The father's name of Aaron ,Moses, Miriam is often confused with Father's name of Maryam . They are two different individuals with the same name i.e Imran(Amram) The Jews are sarcastically reminding Mary (Mother of Jesus) about her noble lineage with Aaron ,Moses, Miriam and *falsely* insinuating how she could commit such a low act forgetful of her pious ,virtuous and glorious ancestral line. When I came to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, I asked him about that, and he said: “They were named after their prophets and the righteous before them.” Al-Kalbi said: Aaron was Mary’s brother from her father, and he was the best man among the Children of Israel. Al-Suddi said: They meant Aaron, the brother of Moses, because she was from his descendants, just as Tamimi is said: O brother of Tamim.
The funny thing is that a branch of my Arab tribe has another proud name, which is “Salma’s Brothers.” This Salma has an old story, which is that she called and asked for help from this branch. Every time I meet my friend from the same branch, I tell him the brother of Salma or when I want him to help me. He also says it to brag or when he hears surprising news, he shouts it out. Dear Christian friends - This question is not new to us and interestingly this was even asked to Prophet Muhammed pbuh himself. Its mentioned in hadith 2135 in Sahih Muslim (book of narrations) . I wont go there in hadith books as it will confuse you more. Lets stick to the point and to the holy books. The best way to answer anyone asking a question is to reply back with something which they can relate with - In this case I believe its Bible. If you open Gospel of Luke Chapter 1 verse 5 you will notice that the cousin of Mary i.e. Elizabeth (who is wife of Zakaria) was also referred to as daughter of Aaron. Here Bible isnt wrong either and to be honest we dont care as Muslims believed in Injeel which was sent to Jesus pbuh and not the current Bible which is corrupted/fabricated to a large extent. We believe in what Prophet Muhammed said and replied when he was asked this question(as mentioned in Hadith number 2135 Sahih Muslim) that the people of old age used to give names of their persons after the names of Messengers and pious persons who had gone before them. Just like son/daughter is used in English language in place of descendants as per Arabic language construction sister word is also used in place of descendants along with son/daughter. Gospel of Mathew Ch.1 Verse 1 says Jesus Christ, the son of David Luke Ch.3 Verse 23 says And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph Do these verses make Jesus son of David and Joseph? Obviously not as Son here means a descendent. Thus, as per Quran, the name of father of Mariyam(Mary), which is Imran(Quran Chap 66:14), is same as the name of father of Aaron(Quran 3:30). Note that the name of Maryam herself was also name of sister of Moses (notably even though Miriam is not mentioned in Quran but it is mentioned in Old Testament Bible i.e. Exodus 15:1, 15:20 and 15:21, Numbers 12:1, 12:4, 12:5, 12:10, 12:15, 20:1, 26:59, Deuteronomy 24:9, 1 Chronicles 4:17, 6:3, Micah 6:4). Its interesting how the name of father of Mary which is not Imran but Joachim in Bible doesnt appear until 2nd century in the Gospel of James, part of New Testament apocrypha(written by an author James claiming to be brother of Jesus pbuh but his identity is unknown - Imagine someone writing that in 2nd century claiming to be the brother of Jesus). We Muslims also find it interesting that how the Biblical name of Mary as Maryam from the original Bible which was in Aramaic language(dont forget to check) was later changed as "Mary" in Bible during the Greek translation. We have a whole chapter (Ch.3) in Quran dedicated for the Family of Imran(Moses pbuh, Aaron pbuh etc) and a whole chapter (Ch.19) dedicated for the mother Jesus - Mary. In the Quran, her story is related in three Meccan surahs (19, 21, 23) and four Medinan surahs (3, 4, 5, 66) apart from that Ch.19 mentioned earlier. She has one of the highest positions in Islam among all women and is referred 70 times in the Quran but Christian Missionaries look at that one verse that too partially. Lets decode it. Let's keep the dispute aside and lets ask why Quran and even Bible for that matter mention Aaron pbuh? Why not Moses pbuh. Thats because Aaron pbuh was the first in the line of Israelite priesthood. The complain we Muslims have with some of our Christian friends is that they just pick a verse and try to decode without seeing the context. The same thing applies when Muslims tells them that not once in Bible Jesus says he is God and they reply with the verse from John 10:30 "I and Father are one" without reading the context why he said so ie. when Jews were not accepting his scripts and he had to tell them who he is representing. On this topic just read from John 10:24-10:37 full when you get time. Same thing happened here. If you just read the full verse beyond "O sister of Aaron!" you would know why Allah swt specifically brings up Aaron in this discussion. Let me quote:- 28. Arabic:- Yaaa-'ukhta-Haaruuna maa kaana 'abuukimra-'a saw-'iñwwa maa kaanat 'um-muki bagiyyaa! 28. "O sister of Aaron! thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!" When fingers were pointed at Mary as the Jews said she had fallen, and disgraced the name of her progenitors Allah swt reminds Mary of her high lineage and the unexceptionable morals of her father and mother i.e. that she comes from a priestly family. This is not the first time Quran is referring like that. I will give you another such instance. Chapter 3 of Quran ie. Al 'Imran verse number 35 35. Arabic:- Iz qaala-timra-'atu 'Im-raana Rabbi 'innii nazartu laka maa fii batnii muharraran-fa-taqabbal minnii: 'innaka 'añ-tas-Samii- 'ul-'Aliim. 35. Behold! A woman of 'Imran said: "O my Lord! I do dedicate into Thee what is in my womb for Thy special service: so accept this of me: for Thou hearest and knowest all things." The above verse is about mother of Mary(though the name was not explicitly mentioned in Quran but Bible calls her Anne in English/Anna in Latin) was referred to as "A woman of Imran" as Mary's mother(Hannah/Anne/Anna) is both a descendent of the priestly house of Imran and wife of Imran - A woman of Imran in dual sense.

