do also use the term mi which means my. Now we as Jamaican when we say a mi that means it’s me and when we say mi car that’s my car so it’s all about context. Which means a certain context could mean we’re using the Spanish version of the word and in another context we’re using the Irish version.
You are denying our unique reality, our unique culture is a blend of our real world experiences. At its base is African but we have mixed and match along the way. That is just our unique reality based on our experiences. Being a Jamaican is more than just the colour of our skin. Being a Jamaican is a shared experience, a culture passed down from generation to generation. Being a Jamaican is a blend of all the people who came and those who were brought here by force, mixed all together to create our own unique reality. In many cases, if we were to travel to Africa we would be cultural outsiders because we have been disconnected for so long. They evolve and we evolve. One does not have to be black of African descent to be a Jamaican, although the majority of us are but that is not the "Jamaicanness" criteria. One Jamaican cannot tell another Jamaican that they are not Jamaican or not Jamaican enough, you do not have that right, who died and made you boss of all Jamaicans. Especially when we all live on this rock, sharing its burdens, hardship, couple gas riots and nightly merriments, political violence and water lock off and light gone. Not to mention some hurricanes over the many centuries and decades. This line of argument is counter productive and comes from an inferior North America minority perspective. As of 2023, Jamaicans of African descent represent 92.1% of the population, followed by 6.1% Afro-European or Brown, 0.8% East Indian and Afro-East Indian, >0.8 % Caucasian, 0.4% Chinese and 0.2% other. In Jamaica, we have bigger fish to fry and cannot survive this North American and European carb in a barrel mentality because we are too small. Sorry, I disagree with your stance against Jamaica being considered as diverse: the communities where my relatives and I grew up are diverse; the schools we all went to were diverse too. Indians, Chinese, Middleeasterners, Europeans, Canadians. I remember clearly, my 2nd Form class of 28 students having 3 Chinese, 5 Indians, 1 Syrian, 1 Lebanese, 1 Israeli, 1 Canadian, 2 Americans, 1 Nigerian, 1 Guyanese, 1Trinidadian, and the remainder made up of Jamaicans of African descent. Plus, we had teachers from Canada, England, Guyana, Trinidad, Serra Leone, Barbados, and Jamaica. If that was not diverse, I really don't know what is. We just had our reunion, which marked the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our graduation. It was a beautiful gathering!

I think it's same across the island. Yes, we have people of other ethnicities, but they are a very small percentage of the population. I cannot imagine when I was going to school with my classmates who were either Black, White, Chinese, Indians or mix up-mix up, hanging out at various parties and fetes, teen jam or on the football field, telling them they are not one of us, not part of the whole, not Jamaican enough. I had a problem with Immigration in Jamaica when I was leaving after having stayed in Jamaica for two years! I had believed that being born Jamaican, there wouldn't be a problem staying in Jamaica over the time stamped in my US passport upon entry. However, the immigration office gave me a hard time: he scolded me that being born in Jamaica didn't automatically qualify me to stay there!
Babies don’t get to choose their place of birth, but adults have the option to choose if they care about a country enough to abide by its residency or length of stay requirement, if not a resident living there.

It's a separate language that is English based, but has African vocabulary and grammatical structure. Jamaican ENGLISH is NOT PATWA. English and Patwa are TWO DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. People get confused because we slide back and forth all the time. We don't even think about it. Go watch her interview. Lorna Chin family been in Jamaica for almost 200yrs. She's descended from the original Mister Chin that first came to Jamaica in the 1840's.

Ms Chin and and community are worried about the new generation uniting with the mother land. Fear is in the air. United we stand as a people divided we fall. Africa unite! Knowledge is power, as kids we were taught about the dark continent so we had negative views, but thanks to technology and youtubers we can see how brainwashed we were to keep us separated.

