Just done so and left a comment and you handled it correctly no good retaliating and making them angry that just makes them determined to fight modeling on every corner.
1st, only an idiot disturbs someone mid flight. 2nd. City officials have no special powers. 3rd. The US govt. + FAA are D-U-N-S registered corporations, and therefore also have no special powers, unless you con-sent, or under-stand.
Codes started as a way to force black people out of neighborhoods in the 20th century, but people forgot that's why they were implemented and get an inflated sense of worth about enforcing pointless rules designed to restrict freedoms of second-class citizens in the first place.
@@anthonylowder6687 The 1950s was a different time. There's no shame in admitting that an anti-black sentiment had a lot to do with zoning and codes being sideways in most US cities.
As a Parks and Rec employee, I can say that 1.) I don't get paid enough to hassle someone like you for utilizing the parks that YOU pay for and 2.) I would love to see more RC pilots out in the parks doing their thing as long as basic safety and common sense is being observed. Good on you. Keep on keeping on.
@@StevenStGelais No. DO dive bomb the soccer kids. Maybe a few styrene park flyers screaming into their faces will teach them to use their hands like a real man.
@@KirbyJ89 Flying anything over people or occupied buildings is not a good idea; common sense rules apply here. Hit a kid when you model doesn't pull up as fast as you thought, guess who gets sued?
Flying at my AMA club site, a few years ago, and had a guy pull in the parking lot, got out, walk up behind me and started yelling "crash", several times. Was Flying my 33% edge 540 which probably had more $ into it than his pos car he was driving. I terseley told him to go back to the parking area,, clearly marked with signs stating " no spectators beyond this point "! I landed and shut down, approached this guy, he was lost and wanted directions! I knew where he wanted to go, I sent him on a wild goose chase instead!😅
Your story reminded me of my dad, we lived in a spot that must have been convenient for people stop and ask directions. The first thing he would always say to someone seeking directions "Oh you cant get there from here" lol. The looks on their faces was hilarious.
I love how he says "There's a lot of people out here that don't know what they're doing" when he is actually the one out there not knowing what he's doing.
He thinks he owns the place, may live nearby, like it’s his backyard. May have been a school teacher or dean. All it takes is one, and there is always one. I fly 2.5 and 3 in. quads, fpv. They are so small you may hear them but don’t see it. All under 250g, and never over anyone’s head.
Well I gotta say, you handled that way better than I probably would have. Not only were you 100% correct, you didn't feel the need to prove that to him or put him in his place, which would have been totally justified if you did, but probably would have led to him being bitter, and done nothing positive for relations between RC pilots and the public. You handled that with grace and professionalism, you're are an asset to our hobby sir, cheers!
You should never have told him you were a certified drone pilot. It is your right to fly in a park, as you explained, regardless of whether you are certified or not. You should have left it at that. Now he's going to walk away thinking it's ok for you to fly because you are certified, instead of understanding that there is no law stating that you aren't allowed to fly there. Now he's going to think he's won the argument. You should have explained the regulations and told him to go away, and stop bothering you.
So complainer dude gets to decide who "Doesn't know what their doing?"....In his opinion no doubt...Opinions are like arseholes, everybody's got one...🤔🙄🇬🇧
Well done! Both of you handled yourselves with dignity and respect for each other. Two gentlemen being careful not to escalate the situation. Thankfully not one of the all to many "encounter" videos you'll find on YT.
Utter rubbish! he should have minded his own business! end of! “I’m professionally rated” was Chad mate It’s irrelevant, also the guy saying “I’ve seen people flying around kids and stuff” SO WHAT? I’ve seen people driving like absolutely morons, doesn’t mean I go up to other drivers about it!

Many moons and years ago, I think it was early eighties, when I lived in London UK, I was flying a large ww1 bi-stormer, a 6' span fabric covered bi-plane in Wormwood Scrubs in London. I was flying fairly high, perhaps 5-600 feet when from the corner of my eye I spotted flashing blue lights; the cop had to walk all the way to the center of the field where I was flying from and he said 'Hello mate, can you bring that plane down'; I asked 'why?' and he says 'your plane is visible on the Heathrow Airport radar and they are complaining'. Back in the day cops were not aggressive at all. I brought the plane down and the cop said his byes and left. The next day and the day after and all, I was back at the same field flying again and kept my flying height to under 400'. That was a fun day.
