The thing with FTUS is that it will also cost quite a bit just for the storage to put it all on. Then there is the issue of how long it would take to audition that many samples.

Pianobook is absolutely great, I've been using it for a while now and even made some instruments you can find on there. Pro tip with decent sampler: you can in fact extend the range as much as you like, because you can edit the .dspreset file (which is in fact just a text file). Long story short, all you have to do is to change the lokey/hikey value of the bottom/top regions to whatever note you like

Pianobook is so very, very good. I'm very much a Spitfire fan, in part because my work involves many of the company's libraries. But it's things like LABs and Pianobook that sets Christian, Paul and the rest of the crew apart. Good people, good music. Nice video, as usual, Cameron.

Sound design is always worth your time, especially if you hit a creative block or need a bit of a break and something different to do before going back to composing and mixing with a refreshed mind. You don't have to start from scratch if you don't want to, starting from zero can be more challenging for some people, and you always have the option to start with ready-made presets

So for funsies, I picked one of the instruments with about a dozen or so samples in it and duplicated it. In the dupe copy, I then copypasted the same number of samples from elsewhere that I had sitting around collecting electrons on my hard drive for god-knows-how-many-years, and then changed the names of the samples I found to the samples named in the decentSampler sample set, and the deleted the original samples, so I now had my new samples with the old names. Then I changed the name of the instrument to Warwick Chaos Box. It worked. Took me all of , I dunno, 10 minutes? Tops? And holy cow what a crazy mess of noise. Happy Happy Joy Joy. This thing is super hackable. This gave me the work the original programmer devised for their sample set and gave away for free (velocity changing samples, keymapping etc.) only now it's on samples of my choosing. Very. Freaking. Cool. This hack method is easier and more powerful than Simpler.
@unoriginalk2665
@unoriginalk2665 2 года назад
wait what
@Novalarke
@Novalarke 2 года назад
@@unoriginalk2665 Hi! TLDR: duplicate a DecentSampler preset folder. Rename it to what you want. Rename the .dspreset file to the same. Make Sample(s) you want. Rename the .wav files to what the .dspreset file is expecting. Replace the old .wav files with the ones you have made. Done. Some better 'splainin' here: The way this sampler works is like this: The sampler (DecentSampler.dll) accesses an XML file. XML is a type of plain text file that is mostly readable by humans. It has a syntax not very different from HTML. This XML file is just a list of "things" and "values" that tell the Sampler what to do, such as what is the range of a sample on the keyboard (such as, say, C3 to D5 or whatever). Another thing this sampler can do is stack samples by velocity, so this way a sample might be of a gentle strike below say, 64 in velocity, and a hard strike above 63, etc. Each velocity layer has a name, you get the picture. *For the sake of simplicity, I won't get into layers here.* For the sake of simplicity, we'll look at one of the sets that only has one sample in it: Ash's Singing Radiator. The name of the wav file used in Ash's Singing Radiator is "LS_50404_bipA#5.wav". To find it go to where ever it is you installed the resources for DecentSampler. (For me, I saved them to a different huge internal drive, "Internal 2TB", so as to not clutter my SSD. For me, the path to LS_50404_bipA#5.wav is: D:\AUDIO FILES\Decent Sampler Files\Ash's Singing Radiator (DS)\Samples\LS_50404_bipA#5.wav) And the first thing you do is duplicate Ash's Singing Radiator folder. Name it something you want, say, Khalliope's NoiseBox. Now: Inside the Khalliope's NoiseBox folder, rename the XML file. It will have the suffix ".dspreset". So, the XML file will now have the name "Khalliope's NoiseBox.dspreset". So now, all you have to do is take a .wav file of whatever noise that flips your crank and makes you happy, then name it "LS_50404_bipA#5.wav" and *REPLACE* the old LS_50404_bipA#5.wav file in your Khalliope's NoiseBox / Samples folder with this new one. *BANG. That's It. You're done.* You now have a DecentSampler preset called "Khalliope's NoiseBox" available to you in DecentSampler next time you open your DAW. Easy Peasey. You can reverse engineer other samplers like this - eventually you learn what is in the XML file and what it means. It's really just a list, a kind of look-up table so DecentSampler knows where to find the samples and what to do with them. I expect DecentSampler and the rest to fade when Reaper rebuilds Samplematic5000 into something more useful and 64bit. But until Reaper comes up with a more intuitive, powerful and easier to use Sample player (like, *cough* Ableton's Simpler...) hacking DecentSampler files is a fairly easy thing to do.

The finished clip is beautiful and the choice of sounds is really tasteful! There's only one think I feel is missing -- and I feel like it's missing from a lot of ambient/soundscape is some sense of what I'll call a "heartbeat" for lack of a better term. But otherwise, yeah: WOW! is the word. Really, really nice. And also, a great discussion of Pianobook and Decent Sampler. I've been following and using both for some time now -- I've even bought some samples! That Claustrophobic Piano is reminiscent of the piano used in the intro to The Who's 'Love Reign O'er Me', and the Frozen Glock tickles a musical memory, too, of an old recording of Tchaikovsky's 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' from an old Firestone Christmas album my parents had when I was a kid. Again, very nice choices! Thanks for sharing your work! It's inspiring me to get my butt in gear and start working on some new music! Cheers!

