The part I like the most is it was designed to be a modern version of the Ferrari Daytona so it gives people a whole new appreciation for the design when you take that into account. There’s a reason for the shape and vents
Beautiful car. It was the car of my dreams as a 10 year old and I had the Bburago 1/18th scale model of it. My brother's boss bought one new then c. 1998 and oddly I didn't like it as much in real life. That said, it has grown on me again and I'm in awe of yours!
Thank you! I also have the 1/18 Bburago and the GT Spirit versions of my car. Funny thing is I don’t really remember this model growing up, I guess I always payed more attention to the Testarossa, 308 and F40. Over the years I’ve owned the 456 I’ve actually seen it in a new light and appreciate it way more now than back when it was new.
Wow. Forgot about these. I was looking at recent 355 and 550 Maranello. Beautiful cars. Miss those 90's look pop ups the low slung doors and bigger windows. 1st gen Nsx is also my favorite.
It’s funny how many people forgot about the 456 existing. I often have people trying to guess the model because they don’t really see them. Yeah, I think this era was one of the last really cool Ferrari eras before they started to make overly complicated designs and started looking less like easily identifiable Ferraris. A friend of mine had a 1st gen NSX and it’s definitely a sweet car!
I had an old roommate in college who said the same thing. What’s funny is I remember when I was younger I’ve seen pictures of the 456 but I always wanted a Lamborghini at that age so I didn’t really give them too much attention. Now I have a better appreciation for the 456, especially when I realized it was a modern Ferrari Daytona as far as design went.
Well at the time when I stumbled upon this 456 I really didn’t see others for sale. This was back in 2017 and there weren’t as many for sale as compared to now. My other options in that price range were the 308 and Mondial and those would require engine out services so it could very easily get really expensive really quickly. I also liked the idea of having a V12 Ferrari more than a V8 Ferrari. I originally preferred a manual but I heard a rumor that the auto trans used in the 456 GTA was a GM trans so if something happened with the trans, there was a chance I could get parts way cheaper. Also manual Ferraris always seem to have a reputation of costing $10,000 or more to have a clutch replaced so I figured for a first time Ferrari owner it would be less expensive to own the GTA over the GT. The auto trans is mounted below the trunk floor and there’s a panel you can unbolt to get access to the top of the transmission so it’s actually really convenient for someone who wants to try to do as many repairs as possible by themselves. Another reason was the price was a pretty good one at the time and the guy I bought it from was 76 years old and his girlfriend was 86 and they both drove their cars so they were all automatics. The previous owner also hinted that this particular 456 was owned by tennis pro Andre Agassi but I have yet to verify it so if that is true it would have a pretty cool history.
So I’ve noticed since 2017 when I bought my 456 the prices have gone up by at least $20,000 on average. I also noticed that there are very few Ferraris that are selling for under $50,000, mostly those are the Mondial and the 456. I know the Mondial has always been looked down on by many people but the 456 was the most expensive Ferrari at the time, it has a V12 and was the fastest 4 passenger car in the world back then and it was designed to be a modern Daytona so I think it won’t be too many years from now that we will see 456’s creeping into the 6 digit range. Under appreciated Ferraris tend to be worth very little at some point in time and then they suddenly skyrocket in value when that model is remembered by people who were young at the time when it came out.
@@Spenny909 if you can find another one in the color combo you like, I’d definitely think about buying one soon. I really believe the times of finding 456’s in that price range will soon be coming to an end
@Itsnevo I just bought an FF. The build quality of these cars worries me a little. It would be hard work to have more than one Italian car. That is where vids like yours are useful.
@@Spenny909 I totally understand that. I have a friend in London who owns around 8 Ferrari’s right now and he also documents the work he does on his cars for RU-vid and I’m really glad because he has done videos that no one else has made. The 456 is actually pretty simply made and I’ve been able to do most of the work so far by myself. I’ve left some more important things like replacing timing belts to the experts just so I don’t cause myself a huge repair bill. The benefit to making these videos is it does help people who have never tried working on their own cars realize some things are very easy to do and can save them lots of money when they do some repairs themselves. It’s funny how many people ask me how much money I’ve spent with repairs and maintenance and when they hear the number they are shocked because it’s a small fraction of what they expected. Now of course my car was decently taken care of so I may be more lucky.
I absolutely love these 456 GTA's because of their looks and rarity. BUT... it has to be said that Ferrari quality is a complete joke. This car was a quarter of a million dollars when new, and there are so many issues wrong with this example it's not even funny. For starters...how often do you think those headlight doors were opened and closed over the life of this car???? Maybe 100??? Maybe 250??? And the motors have to rebuilt because they are worn out??? Are you freaking kidding me?? There's ZERO excuse for that. None. And then windows that won't align properly??? Really??? I 1962 Ford Falcon has better door sealing qualities than this Ferrari with aluminum pins in the scissor mechanicisms that can't take normal wear of the windows going up and down over a brief amount of tiime??? It's not like this car was a daily driver or anything. You can keep this thing.
I agree, there is a lot of truth to the statement that Ferrari builds motors and you get a car with it. The focus for Ferrari was always the motor, the design was always done by companies like Pininfarina. The craftsmanship of the rest of the car wasn’t really as big of a priority for them. Previous to me owning this car, it was always kept in the Southern California area so it was driven year round and it was a corporate owned car for the first 44,000 miles so it was daily driven quite a bit. From what I’ve heard, the headlight motors get dirty and then start to fail but they can be disassembled, cleaned out, regreased and will often work again so that’s the route I’m going to go. Currently it has almost 73,000 miles on it so it’s been used more than many Ferraris
Thank you! Well those are actually the factory wheels that came on the car. They are 17” wheels which in 1998 were actually considered to be larger wheels but compared to cars of today they do appear to be quite small.
The 1995 Porsche 928 GT was the real competitor for this car. Of course, that was the last year it was produced, and it had only 345 hp. But it still kicked ass, and was definitely cooler looking.
It’s a shame that the 928 was also one of those under appreciated cars. They were really cool cars! I looked at a few 928’s when I was car shopping before I bought my 456 and it seemed like it was really hard to find one in good condition at the time. I also heard some horror stories about the V8’s that the 928 had available and it kinda scared me a little.
@@somnamnaa if you are asking if the Ferrari is the GTS, then no it is the GTA. They had a GT and a GTA. The GT was the manual version and the GatA was the automatic version
It’s alright, for someone like me who has never owned a Ferrari before this model it’s actually kinda the best for me because it the one that would most likely cost less to maintain. Getting parts for a GM trans I’m sure is less expensive than a bespoke Ferrari transmission. Also this model is more of a GT car anyways so it’s never going to be tracked so I don’t mind as much having an automatic It would have been nice if it had more gears but I don’t drive it that much to have it bother me
