A Closer Look: 19th century Fashion - How To Tell Different Decades Apart? Part One | Cultured Elegance
In this video, we will discuss the changing times of 19th century fashion and how to tell the difference between the different decades. We talk about 1800s fashion and the influence of classical antiquity- featuring an emphasis on the white muslin Grecian gown. Then in the 1810s we see more color and the dresses drawing closer to the body; there is also more ornamentation and firmer fabrics. In the 1820s fabrics remain firm and greater detail color and patter on the garments emerge. In the 1830s we see sleeves grow in size and the skirt too, the waist is at a natural position and there is extreme exuberance on the garments and over the top motifs. In the 1840s there is a drastic transition to demure modesty with the onset of queen Victoria’s coronation. The dresses stay domed in shape but have little ornamentation and there are no large puffed sleeves. The dress is fitted to the body and then descends into a domed shaped skirt, the shoulders also are seen in a sloping fashion.

This short video was very authoritative and gave me greater confidence in identifying the different fashion periods in the early 19th century. Just from a fashion perspective, I would love to have been alive during the Neo-Classical Period to the Romantic Period. I love the simplicity of the first period to the opulence and gaiety of the last. But I'm in love with later periods too.

Another great western historical fashion channel! My fave eras had been the the Aughts and the mid-century of a given century! I think it gives a macroscopic look at what had been held on from past centuries as new progressive thought and interpretation gradually dictated a new future. It'll be interesting what the 21st century would be for future fashion historians as they trace our values and what we wanted to change as the years went on.

I fell in love with fashion history when my parents bought a set of encyclopedias and I discovered the fashion history section which I read over and over again. (The volume automatically opened to that section.) When I was bored in classes at school and in college I would design clothes from different periods of time. Finding your channel was a happy coincidence. Thank you so much for your knowledgeable and well produced videos. They’re a treat to watch.😊👏

Well made, again - this time with even more astonishing images. May I come with a suggestion, which you at first might find to be slightly off centre for your Cultured Elegance concept. Try and make a short video explaining Aristocracy, the privileged few as an important social factor. An over reaching social arch - and then connect that knowledge to the evolution within various aspect of cultured elegance, such as class, people, and style. Go deeper down in the social class struggle. Not to make a video about class struggle, but to better explain the deep down social roots like "why did this happen". Beautiful hand made broderies on the surfaces of pretty women are fine, but after all they are on the surface. Done in a careful and balanced way such an extension will, I believe, greatly enhance your conceptual standing. Dig deeper! From what I have seen I know you can do it. Thank you.

Fashion-particularly before the 20 century-- was the provenance of the aristocracy and the ascending industrialist/mercantile class. Their clothes were created by dress makers or bespoke tailors. The cost of materials for gowns and men's waist coats was disproportionally high. Back then labor was inexpensive but materials were costly. My great grandfather had a bespoke men's shop in the 1860's in Prague, his customers were of the aristocracy and the upwardly affluent mercantile class. If one was a lady's maid, one's uniform would be provided by their employer. A yearly salary ( housing and food was provided) but a yearly income was around 50-75 pounds per year. A middle class salary of about 300 pounds per year would. A governess would make around 100 pounds per year. For women, apart from marriage being a governess was one of the few respectable professions.