Send this video to Jay the parks director and ask if this guy really works for them? He never identified himself or his position. He tried to imply you were breaking the law while engaging in lawful activities at your public park.
He just wanted to go out of his way to prove how miserable he is. The spirit in him cannot stand that you are enjoying yourself. This is commonplace now that our bloated government has seen fit to pay a bunch of know nothing bureaucrats to exercise their perceived power over the citizens. He really has no authority and did not provide any identification other than some verbal nonsense. I once had a neighbor that used to contact all these local offices and report me for things that he thought I was doing wrong. The local authorities had to respond, but they admitted that they had no ground to charge me with anything because I was well within my rights. The old guy was miserable and if you took a look at his big fat wife you would know why. He used to make her run the riding mower and that poor mower had all it could do to move let along mow. No one ever came to visit him and if you ever talked to him you would know why. He was the most negative person you ever met. This all explains why his wife shoved all that food into her face. Some people!
this is typical of the type of people who seek out positions in government and especially police. They need to exert authority and control. Its what they live for.
If I am wrong let me know, but it is my understanding that a federal court ( I don’t remember which one) ruling says that the FAA is the sole authority for airspace, making all local and state laws and ordinances null and void regarding the air above the ground.
That guy and you handled it really well, he was respectful and calm so he seemed more like he wanted to make sure you were doing it safely. I moved to a residential area recently so I hope i have no encounters. But what should I do if I end up having one? I should obviously get my AMA but is there anything else?
Yeah, glad it was peaceful. I’ve been flying here for over 4 years with no previous encounters, even in the presence of police or park staff. I would just know the federal regulations and operate within them, and when someone approaches (which you really can’t avoid) you can tell them about how you are operating safely. Good luck!
Who is he to tell anyone how to fly a toy model plane safely? Is he trained? How many year's experience? Kid Flying knows more than him? He wanted to make Shure Flying safely?? Bullshit... Wanted to tell another free man what to do. Because he looked like a easy Target. My 6'2 230lbs construction boots ass Flying? Wouldn't tell me shit. If tried? Lol I would of had some fun.. I ask again sir.. who was he to tell anyone anything?
First of all, it helps if you're right, safe and legal. Second, it helps for you to know what city ordinance(s) there are, if any, regarding the type of flying you're doing. Finally, its always best to be courteous and friendly, until they don't give you a choice. You never know who you're talking to. Could be a busy-body with nothing else to do or it could be a city council member looking for something to "protect the people" from. Good luck.
HAHA I have been flying RC and FBW aircraft for almost 30 years. The fact that he said "oh you have a license, okay you're good" made me laugh out loud. Man has no idea.
I'm so sick of all the bullshitting 'offucials' craving power at the expense if everyone's fun. Please take this guy to court. I don't care if he was friendly. All of these wanna be cops need to be sued into poverty
Before the guy would start asking me for any certification I would ask to see if he was a real city official....some people just think they can say anything and you are expecting to believe them, this guy is obviously a fake.
He just old and was trying to over step his authority until he seen the body cam, someone will always try to stop anyone from having a good time, great video like to get one the same style you have even that hand control.
Bullshit. The guy needs to be shamed. He said he was retired. He had no business talking or trying to enforce any codes. He did not like it so he tried some line of bullshit to stop you.
Almost all of these type of complaints are noise related . he knew you had the legal right to fly there but tried to play the legal card . As to the noise issue , it REALYY does affect many people dramatically . it's like sandpaper on their nervous systems . This may or may not become an issue for you as you get older , so enjoy being a nuisance for now . Legality is no excuse for being insensitive to others .
He just wanted to make sure you weren't going to hit anyone - and the reason why he even approached you is because of some random KAREN probably complained to him. Most of the time those guys won't do or say anything.