Except there is a problem Mr. Medical Doctor, Mary and Joseph, unlike Aaron, aren't Levites, they descended from Judah, as did King David. Mary descended from David through his son Nathan and Joseph through Solomon. (Edit) P.S Aaron was a priest, not a prophet.

I would never say I am the brother of my Great-Great Grandfather, but I would say I am the son of him. Now, the Quran does claim that Mary is the daughter of Imran and the sister of Aaron. His analogy is still wrong because unlike Jesus being the son of Joseph and decendant of David. Mary was not a decendant of of Moses and Aaron, nor did she even belong to the same tribe. I see two issues with this explanation. 1. Ukthi is always sister in Arabic. NEVER descendent. 2. Descendents is typically used to point to sons or daughters.. never brothers or sisters. Aaron had a sister named Miriam.. If he had a real sister named Fatima then this explanation would have made some sense but still for above two reasons it is rejected.
Mental gymnastics once again! Marry is NOT a descendant of Aaron, as they aren’t even from the same tribe! Moses and Aaron and Miriam were levites while Mary was from the tribe of Judah. That’s why Jesus is called the Son of David because David was from the Judah tribe so it makes sense to call Jesus Son of David. But calling Mary the “descendant” of Aaron is ignorant as they aren’t even from the same tribe.

Second I see no problem with somebody from the people around Mary calling her sister of Aaron since they both from house of Israel, and also he was a priest afaik and she was serving in temple. Second, the story of Joachim and Anne only appears in the apocryphal Gospel of James, in fact mainstream christianity doesn't have any widely accepted idea of what Mary's father name was.

Muslims are not obliged to believe that Prophet Musa (PBUH) had a sister called Miriam. Moreover Quran describes the reaction of doubting people.Allah didn't say directly.

That's why in the Gospel of Matthew 16:20, it is told Jesus ask His disciples not to tell anyone that He is the Messiah. Why did Jesus Forbid his disciples to call him mesiah in public ? Jesus knew the messiah had to be a descendant of David, while he had no father to claim the lineage of David. So Muslims have known this story for a long time. It's a pity that there are billions of Christians do not know that Jesus is not the promised Kingly Messiah, because he is not decendant of David. But muslim know that He is a prophet and a priestly mesiah. 4). Conclusion The purpose of Maryam being called Aaron’s sister and Imran's daughter is to confirm that she is Imran daughter and that Imran is a descendant of Imran who is Aaron's father. No one can disprove that. Jesus was a rabbi, that's irrefutable proof that he was Levite priest like his ancestor Imran, they were all Levites priest Jesus was not a descendant of David, he could not be the promised kingly-messiah.

Note moses sister and jejus mother aren't same because the verse said O maryam sister of Harun, but if she was same as sister of moses and harun why people called her "O sister of Harun" Insted and not "O sister of Moses" Because moses was more popular and well known that time so it would be more specific. The epithet “O sister of Aaron” used by Mary’s people when they saw a baby in her arms, was simply a reminder to her of the people like her who had gone before and were pious and chaste as Aaron had a genealogical link to Mary, because it was thought that Mary begot this child illegally. Furthermore, the Qur’an, just like the New Testament, associates Mary, mother of Jesus, during the time of Zakariyya. This makes the claim for “confusion” between the two Marys untenable. In fact, in our own time, we may use such metaphorical terms. For example if a Nazi went to a Jewish land, the Jews may call him “O brother of Hitler”. Such terms cannot be understood literally.

It’s the same with the Term “Son”, it doesn’t automatically refer to a literal Son. Lastly, Elizabeth who is a Relative of Maryam is called a Daughter of Imran in Luke 1:5.

There is a very simple explanation of this verse of the Qur'an In the incident mentioned in Surah Maryam, the women of Israel are taunting in anger to Hazrat Maryam and in taunting, a sinner is always associated with the greatest sinner. The greatest sinner in Judaism is Aaron because, according to Jew's, he made a calf of gold because of which many of the people get astray and killed. Exodus ch 32.

