The guy seems really cool and down to earth. The sad part comes when he one day passes away and his family has to deal with it. Hope he leaves his family some good instructions on what to do.
"Collections" like this illustrates the glut of inventory out there hidden from sight most of the time. Obviously the dude is very proud of every fiber of paper of his "collection" and its clearly a source of joy. I understand perfectly.
Mr. Goose: while I cannot speak to the individual in the video, I take your point. The insidious nature of addiction is that we think it can’t happen to us. Addiction, hoarding and greed are more prevalent in the community than many like to talk about. I’m glad you did.
That's why there is Big difference between collectors and investors in comics.This man probably feels a lot of pride knowing and seeing what he has accomplished of the years doing this.There are too many flippers out there today.I give this man credit...a true collector.
I used to go to my LCS every week and get 10-20 new books. Now I just buy omnis/tpbs. Heck, I’m even thinking of selling my omnis after reading them but we’ll see…lol
If that guy had one of the big 3 or 5 books from the golden age or silver age he'd be able to pay for the whole collection... I'm addicted to the character of Lobo, I'm trying to collect his entire appearence history, I want all toys, posters, and statues too. I can't say I'm addicted to comics though. I pick up and put down the hobby periodically and I am willing to part with stuff I know I won't ever read again or care about.
My problem at the moment is I'm trying to buy a high grade raw copy of Spectacular Spider-Man #1 to submit to CGC. Dishonest sellers make online buying of comics more difficult than it already is. I keep getting sub-par copies of this issue. None of them are the grade I'm looking for. I think I have like 4 or 5 copies of the same comic at this point. I would also like to minimize my collection, but I don't have the selling know-how.
If you’re collecting numbers just save up for a graded one. If sellers aren’t posting accurate pictures, there’s nothing you can do unless you want to buy 15 more copies you don’t want.
The only way this comic game is going to survive is if the kids now start getting into it. And the way Disney has been going about it the future of comics looks a bit scarce.
One million books is pretty much absurd. Anything over 10K books in a PC is pushing the same limit. Understood a full run of ASM(700+) is a tenth of that and a good run of X-Men (up to 500), and Fantastic Four (500), Batman and Detective (1k ), Superman (1k) (around 4k books total). There should be a some limit because a million comics is 1/7 the entire printed run of XMen #1 worldwide... crazy when you think about the numbers.
But the man is happy, harms no one, his family will be rich and maybe his motives are deep and we are not able to see them. A bit critical on your part, Sticky, no pun intended😊
What Shelton showed was the back stock for his business, not his PC. He’s likely been buying collections for over 30 years. I’m sure his PC is incredible and a fraction of this size. I could see you saying addiction if he wasn’t a successful business owner with this many books, but he is the main guy in Charlotte and one of the biggest on the east coast.
You might be right, but around the 1:35 mark, I think the announcer calls it his comic book collection, which leads me to believe it is separate from his shop inventory. There are other statements in the video which suggest it is his PC, and not shop inventory?
In my mind it only becomes an addiction when you’re spending money you can’t afford to spend, and then having to go without. Case in point when you can’t afford to feed your family or pay your heating bills because you’ve spent all your money on comics, you need to step back and think twice.
I follow a popular and respected older comic book you tuber… he’s getting up there in age and his collection has gotten to the point where he is losing shortboxes in his own house and has absolutely no idea where to start looking for books…. His books are incredible but you can tell by how he talks he wishes he would have done it differently and not gotten so carried away with collecting every book… low grade isn’t always better than no grade
I would want 1 million mostly worthless comics about as much as I would want 1 million rolls of toilet paper. My own collection over the decades has gone from many long boxes of crap to a few dozen rare valuable slabs which I display.
