@33:00 I see a new battlefield psychology. Just show the enemy what’s in the tank he’s about to shoot at and no guy would ever take that shot. He’d say “Do we really need to fight? Let me buy you dinner so we can talk about this.”

The Russian tanks didn't make it better. the T 34 that first was introduced in 1940, the amour only had 0.59-1.77 inches around it..and the T-34-85, the variant the Iraqi's had left, after the Highway of Death, could have been close to 70%(During the American-led coalition offensive in the Persian Gulf War, American, Canadian, British and French aircraft and ground forces attacked retreating Iraqi military personnel attempting to leave Kuwait on the night of February 26-27, 1991, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of vehicles and the deaths of many )but the T 72s that were upgraded, they made a new one in 2010,were crawling death traps, the M1 could image it before they saw theM1...I'm excited about this because I spent 16 years in the Military, and in my small tiny town for 10 years when you went to HS football games, the homerun fence was a row of about 50 M1s, and used the pine Barrons behind us as proving grounds, and the crazy thing was nobody said: why do we have 50 tanks next to the HS,it was a WW2 base that up defense Hill in Shoreham NY 11786, we had Nike Hercules on them,a NIKE site, they still have 4 or 5 left is you wanna see on google,

The 2022 war in Ukraine backs up the criticisms of the T72 and adds 2 more. The autoloader operates at about half the speed of manual loaders in first contact situations. Where the turret meets the body of the tank is an explotable (attackable) weak point.

I was stationed in Germany from 1973 until 1976. Never heard about the T-72 . The T-55 and T-65, both of which were hampered by the autoloader which had to off target and out of battery which took 20 seconds to cycle and then many more to reacquire its target. Too late.

They HAD to have a reverse driver only because that tank had to have one. 99% of tanks can simply rotate the turrent around 180° to cover their rear. The only redeeming quality that tank had was it's low profile. With missiles now that skim the ground and then gain altitude to blast a tank from the top, that Swedish tank would be worthless today, which is why Sweden retired every last one of them.

The Desert Storm maneuver(Battle of 73 Easting) I would say is number 1 in US, 2 the Thunder Runs Iraqi Freedom, 3 , then when at night we walked into the Badgdad airport without a shot fired, woke up and was surprised there was still a good amount of Iraqi soldiers there, and the Iraqis were even more surprize as they were outnumbered and didn't have 6 or more armored vehicles,. then there was a case that M1 Abrams and Bradley vehicles went out on a scouting missing. they found a full tank battalion of T 72's an old Soviet motorized AAA batteries, here's the kicker, the Republican Guard had it facing in the wrong direction, they took them all out before their crews could even get inside ..the Sherman we had in plenty, the problem was, you needed 3 or more Shermans to take out 1 Tiger tank. or Tiger II,(King Tiger)2 Shermans would have to break off left and right flank and normally 1 Sherman would have to be taken out to get the other 2 lined up for a rear shot...are tanks rounds bounced off them like a rubber ...The Tiger had up to 4 inches of amour, as the King Tiger II had over 7 inches. The Sherman had 3 inches, but it was also the Germans engineering of the rounds they sent down the line, they just had a greater knowledge of how they made their tank rounds amour breaching. but they made a mistake of making their rear amour 2.4 inches...

A QF-17 equipped Sherman Firefly firing APDS could theoretically pen the frontal armor of a Tiger II at 1500+m. Keep in mind it was 7inches+ on thickest parts of armor not every bit of the front. Granted the Tigers can swiss cheese the allied tanks at much longer effective ranges. Tiger 1 could be delt with in the later part of the war but getting close enough to pen the armor or get the flanks usually cost lives.

The Sherman's greatest feature was RELIABILITY. Second, it was easy to maintain in the field. Panthers & Tigers were lost more to mechanical failure than to enemy fire. It was advanced in many ways, one of with was gun stabilization that permitted it to keep a bead on target while moving. The ORIGINAL Sherman had a couple of features that needed improvement: 1. gasoline engine & fuel system was prone to fires when vehicle was hit. Was replaced by a safer Diesel engine. 2. 75 mm main gun was GREAT against infantry, artillery, fortifications, artillery, etc, but not so good against heavy German tanks. The 76 mm high velocity run that (sometimes) replaced the 75 mm original was effective against German tanks. However, tank-on-tank combat was only a minor duty of the Sherman. Its main purpose was infantry support, for which it was excellent. It had later versions that were designed as tank destroyers that were VERY effective against German armor.

The Sherman dominated in what is called soft factors. Tanks that were better in the hard factors (armour, fire power, speed) fared terribly during the war. This includes the big cats especially the panther and war production T-34 that despite the propaganda (Russia has a propaganda wing dedicated to it till the 2010's) was a terrible tank.

I've always heard one of two things about the Sherman's. I've heard WW2 tankers praise it as the best, and I've heard other WW2 veteran tankers say they were death traps. I wonder why/how there could be such different outlooks. Its always been a fascinating observation to me.

