A closer Look at Jin Yoshida - SOMA

I don’t think the gurgling noises are because he drowned in water, I think it’s because quite literally he’s suffocating on structure gel. When the suit was put on it was filled with structure gel, which indicated he most likely suffocated because of the structure gel in the helmet

So glad we finally got to Jin. His design is a real treat

The barometric pressure turned Jin into a soup when he cracked, and the WAU did its job of keeping him alive, or in this case keeping what was left of him Also he could think youre another Jin because he can clearly see, but probably figures out that you arent one and gives chase And him walking around with a weird almost swimming motion to his arms and clunky movement, giving chase, then stopping dead in his tracks when hes been spotted. It looks like hes stuck in some kind of WAU loop of repeating what he did when he died.

Jin was the scariest part of SOMA for me, partly because my first playthrough had an interesting thing happen. I remember seeing a map showing the location of the diving suits, and it showed that there was another one apart from Simon's that was in use. That was scary as I thought there was something else living out there. When I got to Tau I explored slowly, and a few minutes after getting inside, I heard the airlock water flush going again and thought that something had followed me to Tau, and was coming in after me. I hid and then Jin appeared, so I thought this mutated gel gargling monstrosity had followed me there! Really terrifying moment.

the reason for him being so powerful compared to the other wau creations is probably due to him being one of the most preserved human specimines to be manipulated by the wau. having an almost human-like range of motion and senses

I think the reason he hesitates is because he has _some_ fragment of his humanity left that tells him not to harm Simon before being reclaimed by the WaU's control.

By the looks of the diving prep room, I am pretty sure that he got somehow "killed" right after putting it on. It's at least implied by the smears of structure gel coming from the locker where the suit was.

The sound design in this game is immaculate, these wet gurgling noises are straight up nightmare fuel

I've played this game twice through and both times managed to only encounter Jin for like 10 seconds, then just easily skirted by him. I never realized how in-depth and characterizing of a "monster" he was. The hesitation when you look at him is chilling - especially given the (headcanon?) context that he can probably see himself in the reflection of your visor.

It seems to me that the presence of a structural gel in the suit was not the reason for Yoshida's death and his transformation into this, because the WAU would not kill him because of its protocol. Perhaps it assumed that he could die while being outside the station and it would not be able to resurrect him, so it put a little gel in the suit in advance, in case he suffered outside the station and then he could be revived, i think that this is what happened to him (sorry for my bad english)

Him sprinting is pretty frightening ngl, even in this more clinical viewing

Yin was such a great boss fight. I just wish, in retrospect that it was bigger. After all, you can pretty much just stare stun him, go to that door and wait for that long ass time, and still get through before he gets to you. I also think it should be fine to remove the stare option. Or maybe it's something you can use once. It'd be greater if you somehow had to solve a puzzle in one of the rooms in that area, or something. Jin is such a great monster that he deserved more attention. Like the door opening sequence being interrupted at some point and you have to just press a switch elsewhere for it to continue. And, as you probably can tell, I love the monster in Amnesia: the bunker. So, having this one being the roaming or simply recurring monster in the facility, or even outside it, that'd be fantastic. Clearly, a monster like Yin who was one of the smarter ones and humanoid, should be able to climb friggin ladders, seeing as he managed to go both in and out of the facility. Yin was obviously also so great in how he was set up. The subtle information before that there was another suit active. The buildup, and how there's a map beforehand showing the route you need to take. Brilliant stuff.

What I wonder is how Jin can see or hear at all, since his head is just a mass of tentacles with no sensory organs.

Didn't notice those Logs. When Jin went outside, the Logs registered a WAU Subject in the enviroment with him, resulting in his infection, transformation.

This feels like one of the few enemies in the game you could probably actually fight if you tried tbh

The way the tendril that's supposed to break through Simon's visor moves, it makes me think the way Jin kills him specifically is that he smashes through the visor, coils around the base for Simon's 'occular gear' that has his cortex chip on it as well and just literally rips his 'head' off and out of the helmet.

Best enemy introduction and the scariest among all the monsters, in my opinion. I really liked the video, interesting design

When I played Soma I didn't even realize this monster was a threat. I somehow managed to just avoid him after the initial scripted door encounter. I could hear him stumbling around but that was about the only interaction I ever had with him

This vid made me appreciate Frictional’s sound design even more, the horrible gurgling roars he emits are scary enough but I’ve never noticed the subtle mechanical grinding noises his suit makes!

I think what happened to Jin was that at some point food was basically gone, He would go out in the ocean and fish for any type of wild life there was, I believe at some point something went wrong in the airlock, the immense pressure may have cracked his helmet thus drowning him. the wau latched on to him and well he became what he is now

Tau is one of my fave stations and i accualy am kinda working on a mod to repair it, sadly im only good at making the map but not making it work in the game. I also commissiont an artist to make a wallpaper art of taus hallway i hope it will turn out good. Im also really happy to see ppl still make videos about soma to this day

I know the player need a threat... but what is the justification in lore for the wau's creatures to attack humans ? Isn't the wau trying to preserve human life ? Simon is one of its mocking bird after all

If SOMA were to ever get a DBD chapter, I can see Jin be the killer and Simon being the survivor.