Because the author of the Qur'an didn't know the history of Torah and bible so they made a huge mistake calling Mary as the daughter of Arun , sister of Moses, which is 2000 years apart from Mary mother of Jesus Christ and the Maryam sister of Moses. Both the name is maryam so they think Virgin Mary is the mary the sister of Moses. Not only this there are many many mistakes in Qur'an!!! Also none of the Qur'an history is complete. Muslims explains its another name for Joachim. But person's name is name, how one can use different name just because it has different meaning? The answer is in Luke 1:5 KJV 5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. Elisabeth was a cousin of Mary mother of Jesus and Elisabeth was also the mother of John the Baptist. In the verse above, it said that Elisabeth was the "daughters of Aaron". Does it literally mean that Elisabeth was the biological daughter of Aaron or does it mean Elisabeth was the descendants of Aaron bearing in mind the gap between Aaron and Elisabeth was about 1500 years. Christians will readily accept that this verse mean that Elisabeth was the descendants of Aaron not biological daughter of Aaron. Now we go back to the " sister of Aaron" verse in Quran. Maryam 19:28 "O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!". If we apply the same principle of Luke 1:5, we will accept that here it did not mean biological sister of Aaron but maybe it mean descendants of Aaron or someone related to Aaron. In Luke 1:5 the verse say " daughters of Aaron" it mean Elisabeth was the descendant of Aaron.In Quran verse Maryam 19:28 verse it said " sister of Aaron" thus Mary was not the descendants of Aaron but related to Aaron. Mary came from the line of Judah and Aaron came from the line of Levi and both Judah and Levi were brothers and sons of Jacob.So when the crowd addressed Mary, a woman, they had to use the word "sister" instead. To resolve this, they suggested one of the genealogy (Luke) should belong to Mary and in Luke genealogy, the father of Mary or father in law of Joseph ( Mary 's husband) was named Heli not Joachim. It will be absurd, for the genealogy to start with Joseph as not a single drop of Joseph's blood was in Jesus's veins. In Biblical times, all lineage are paternal or maternal, and not through siblings. Muslims cannot say Jesus is the son of God, so they use Marys name. Mary as sister of Aaron is a big error in the Quran.
Hello Naik.. Please know that Mary was never a levite. She did not descend from Aron because Aron, Moses and Miriam are all of same tribe, the Levite. Mary is of the tribe of Juda, from which king David came. The tribe of Levite is of the Priest and Priestesses and the Messiah was never prophesied to come from the lineage of Levites (Priests). Your day explanation is still off.

Keep a knowledge of Arabic bro. There are several places in the Quran where Allah uses the word "brother" to indicate a person being descendant of someone. This is how Arabic works. For example in Quran 7:85, And to Madyan I sent their BROTHER Shu'ayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allah ; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So fulfill the measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due and cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you should be believers. Again in Bukhari, Book 3, Volume 1, Hadith 63, Narrated By Anas bin Malik : While we were sitting with the Prophet (PBUH) in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. I enjoy the discussion here about Mary the "sister of Aaron" . Many claimed Quran was in error because there is a gap of about 1500 years between Mary and Aaron. So either Quran was wrong or we had misinterpreted the verse in Quran . The answer is in Luke 1:5 KJV 5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. Elisabeth was a cousin of Mary mother of Jesus and Elisabeth was also the mother of John the Baptist. In the verse above, it said that Elisabeth was the "daughters of Aaron". Does it literally mean that Elisabeth was the biological daughter of Aaron or does it mean Elisabeth was the descendants of Aaron bearing in mind the gap between Aaron and Elisabeth was about 1500 years. Christians will readily accept that this verse mean that Elisabeth was the descendants of Aaron not biological daughter of Aaron. Now we go back to the " sister of Aaron" verse in Quran. Maryam 19:28 "O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!". If we apply the same principle of Luke 1:5, we will accept that here it did not mean biological sister of Aaron but maybe it mean descendants of Aaron or someone related to Aaron. In Luke 1:5 the verse say " daughters of Aaron" it mean Elisabeth was the descendant of Aaron.In Quran verse Maryam 19:28 verse it said " sister of Aaron" thus Mary was not the descendants of Aaron but related to Aaron. Mary came from the line of Judah and Aaron came from the line of Levi and both Judah and Levi were brothers and sons of Jacob.So when the crowd addressed Mary, a woman, they had to use the word "sister" instead. Instead of using "sister of Levi" they used " sister of Aaron" because Aaron was very famous and well known for his priestly works. Another explanation , Miriam the sister of Aaron and Moses was known to be pious . As Mary the mother of Jesus carry the same name as and had the same pious character as Miriam the sister of Aaron , thus the crowd respectfuly adressed her as ' sister of Aaron' So to conclude ' sister of Aaron' in Maryam 19:28 was not meant biological sister of Aaron but it meant Mary was related to Aaron or Mary had the same pious character to actual sister of Aaron -Miriam.