Well said my sister, there is slight variations of our accent all throughout the Caribbean also Guyana and Nicaragua , the word dunce should not be used to refer to anyone, children were chewing on led pencils not knowing the harm it could cause and people were painting with paints containing led not knowing the harm, if the word is going to be used then everyone is dunce because what ever you don't know you are dunce to and no one knows everything.
As a Jamaican who has traveled the world on account of the music industry, I can inform us about many life improvements that Jamaicans have effected on the world stage but I will ask this one question. If a Goat born in a Cow pen does it makes it a Cow?. Selah
Jamaican is majority African, thus it is an African country, race wise. Same reason you don’t go to an Asian country with a few black people and call it diverse, it’s Asian ! Yes we are very tolerant of many races but that doesn’t make us diverse. Jamaica is a tolerant African majority country, period. One love ❤
I’m just trying to understand what is it that they contributed to the Jamaican culture that reflects their Chinese culture. Do you celebrate Chinese New Year or anything like that as part of the culture. Not even the language they add anything to it. I look at the Jamaican cuisine and nothing reflects Chinese lineage. I think that she’s a hurt person who didn’t heal from her childhood wounds of being teased at school, because you can see that she has some healing to do with all that aggression and calling people names which is no excuse for her bad behavior.
That is not what Miss Chin says. She said the accent is Irish which is true. The words that makes up potois ( patwah) comes from many languages mainly African languages. Jamaicans don't have an African accent but our potois is African. When Jamaica was being populated there were many people from all over the world there with different accents. Poor Irish were the first slaves brought to Jamaica by the British then Africans. Some Irish died but those who survived had children with African slaves and created families. They were both considered " lower" classes by the British. They were both working in the fields. St Elizabeth is a reflection of that. There is a difference between language and accent. All over the world people speaks English with different accents but English was introduced to the new world by the British. England and Australia has the same accent. America and Canada has the same accent. The rest of the world speaks English with the accent of their mother tongue. If you go to Ireland you'll recognized how Jamaicans accent is very similar to theirs. My Irish mechanic in America had only Jamaican mechanics working for him because he said it was easier to communicate to them without having to repeat himself because of his accent. They understood what he said and likewise he understood them too. That was in the 1980s.

If you can look @ the woman & easily identify her as Chinese Jamaican, then what are you? Technically if we want to be correct, she is not Chinese Jamaicans because she is not of Chinese nationality because she born in the NATION of Jamaica. She is actually an Asian Jamaican. Asian would be her ethnic stock & Jamaican would be her nationality. But the question can still be asked. If we can readily identify her as an Asian Jamaican then what would that make you??? African is not a nationality. It is an ethnicity or a race. Race & nationality are not the same thing. Saying “I’m not African, I’m Jamaican makes no sense. It only makes sense to those who are ignorant to that fact that Nationality & race are 2 separate things. Over 95% of Jamaican NATIONALS are identifiably AFRICAN in terms of their genetical make up. & your ignorance to this fact does not make it any less of a fact. Btw. Allow me to further educate you (although I have a feeling you will only resent me for it because we all know that a certain type of ppl hate correction & hate truth but I’ll go on anyway). …. The only reason why we call them Chinese Jamaican is because they, unlike us know exactly where they came from before they migrated to Jamaica. Otherwise the more correct term is Asian Jamaican because it would cover any Jamaican NATIONAL who is from an Asian country. So even a Indo Jamaican is an Asian Jamaican. So would a Jamaican who is of Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese etc. Even a Syrian Jamaican is of the Asian ethnic stock. Now for Black Jamaicans, the overwhelming majority. Due to the wickedness of slavery, we don’t exactly know what COUNTRY in Africa or tribe we came from. If we did we could distinguish ourselves as Nigerian Jamaican , Ghanian Jamaican etc. So we have to go by our racial ethnic stock which would be AFRO JAMAICAN. & like I said, this demographic makes up over 95% of the Jamaican population. Race & Nationality is not the same thing. Please educate yourself & not base everything on how you FEEL about something.
When christfacolumbus invaded Jamaica 🇯🇲 he saw the Indian and Spanish then the British came and taken over bringing slaves Indian African Chinese so yes out of many we are one 😮😊

I do not know the color of your skin. I am assuming it is light because you associate black with ugly, and many people do not see themselves as ugly. I’m hoping that at some point in your life you get to see the beauty of the black skin, and if you indeed are dark-skinned black, that you come to accept that you are beautiful. I also hope that you grow to accept other people’s opinions as theirs and that they do not become “big ole black gyal” simply because you have a different perspective.

Not everything you are saying is not totally accurate. Jamaica is a racially diverse country, and that is why we are, "Out of Many One People." Patios is also diverse. Yes, it is primarily made up of West African words; however, there are Spanish and English words interwoven in Patois. I didn't hear Miss Chin's synopsis of what it is to be Jamaican.