This RU-vid channel is fascinating! Also, glad to see you use the Boogeyman from Silent Hill Downpour as your profile picture. Honestly, it's the most underappreciated Boogeyman design and I feel it really gives a more intimidating presence then Pyramid Head (on design, not the scenes).

This subtle but open-to-interpretation depth of this story and characters makes it my favourite horror game

While I'm more for this game as a story and character experience, I am glad that Safe Mode doesn't remove monsters, because there's so much character in them and seeing the effect of the WAU feels like an essential part of the experience. Sure, there is one crew member you meet early on being kept alive by a WAU-formed respirator system, but that's just one of many horrors it can put a person through.

I don't think Jin died outside, actually. Since he accessed the suit and there's a trail of structure gel leading from where the suit was stored, it seems likely to me that it's here, donning the suit, where the WAU transformed him into a monster. If his suit had been ruptured while under water, his entire body would've been turned to soup in an instant and there wouldn't be much left for the WAU to reanimate at that point. There certainly wouldn't have been anything part of Jin's brain to give the monster its sometimes human-like behaviors. Otherwise, Jin must have taken the suit, gone out, died, been reanimated, *gone back to the diving room* and hopped into the suit recepticle again, and then gone back out. That doesn't make a huge amount of sense to me either

I was wondering, could you do a full showcase of the brutal monsters mod? I usually play with it but since I love to play the sneaky way I often don't engage in pursuit with most of the monsters. And the times I did I was cornered.

I always was very disturbed by the unscrewing sound the door makes.

One small detail about the power suit I didn't even think of until just now. The power suit helmet was strong enough to withstand Raleigh Herber's blackbox exploding inside of it with no damage at all, and yet the Wau's tentacles were strong enough to break through it.

Jin Yoshida was real though, and after Soma I stumbled upon another game about deep ocean, Barotrauma, and saw a REALLY BIG similarity to husks and their behavior

Me and my boyfriend were playing Soma together, and we were just annoyed at the monsters, but when Jin appeared…Oh boy, we didn’t say a word during all the gameplay… 😰

I really wish we knew more about him. The dragging marks out of the suit bay imply he died as soon as he got into the suit. But did he? Did he die drowning and the WAU led him back? What was his purpose? Arggh I wish there was like a comic or something that explored more of the world.

I always wondered how Yoshida survived for this long. If I understand correctly food had already run out around the start of the year, and no one had accessed the suits until Yoshida did it. (Except Coetzee, who went to the surface by climbing the space gun to Omega station) We know what Sarah did to survive, maybe Yoshida became that desperate that he tried to survive on structure gel. It can't be a coincidence that one day after the WAU takes over the suit Yoshida accesses it. Awesome video's, by the way. Really detailed and informative. Learning a lot of stuff I didn't know.

Thank you for this, a couple of days ago I was thinking about Soma and I had the weird urge to take a better look at the character models. There weren't any in-depth videos but then yours appeared, really pleasing to watch

In the omicron dive suit room there is a read-out with power suit tracking beacons between TAU and climber station. There are 3 green plus signs and 2 pulsing red triagles on that readout, do you know what the green symbols represent?

2:10 I don't know about him being "drowned" but I will add one point in support of him being killed out in the open water. The airlock goes off when you enter this area. It scared me a bit, expecting something to show up behind me, but as I continued forward and opened the first big bulkhead door in the interior, there was Jin waiting on the other side. EDIT: I see in another comment you stated it was Ross that follows you in. Thinking back on it that makes sense. You can't see him because he glitches your senses. Of *course* it was him following you in. Still freaked me out, though.

I think Yoshida is the hardest monster in the game. He always finds you and stabs you in the back. And also the second scariest monster next to Akers.

The sad truth is, that he most likely committed suicide. Seeing the wau-infested suit, he put it on.

I love how this game has completely fucked with my whole perception of 'What is the human consciousness?' We pilot a robotic suit composed of various human remains, a random black ooze known as structure gel, robotic parts and a copy of a human conscious. This whole time we are to believe Simon is a human being despite what the game tells us, then here arrives Jin Yoshida, the complete polar opposite of Simon. A reanimated figure that once belonged to an actual human being that was recently alive, now possessed by unknown horrors without a single ounce of humanity in sight.

When you get to the bottom of the climber, the climber reads 392.92 atmospheres of pressure at around 4000 meters. This means that this monster and its diving suit can survive 5774 psi continuously. Holy fuck.

it's a shame that some of the enemy encounters in this game were so annoying to play. not sure if it was a bug or something but jin seemed like he could just teleport behind me without warning after i'd lose him around a corner or something. the only way i beat this section was when the game bugged out and he didn't spawn in