Don't understand why there are people who hate on others having fun, just the other day I got the middle finger as I was riding my gas powered scooter goped, same when I play guitar, don't know whats wrong with these type of people.
Great job dealing with the uneducated. Let’s be clear though. The local municipal entity can regulate if they allow takeoff or landing on their property however when it leaves the ground they have no jurisdiction. Once your aircraft has left the ground and can maintain sustained flight you have entered the federally controlled airspace. That is an FAA matter and no other jurisdictions supersede their regulations. Technically it could be challenged that this person was interfering with a pilot in flight and potentially committed a felony. If you were operating under your part 107 for sure it would have been a violation. Again though, great job defusing the situation and educating this observer.
Let me be the first ‘old guy’ to apologize for my generational cohort here sticking his nose into your fun hobby. You were very polite whereas I may have told him to piss off. Hmmm... maybe it is an age thing.
I’m all for drone safety but our county is out of control they said if you fly anything you must carry a 1million ins naming them the solo person! That even if you take of outside any public park you can not fly over it! Must have a faa certificate not sure if they know they have one for hobby and commercial! Sad thing is there’s not any way to fight this!
There might be a Karen nearby that called the city officials. Research has shown that inflatable decoy retail stores or fast food restaurants can lure them away. That way they'll be looking for a manager. The decoys can be placed about 200 yards away. Sometimes decoy barbecues can work to lure a Karen away.
He's an old retired guy who sees something out of place in his world and uses his energy and effirt to correct others. Stale, pale and male! Kudos to you! I would've not handled it as well. Sincerely, a stale, pale, male.
Im 55 and enjoy my RC cars, planes and drones, but even if didnt, I would never understand the propensity to shut down young people doing something that isnt hurting anyone. Its almost like they get something out of challenging other people because their own lives are miserable.
It just never fails. I've been flying drones for over 5 years follow all the rules and also have had many of these encounters. The public still needs to be educated. Why do they feel the need to try and shut us down?

Imagine seeing someone having fun at an empty park flying a badass airplane and think "I need to tell them they're breaking the law" while also not knowing the actual regulations. Incredible
And the type of people that do that...do they go home at the end of the day and feel accomplished? Tell their spouse and kids that they should be proud of mom/dad? Next level special.
People that know the least about some activity (RC, FPV, guns, cars, whatever) are the ones that complain the most about it - and make rules to regulate it. "I can't do that safely, so obviously no one else can."
"Hey that guy looks like he's having fun and is harming no one, better go over and tell him it's illegal since my neighbors best friend was told it was illegal by her babysitter" "Wait he actually called me out and knows more than I do..... I better tell him you have to get a permit too since that sounds like it might be right. Shit he called me out again, I can't just walk away and admit defeat.... I know! I'll compliment the streamer on the back of the plane and fane interest so I can sulk back and go home to a wife that loathes every word I speak. You know what, I'm gonna tell her I go into an argument with an illegal drone flyer and he cried before leaving, then everyone clapped. Yea I'll tell that to my wife!"
"I understand his concern for the safety of all the occupants of the park" The safety of others in these cases is nothing but a tool they use to justify their own nosiness
Exactly! & that goes double & even triple for the faa/ gov. Those are te facts. Anyone can disagree. The devil has many advocates. They can manipulate , write & rewrite history, but anyone who has even just a lick of sense who was paying attention & who is aware of gov & propoganda, knows the reality which is; gov didn't like citizens to have the power to view & record so much. There were a couple of incidents that really set off gov feeling the need to control personal drones. They set out to gain that control by fear tactics. Msm started doing reports on manned aircrafts being in danger (which there had never been any damage). They also did reports of citizens who were afraid drone operators were using drones for "peeping tom" purposes (again, propoganda. Google earth/ maps hasset the standards for no expectation of privacy even in our yards. Fact is drone operators caught a huge corporate hog farm illegal dumping waste directly into a waterway. Corporate owned politicians camt have that. Other situation happened during a protest. Police blocked off an area where they took detained citizens. This place was out of view of citizens including journalist. A reporter flew a drone over the barrier & recorded police . They didn't like that & eventually shot it down with a shot gun. Our gov does nothing for our safety. They take away our freedoms in the name of safety, but it's bs. If they cared about our safety they would give us healthcare we pay for and they'd stop pharma from gouging us.
