Great fun and just what I needed on a gloomy weather day! I like the challenge of doing a high key painting to stretch my color muscles. I’m eager to try this. Thank you and Bless you Susan!
Ahhhhh…. That’s a tough decision. Often I try to walk away in the middle of a painting… Or what feels like the middle… So as not to overwork it. Often when we take a break we come back with fresh eyes and we don’t laboriously paint and overwork things.

😱😍 I used to run my toothpick/small brushes with children's water colour 😬😌 on useless business cards erratically to spend my idle times. But what I found here have just blown my mind😍 You're awesome with your simplicity & creativity 👌👍
Love colorist and high key. Amazing. See things differently now as far as shadows, depth, distance , where sun is coming from. Like a better pair of glasses. Paint what you see not what you think. Is there a need to have white in pastel? Also as far as NU pastels is that a kind or a brand? Could only find Prisma Color. Should have tomorrow 😁. Is amazing how artists doing tutorials acknowledge one another, Happy feeling with that. When using members photos, we should acknowledge photo, who took and where? Thank you

I like that ;) And yes, there is a need for white values in pastel although I usually don't use pure white, but a white version of another color... like a super pale blue or yellow. And NuPastles are made by Prismacolor. They are very handy and are good for making finer lines. When using someone's photo we should always give them credit, and the other info you mentioned would be nice if it's available. Happy Painting!!
I loved watching this, it was very soothing, but it would have been nicer if you explained a bit more what is the colorist approach, how do you do it... that sort of thing
Carla Ferraccini Thanks so much for that useful feedback. I think I explained more about what the colorist approach was and not enough about how to do it. I will be uploading a video soon of a dog portrait where I really enhance the color and I plan to share my methods and techniques for my color choices. Perhaps that will help.

Some of my first pastels were Rembrandts. They are more of a medium hardness and work for various techniques. The 60 half stick set has some pretty nice colors for colorist painting. I typically try to buy "half sticks" when I can because you get more bang for your buck. Absolutely gorgeous! When I grow up I want to paint just like you (I'm 60, it's taken me awhile)!! I have a question... I was gifted a set of Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay India Ink with 12 different colors. Can I use that as an underpainting?
Gaynelle Beasley-West wonderful! And I’m right behind you friend… I’ll be 55 in June. Your set of inks should work just fine. I love using inks because they don’t fill up the tooth of the pastel paper and the color is typically so vibrant and perfect for an under painting. Just play and have fun! Keep learning and the joy is in the journey.
Beautiful! I'm a beginner and you inspire me so much. I have a question if you don't mind and this might sound stupid but I'm really just a noob. How do you get the values right, especially the middle values? When I get to the lighter side of things, sometimes they all look the same to me. Thank you!
That is such a great question. It can be tricky, especially with middle values. A neat trick is to take a picture of your pastels (or whatever medium you are using), then convert the pic to black and white. Often this is an easier way to see value. I'm actually about to upload a video talking more about value so I'll hopefully address your question more thoroughly. So glad you are enjoying my channel! :)
Another great achievement sister. I'm looking forward to the high key illustration. "In the beginning there was darkness, and then there was light..." But at what percentage? I was always confused about the numbers in the beginning. Then i realized, light can be 100%, (white paper.) Once the 'attributes' of my composition has been established; i began to find the equator, where light decrease and darkness increases; establishing the darkest darks; keeping in mind the areas of reflected light, if they are warm or cool reflections. This gives me the ability to see the scale, (contrast) working from darkness to the light. If im reading you properly, and not meaning to give it away lol you'll do high key, then low key and then bringing it all together... Yes - No?
Y'know, I checked out artist, Jane Schmidt on RU-vid... Wasn't impressed with her color choices. Is there another link where I can find a work of hers similar to the one you included in your video?
cat yeah ... I found her work from a search on Google for colorist style artwork. When I go to images many of her beautiful pieces showed up. Perhaps you can check it out that way.