Cuz of the thin armor. Sherman tanks were not made to fight other tanks in the battlefield, but it performed more like an APC where it supported the infantry. German tanks on the other hand were designed to have thicker armor and bigger gun to destroy other tanks.
@loganholmberg2295
@loganholmberg2295 2 года назад
@Truth is a bannable offence This vid is really out of date and You guys are misinformed. The Sherman was designed to fight tanks. Its a tank. Tank destroyer doctrine about antitank roles was for when the US was being attacked. US tank destroyers where fast and maneuverable to get the guns where they needed to be fast as you will never be able to have enough guns to defend a line properly from a concentrated attack. Anyway with its sloped frontale armor the Sherman had almost as much armor as a Tiger. But considering the power of the German pak 76mm and 88mm guns you couldn't armor a Sherman enough to take that kind of fire and still be one of the most reliable and combat effective tanks of the war. The 75mm was capable of taking out Tigers and Panzer 4s in Italy and Africa equity handly if they found them. Rember that Shermans never fought one on one. Shermans where deployed in groups of 5. Thats the smallest unit for a US tank unit so they could maneuver around a lone Heavy german tank for a kill. It wasn't until the hedgerows of Normandy that broke up formations and the Sherman gun was starting to feel inadequate which was fixed after the alies started using the 76mm Sherman with Tungstun ammo. Something they decided not to take with them as they didn't want the ammo hassle of two different guns. Also the Sherman was just as likely to catch fire as any other German tank. That was until they started putting wet ammo storage in the Sherman and then they caught fire allot less. I don't know where the myths started but being a Sherman tanker was one of the safest combat jobs in WW2. In fact most Sherman operators where killed outside of their tanks instead of in them. Please check out the Cheiftan's "myth of American armor" and "why the sherman was designed the way it was" vids, His opinions are backed by unclassified documents that he research from the US and British war departments. Note that he is a former tanker and historical researcher for the World of Tanks video game. He does very good in depth videos of historical tanks that he finds in museums and collections. Its VERY informative. You can also check out vids from the British tank museum in Bovingtun as well and the Ontario Regiment armor museum in Canada. The Ontario Museum has the largest collection of working tanks inNorth America.

Yea, shitty frontal armor and a low velocity 75mm. Yea the 76MM was better but imagine if the Shermans would've entered with more of the 76mm or even adopted the 17 pdr and just utilized the M4A3's turret. However the cost of the sherman was done with the mindset "the more the merrier."

The T72 was not a frontline tank. It was a cheaper alternative to the T64 and T80, both of which were actual frontline units. Same goes for the T90 that replaced to the T72. They are meant to be cheaper units to complement the faster, more heavily armored frontline T80s.

@fuckyoutubepolicy staff the t72 used were out dated 15 years before the war started the usaf had more killa against armored targets if you have any proof of t72 cutting off the hands of crew show it then and a 1v1 tank fight is almost impossible especially aginst the russian doctrine first of all youd need to destroy russiam air defences which will be dificult expext to lose a few jets then if you some how destroy them a replacement will be there within a few hours - days and then that would be usless due to russia using more/better SPAA and MANPADS if if you some how destroy every single figther jet and air defence in russia (impossible) majority of the strike jets/mulit role in the usaf will be gone if not all destroyed then youd have to fight russian SPA/MLRS which is better and longer range majority of the land forces will be destroyed before they get in range then youd have to fight anti tank soldiers/ atgm/ mbt/ ifv so a t72b3 is still very useful in modern conflict and it wouldnt need to be the best because the russian air force will destroy them before they reach SPA/mlrs range if not then mlrs/spa will then anti tank crew and russia atgm have twice the range if its a kornet and has a bigger warhead to destroy any bradleys that will support the MBT and russian tanks have atgm which gives them a kill range of 5km for light armored vehicles (bradleys) andbonly the latest version of the leopard 2 uses atgm that are bought from israel not domestoc made so a german invasion will be the same as an american one but significantly wore rhey have less than 300 leopards will russia has around 3k active tanks that can each destroy a leopard or abrams oh and the sep v3 aps wont do much to help it if they go over a anti tank mine which there will be between the frontline

A turboshaft engine, which is the type of turbine in the Abrams, does not spew a hot jet of gas like an afterburner. It does produce heat in the exhaust, as any combustion engine does, but it can be managed. Planes like the C-130 and any helicopter in the military seem to be able to manage the heat seeking missile problem, so while it's always an ever present threat, it's certainly not as bad as these tank "experts" are making it out to be.

The German tanks were primarily good tanks, except for reliability. This is because they were being made by forced labour who would sabotage the internal parts where possible but paid a terrible price if they were caught. This is why their tanks had to travel in low gears and at a lower speed. But in the end, it was sheer numbers that the Germans had to face that cost them dear, too many tanks of differing types made supplying them difficult in the end also, where as the allies relied on updating the tanks they had, all this plus the reliability of the Sherman and ease of fixing in the field, where all pluses for the allies as apposed to the over engineered tanks of the Germans which all led to to many difficulties. We have to remember at first it would take an average of 5 Sherman's to knock out a single Tiger tank until the advent of the higher velocity barrel had been installed on later models, then the 76mm was a good match for any axis vehicles.