I like how you handled yourself. You kept your cool, listened, remained respectful and stood your ground. Well done and both walked away with no ill feelings. Thanks for sharing.
@@CustomFPV We tried this method with other hobbies I am involved with, hot-rodding, shooting sports, off road MC... it failed there, you are nice, give them some room, and they take it, then come for more. From your age group, you are at a disadvantage dealing with geezers-with-power. Those geezers among us (like me) can back them down, and send them packing with their tail between their legs. I would have had the mayor's home phone ringing, and the chief of police wondering what that old fool did to interrupt his dinner before that guy got to his favourite bench. Gotta love when the "do gooders" always interfere with a UAS Pilot while flying...SUPER SAFE!!! If there were a problem, they should be waiting for you to land safely. This is such a pet peeve of mine. Glad you dealt with it so well!
Hey Brian! first off, big fan of yours and longtime sub, keep up the good content! And next, yeah! I 100% agree! I’m used to holding conversations while flying so it didn’t really stand out to me but It really would have been nice if he gave me space until I was done. Thanks for the commend!
@Guy Number 1 This is why I only fly quads with GPS, they can hold their position. A plane can stall if its not moving and if you move your eyes from a moving plane, who knows what could happen? It could rise too high then stall. Fly towards the wrong direction (a powerline, tree, person, a dumb bird lol) I kinda want to fly a plane, but also kinda nervous.
@Guy Number 1 Same in the UK, you have to have a spotter (might just be for flying fpv though), I honestly think if you are flying safely and away from people then why does it matter, especially if you know that there is no one around and that no one can get hurt, expecially with the batteries that racing drones and such have, you're not going to be up for long.
@Guy Number 1 That doesn’t apply to RC models under .55 lbs. What you are referring to is craft that falls under the Part 107 rules between .55 and 55 lbs. The rules were designed to protect the hobby flying community.
@@anthonyb5279 oh right, I thought the laws were very similar but I don't pay too much attention to the US laws. Here in the UK you can fly visual line of sight without a spotter but if you want to do fpv then you need a spotter. So you are allowed to fly something like a DJI drone on your own as long as you can see it, but with an fpv drone then you need a spotter which doesn't make much sense to me because fpv drone pilots tend to spend time in the simulator and are generally much more skilled pilots than the likes of someone who just picked up a DJI drone because they though it was cool and took it to the park or something. Also pilots of these camera type drones like the DJI ones are more likely to fly it somewhere they shouldn't like over a crowd of people or in a city centre compared to fpv quads where you generally want to keep away from other people when you are flying. If they are going to have laws like this then I think they should at least have a way for a pilot to take a test or something to be allowed to fly with goggles on alone.
"This is a retirement thing for me". Lets see... being unschooled on the rules or worse yet making up rules and then using them to hassle people in the park on sunny days. @@riccccccardo I don’t know about the queens parks be honest, I think from a legal point you can fly anywhere, I’m talking mainly about gliders and hill flying though because that’s really my thing. As long as you aren’t being dangerous and flying over groups of people there are few restrictions. Having said that we have our fair share of busy bodies who will approach you and tell you they don’t want you to fly. The type of people who think they own the shared spaces. In fairness though you also get lots of people who are ok with it and chat with you about your hobby. No one besides the FAA and the military have authority or jurisdiction over US airspace in the US. No other gov entity can pass enforceable laws regarding airspace usage.
@@SoloRenegade The plane is in the air, which is FAA jurisdiction, but the pilot is on the ground which makes him subject to laws at all sorts of levels. I'm not saying he was doing anything wrong, just that you are even more incompetent at interpreting 'law' than the park 'guardian'.