I downloaded several things from pianobook and found many of them were unusable due to some production mistake in the user created content. Things like pops and clips. Don't get me wrong, there are some nice sounds and particularly some good stuff for experimental type enthusiasts where the goal is to widen the sonic style. But if you are looking for production sounds, these libraries have issues like: tuning, hiss and quality, too broadly sampled: audible pitch distortion as samples are stretched to fill in gaps, etc. Tuning problems in some notes while others can be great, and a lack of standard free way to load them means you need to keep a small library of plugins to manage loading all the various interfaces. It ended up being a lot of trouble and then I went back to my vst painos because they sound better. Hard to admit it but its alot of effort to get each file loaded, learn the different interface for each app and then to occasionally find glitches in the interface and in the sound just kind of left me a little disappointed for how cool it appears to be. The idea is nice, but its free. A high quality piano sound demands a level of attention that people get paid for.

I absolutely love Piano Book. It really makes me want to explore sampling instruments myself - just a unique world of a mix of acoustic and impossible sounds. Plus, I absolutely LOVE Claustrophobic piano for the intimate soft piano sound - it kinda pushes LABS Soft Piano out of the lime light for free intimate piano for me.

I like your “collaborative community” message. I was looking for a comparison of Decent sampler versus Logic ESX24 and Kontakt (which I have) but really I’m just being lazy, ‘cause I could just download and try Decent sampler. At the 50,000 ft level, I wonder why each DAW and vendor has their own sampler and why? In the long run, wouldn’t it just make sense if we all used the same sampler? I understand the business motive. NI sells Kontakt instruments and has 300 partners and I believe they’re the #1 most popular sampler instrument format. That’s a revenue stream they’ll want to protect, right? But the Kontakt player is free, just like Decent sampler is free. Where are we headed?
@snesmocha
@snesmocha 2 года назад
Closed source as hell and is insanely hard to work with kontakt due to its strange proprietary and encrypted formats Plus as you said profits, and player is used to entice you to the rest of the ni library

Developers are seeing a completely different game to what we, the customers are. with a propietary sampler of their own, they do not have to shell any cash to another company. i mean, for example with NI, it costs 13 grand to have like 1500 licenses, 300 free runs and have your shit encoded to their format. imagine what happens when you get a big breakthrough as a developer and your shit gets like five to seven figure yearly downloads? now, imagine the same scenario if they release their own sampler?
@JeffyG
@JeffyG 2 года назад
@@intergalacticspacecanoe4659 developers always get screwed. I worked in the enterprise software business for 27 years. So developers strike gold, but it’s rare. Private equity have billions to invest and few places to put it. They see musicians/producers with home studios as an opportunity to capitalize and make money - the opposite of what motivated developers to create the next VST or plugin.

only just discovered your channel - and im glad i did! This composition that you've done in this video is out of this world. I immediately see myself sitting on my xbox on a loading screen of a game. This is incredible. I produce drum and bass myself, so what you're doing here makes DnB look like childsplay 😂😂😂. I need to get myself this plugin though, you've done a fantastic job explaining how it works and what it has to offer, so i'm incredibly grateful. Keep doing what you're doing!

I like your video. Most of my music I produce with free vsts. Most of my sample packs are purchased, but I have learned to record sounds all around me then add effects from the DAW. I also use the instruments that my DAW supplies as well. I will try your recommendations. I have 47 free synthesizers. Mostly all are atmospheric sounds which I love. I love producing cinematic music as well. I got my inspiration from horror movies. By adding compression these productions sound as huge as on the big screens. Thank you for your informative video. Enjoy your day.

Wow, Cameron! Your selection of Sounds are right up your compositional alley and beautiful! Unfortunately, I can't write any ambient stuff right now. I lost my Mom last month and music that uses sounds like these puts me in a place I don't want to be in right now. The F-minor you played with the Artic Pad was more than enough. For me to compose a track with just that... I have composed ambient stuff in the past, that I'll share with you later. Of course I'll get this but you will not deter me from getting the Project Sam libraries I've been lusting and drooling over for the last couple of months. Also, have you had any experience with SonoKinetic Libraries like Noir?

Yep, been using Pianobook/Decent Sampler for a while now. The Funky Fingers bass instrument is great; I've used it on a LOT of recent music. Cassette Drums and Lorenzo's Drum Kit are very cool. I have to check out more of the ambient synths you've used here. Oh, I also recommend the Church Steinway for a great "basic" grand piano.

You have no idea how awesome this is. To me i was buying hardware keyboards over the years for pads and chorus stuff for ambient eerie emotional stuff. Ive recently picked up guitar but i have to get this old cheap keyboard hooked up via the cheap midi wire. Im still new to daw yet. Ill be in heaven to freely be able to write music and background tracks to solo over. Awesome.
