I have been following Dr. Esselstyn's plan for three weeks. I started after getting routine blood work & being shocked by how high my cholesterol was. I am otherwise healthy, was eating a low meat omnivore diet, lots of plants, get daily exercise, normal BMI. First week was hard but now its become easy with zero cravings. I feel amazing and wanted to see if anything had changed so got a lipid panel. My total cholesterol went from 271 to 193 in 3 weeks 🙌. My LDL is still too high. Went from 187 to 122. My HDL did also go down from 62 to 48 but thanks to this video I know not worry. I am thrilled with the results and I have more energy than ever and feel so great. My husband is doing this with me and he hopes to get off his statin. Thank you so much Dr. Esselstyn!

QUESTION: I wonder if the dementia Dr. Esselstyn sees in some of his friends with longtime hypertension is due to the hypertension itself?, OR due to the effects of the long term use of the medications to treat the hypertension ??
@annemccarron2281
@annemccarron2281 3 месяца назад
If you have hypertension you are struggling to get blood to diffuse adequately throughout the body. Inadequate blood flow leads to diminished oxygenation. Tissues without proper oxygenation die. The blood pressure medication probably caused less tissue death in the brain than there would have been without the medication.

Many thanks for posting this! I wish that someone would ask Dr. Esselstyn not about just a focus on cardiovascular disease, but the down sides of the whole food plant based diet on other longevity markers and a possible omnivore balance. One major one is maintaining strength and muscle through the years. Plant based diets can indeed provide the proteins, but it is so much harder to obtain amounts to sustain muscle. The other major concern I have is: we have essential amino acids and essential fatty acids and those through plant based diet (and major avoidance of fats all together as mentioned by the Dr make me want to ask: what about all the fatty acids needed?) There are other draw-downs (for me) as well, e.g. the enormous gassy state while under whole plant based foods ... and major hunger which whole fatty foods avoid. I wish there was a solid debate between the carnivores, omnivores, and plant whole food community to really shine a proper light. Thank you again Gustavo for sharing!

Oxidized LDL, ADMA, high sensitivity CRP, Lp-PLA, Myeloperoxidase. If you get the "Cleveland Heart Lab" cholesterol panel (done by Quest at the cost of about $400), you will see the results of the tests he mentioned on page 3 of 6. They are not on a standard Lipid profile.

Good morning! Yesterday was my 28th day of doing the Whole Food Plant Based diet with No Oil and No Nuts, I had an appointment with my cardiologist who was fascinated by what I am doing. She ordered a lipid panel to see if this diet showed any changes. My lipid panel showed a reduction of my cholesterol from253 to 147; LDL down from 165 to 76. BUT my HDL went down from 72 to 51 and my Triglycerides went up from 72 to 108! Does anybody know why this happened or direct me to any publications or resources that might shed a light to this change. Thank you.

@mariacroumlich. Dr. Esselstyn mentioned that HDL will go down as the liver senses a higher level is not needed. This is new information to me as I was baffled by it as well. My triglyceride level went up from 59 to 90 but I figured it was because I was eating bagels with raisin and also was made with fructose syrup. Dr. Esselstyn also said sugars will do it.

An interesting and valuable conversation. I note the comment on avoiding olive oil however I my reading indicates that 'numerous epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies suggest that the consistent intake of olive oil can limit oxidative damage and inflammation, thereby restoring endothelial function and slowing atherogenic development as well as aiding in the control of cardiovascular risk factors'

Balsamic & rice vinegars are laden with sugar. Why not apple cider vinegar?
@martykerns3802
@martykerns3802 11 месяцев назад
If you like apple cider vinegar, then use it. Many people don’t like it. Balsamic vinegar has some sugar but I wouldn’t agree that it is “laden” with sugar. It’s also a question of quantity of vinegar used. Dr E’s not recommending that anyone drink 8 ounces of vinegar a day.
